I completely agree. In my country, we learn English alongside our mother tongue because it's one of our official languages. And as a kid, I was able to learn faster than my peers and I avoided developing an accent because I watched a lot of English shows, movies, and cartoons. Being able to actually hear the language spoken by native speakers helped me learn it myself while also learning how to speak it naturally instead of like a textbook version.

Initial C: Connor was just your average teen, when one day his friend invited him to play chess in his club and wiped the floor with everyone with his skills. he was using advanced techniques and maneuvers that he himself doesn't even know the names of. unbeknownst to him, his father was a former "street grand-master" and has been teaching him chess through video games since he was a child. the discovery of his talents couldn't have come at a better time, since the inter high is coming up and the school's chess team is average at best and is on the verge of being disbanded, even though his school was a former national champion, but Connor isn't really interested in playing competitively because he thinks chess is boring and takes too long to finish, he just wanted to play more pokemon. can his friend convince him to join the chess team and restore the school to it's former glory?

Why not watch anime to learn Japanese if that is what you like doing anyways? I wouldn't necessarily recommend using only anime, but using that as a major source of listening immersion does not harm your progress in Japanese in any significant way (AT ALL). I do think it is good to use a varied range of listening and reading but then again, anime has tons of genres with different characters who speak in many different ways, so it should be enough to watch pretty much only anime until you get fluent. . . . And yes, I am speaking from experience.

Shit. I might just fuck around and write this story down like a reddit writing prompt. EDIT: As they kept talking about Connor's stint as a local chess prodigy, both Gan and Joey touched up on so many tropes most sport/competition anime/manga have. The explanation of moves, some history on certain moves and methods, concepts that get shown visually, the rival/bully story arc, the protagonist losing confidence/interest, etc etc. This shit writes itself at this point!

To the bit about Joey’s mom, I was straight up hired once to babysit for a child who was half Japanese half White, and pretend I spoke no Japanese. The parents wanted her to be able to speak both English and Japanese, but because we were in Japan and the parents (particularly the dad) would often respond to her when she was using Japanese, she would never practice English. So basically they hired me to both give them some free time and also force her to use English. So I get where his mom is coming from. 😂

I need to prepare myself and be in the right mindset I feel to fully appreciate and enjoy the show, otherwise I feel it's a disservice to myself and the creators. And YES Connor, attack on titan was so above everything else it transcended that, even after season 1 every episode was too good to miss. Same with the manga, every time it comes out I NEED to see what happens, then see what twitter and reddit see about it. I've got that issue in general, and it's been screwing with my life while nobody in my friend group has the same issue. So for a while I thought I was some kind of freak. Talked with my psychiatrist lately, turns out it happens when you have both ADHD and Depression. I'm chasing the perfect dopamine high from watching things, and those two issues make it such a bitch and a half to get that to happen. Sandbox games, clip compilations and random shit on KZbin is so much more approachable and gives me that immediate feedback, whereas I know if I want to finally get back to reading Berserk, everything needs to be right. The problem is, I'm pretty much never in a good headspace. Kinda puts a damper on my ability to experience things I might enjoy. I have had Cowboy Bebop on DVD for years, and I have never fucking seen it. I've heard Serial Experiments Lain is amazing, can't find the right time to sit down and view it. Ergo Proxy looks interesting, no fucking idea when I'll see it. There's so many things like that, whether it's manga, anime, video games, even listening to new albums from artists I know I enjoy. I have never listened to any King Crimson album other than Court of the Crimson King, because when I want to listen to them, I'm going to go back to that album. Honestly it's driving me nuts. I comfort zone so hard that it's not even comfortable, it's just vaguely OK.

@@Nippontradamus Duolingo is okay at teaching you the syllabaries (hiragana, katakana), words, and some phrases, but it doesn't go over sentence structure or articles like "the" so in essence it doesn't really teach you the language. A word of caution though, for Japanese, some of the words they teach you isn't 100% accurate. For example, the app will teach you "ocha = tea", when "ocha" more specifically means "green tea"; or "chiketto = ticket", which is true in general but for train ticket you need to use the word "kippu". This episode be like: "Ok first we start with how complex Monogatari is, then we spice it up with some dark-depression stuff, and than we end it with some amazing chess tournament arc adaptation"

1:45:05 "Little girls competing in Mahjong tournament" that's Saki and I like that show. I would say it is the equivalent of Kuroko's basketball, so don't expect some logical power moves lol.

I was also thinking that Saki was the show he was taking about. I enjoyed watching that show too though it is more like “The Prince of Tennis” where the special effects and scenes of each character’s power move becomes the main focus rather than showing a realistic representation of Mahjong.
