Hi Dan. This repair shows how much reserch you have to do, even just to get the body off! I recently bought a brand new Bachmann 08 in orange Railfreight livery from Kernow (for £99: bargain!). Comapring it to my decades old Triang version it demonstrated just how much the hobby has moved on: it was like comparing apples to bananas! Keep up the good work, sir. St Catherine & the 2 9Fs you repaired for me are still going strong.

A tip for anyone going to a train show to buy a loco or more, take a 9 volt battery with you. A good seller will let you test the loco. If he/she refuses then walk away. Martin. (Thailand)

Well said. Any good trader selling locos will have a 9v battery and will do the test himself. As you state, if he complains, just walk away.

Dan you only need to remove the Nem pocket under the cab then remove the small screw directly underneath this nem pocket. Then gently pull on the chssis to release it. I have several of these and this is a simple way to remove the chassis. Have a look at the John Mellor channel, his video dated 15th November 2013 explains all. Hope this info is of help.

Hi Dan, that was a great repair, I do feel for Pete though, you don’t expect that amount of damage from a loco which was sold as a runner, but like you said, there is no way that would have run in that state so shame on the seller for selling it as a ‘runner’. I guess the only way to check a loco at a show if the seller has no way of checking to see if it does run, is to take a 9V battery to just to check it out. Anyway, alls well that ends well and a cracking job done. I’ve seen it running on Pete’s layout and it runs great so well done mate ! 👍🏻. Cheers. ………..Graham

Good advice: The "9v test" is one I've used many times, after being caught out with this sort of issue. It's not possible when buying online, which is why I never buy anything via ebay etc unless there is a statement that it does run. At least you can then send it back if it doesn't!

I'm not surprised about the way this fella got ripped off, a friend of mine bought a diesel loco from a show and trusted the seller who said it was a runner when he got it home and tried it on the track it was a non runner this from a dealer we both knew my friend didn't get his contract number but it goes to show always see any item running wether new or second hand, never trust anyone that's the motto, at least with that site that starts with an e you've got some one in your corner, good job he had you get it running as it looked complicated to me, anyway great video again Dan Ktf J

Convenient you upload this as I just got a Bachmann gronk for my birthday today and I wasn't sure how to open it. My friend was a bit unlucky at MK too, he bought a early bachmann J72, promised it ran well and we found out all the axles are split so it lumps along. He got some really nice coaches and found all the plastic bearings were all worn to the point the wheels scraped at the coach frame.

We've all done it and been caught out. Caveat emptor. Oddly, you can have more protection when buying off ebay. If something you buy isn't as per the description, then you can return it for a full refund. I ask whether items run well prior to buying them. If I get no response, then I don't buy it.

It must have been a reputable seller at MK. Very surprising that this was in such poor condition.
