I have lived in the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and a month in Norway so I do know a bit about the difference of breads. Of countries I have yet to visit in Europe it's Finland and multiple countries in the Balkans. While they where recently in UK I just think they should redo this when they visit Europe again and then preferably in Germany or France as they have the best breads in my opinion.

It was appalling, and I was totally with Connor. @@ryana5435 One definition I found very quickly looking elsewhere: "A foodstuff made by baking dough made from cereals(grains)." If we want to look back to where the word comes from, the origin word is believed to simply mean "Piece of food" with the words in between that origin word and our modern word simultaneously meaning bread, crumb, or just food depending on the context. Regardless of what definition you look at pastries are bread, with the distinction being that the term pastry comes from a french origin while bread comes from a germanic origin. I could also go into some reasons most of the things they are referring to as pastries in the video do not qualify as pastries as well if you would like.

As someone from Switzerland watching this is painful. Most of the things we see here aren't bread but rather some form of bastardized pastry (no Joey, all that sweet shit isn't bread, Connor is right) and what bread there is does not look all that great. We mostly see breads made from all-purpose (or bread) type wheat flour, only one whole flour bread (as far as I could tell) and no breads from other types of grain like rye, spelt, oats, barley... Also no potato bread or corn flour bread and even among the wheat breads we're missing traditional flatbread/pita, swiss Butterzopf (or tresse au beurre) and sourdough bread. And those are mostly just the german style breads. We haven't even started on all the italian and french breads there are. I propose that this tier list is to be redone at a later date in Europe and then with actual bread, not 60-70% pastry.

@@InfernoVipa I've copypasted this comment like 3 times, and I'm gonna keep doing it, but I feel this is definitely an asian thing, not just Japa, because aside from the label of pastry vs bread (which let's be real, a croissant is definitely a pastry by any definition), things like sweet bread are considered, by many asian countries, bread. A lot of things people hate about Japan, like sweet bread and super bitter coffee, is extremely commonplace and even loved in a lot of asia, and something I experienced in Hong Kong, Thailand, and even my hometown of Vietnam. In Vietnam, and frankly much of SEA, we consider many sweet breads bread, and the only non-sweet form of bread I can really think of off the top of my head is the ones used in banh mi, which would explain why the SEA staff picked these as bread. Europe on the other hand is influenced by, surprise, places in Europe. Germany, France, and Italy all work off each other, creating bread more suited to the taste of... well, Europeans. Asia is influenced by other asian cultures, who see bread more as a quick snack or treat rather than something meant to go with a meal I grew up in Asia, so I'm personally very partial to sweet breads, I literally didn't enjoy non-sweet bread until like, last year, and even now I still prefer pastries to bread, so it's not really a bad thing or a thing that most Japanese really care to change, it's simply a difference in palette. The microwave though was an atrocity. Where's the air fryer sponsorship when we need it?

As a frenchmen, the french "breads" are very much not french breads aside from the baguette and the Pain aux traditionel. These are japanese romanticization of french pastries and attempting to make them into bread. In france you don't eat cheese stuffed bread, thats more of a danish or pastry. French breads, even when flavored will be lightly flavored with salt, herbs, nuts and garlic. On a handful of occasions will we use cheese and in those circumstances itll be in like a brie bread or a fougasse. And even then the fougasse you found in japan is more of a flatbread than a real fougasse. French breads do not contain cream cheese, or mascarpone, thats not a thing even with the sweet breads, which we very rarely make because bread is mainly savory in france. If we want sweet we get a pastry or a patisserie.
@SDood90

That fougasse was really sad to look at
@HailKosm
@HailKosm Жыл бұрын
@@SDood90 yeah it was literally just a flatbread. I don't even think it had the shape of a fougasse. Idk, Japan has this really weird romanticism about France and especially french sweets. But like 90% of Japanese french bread are just brioches with stuffing in it. Which isn't really french, because we don't really do stuffed brioches unless it's like a Tarte st Tropez. Which is really more of a cake than bread.

I hate to agree with Conner but I have to, there were 3 breads the rest are pastries and no matter how much Joey wants them to be, pastries are not bread, also all the cheese breads, not great. So I am inclined to say that this was a pastry tier list not a bread tier list. Edit: a year later and I changed my mind, there are 4 breads, I didn't really look at it well but technically the maple french bread on watching on a larger screen and stopping to actually visually inspect the bread is actually just a like big standard french bread with maple syrup drizzled on it, so it is bread, it's also a huge waste of maple syrup.
