I grew up in LA playing with these guys, long before youtube was even a thing, before twitch even, it's a beautiful thing to see the Great Hikaru come through and play with the same guys who showed me the ropes. The Great Carlini a true chess hero and mastermind, someone who elevates the game to a new level, you see this guy checking out the chess problem of the day in the local paper wearing a safari hat, comes over starts running his mouth but not in a mean way in a friendly way, in a good sportsmanship way, bringing the game of chess to life beautifully and elegantly, to see Hikaru come and play with these guys it's like a dream come true for the chess world, the one people might not know about, the street chess world where players don't play for anything but the love of the game. This was a true blessing, thank you Hikaru for doing this

I was first hooked for the Coffee Chess channel via some random FB video where some bald guy was really mean to other player. We never behaved like that in our games. And that is how I discovered Boston Mike and remembered the old times when he was NICE :D Brutal duel of Brooklyn Dave and Golani Salami sealed my subscription. I am going to enjoy your channel too. Loving the detail you are picking up in these reactions. It is a lot! And is only the selected few elements that could resonably be included from the books. Book fans forget how much time we had to assimulate the complexity, as we waited 2 years between books. This season's main job is to set the context for story arcs that take until the Last Battle to resolve. i.e. Season 8/9, if we get that far. The complexity weaves story arc's, character developments, and epic battles into an open conflict of the forces of the Light and Shadow. The Last Battle is coming!

One thing I have noticed about Hikaru is that he's very generous when his opponent makes a mistake. I imagine most other players wouldn't have let someone take back that rook move. Also, this reminds me of the time Hikaru could have been a jerk in a professional game when his opponent accidentally hit the button on the clock before promoting their pawn to a queen. Hikaru could have taken the win, but he realized it was a mistake and wanted to give his opponent a fighting chance.

I love the change of pace depending on the player Hikaru plays against. The first video I saw was against that funny trash talker in Detroit, and how he played fast and Hikaru played just as fast, and when he played Mike he played the same speed as him, and was able to slow down even more for Duck, so it was a well thought out game. Great ability to shift gears.

@@skunkboy72 Black's King can only move to D8 or E7 (Although E7 is Mate in 2 - Queen to F6, Bishop to H5). Queen shifts over to F6 for another check. If the King returns to E8, Bishop H5 is Mate. If Black tries to block the Queen with Bishop E7, Queen takes Rook with Check. Queen then takes Bishop on F8 (it can't move out of the way or the King will be revealed). If the King returns to E8 to attempt to protect the Bishop, Bishop to H5 forces the King away. If King to D8, Queen takes Bishop with Check and the only legal move is Bishop to E8, and Queen takes for Checkmate (Queen is protected by Bishop on H5). If King to E7, trying to continue protecting the Bishop, Queen to F6 is Mate (Queen protected by the pawn). Black's King would have to retreat to the opposite side of the board, forcing Black to lose a Rook and Bishop. Black's Pawns are in no position to push and he'd be left with a Queen and light squared Bishop. That Bishop will be forever trapped in the top left quadrant if White plants their Bishop on H5. Even if Black's remaining Bishop were to escape, all of White's pawns are on dark squares and can only be attacked by the Queen. Black's pawns, however, are much less defensible, with a Rook and Bishop pair able to attack and defend, allowing White to march the pass pawn on the G file to an easy promotion. The only way for Black to win here is if White blunders every piece. I'm at around 750-800 rating, so I'd love if someone could point out anything in that position I missed.
