@@RidinDad Issues; ah well; I'd say it isn't very user friendly. The fit is very tight and so it is hard to get a good grip on it to remove it. The surface being so smooth doesn't make it any easier. Then the fitting on top of it for the hose also kind of gets in the way whenever you want to get to your side cover. It does it's job but the tranny top cover is just a much cleaner solution for about the same money (close enough anyway). If someone asked me today which should they get I would 100% tell them to get the Trask top cover.

I have oil always building up on my air filter. So now it’s been well tested out, do you think it’s worth getting ?? Have you noticed it makes a difference to anything at all?? And if so what has changed ? Is there anything about it that annoys you ? Eg how often do you have to clean that filter on the end of it?? Does that filter drop oil etc? Sorry for the questions, I’m just trying to decide whether it’s worth doing ? Or whether I should not bother

No problem at all man! I never had to clean the filter. Never had oil make its way all the way up to it. I even put a catch can to double check. Thanks man!!!! So the thing about the checkm8 is it could puke oil if your pump doesn’t have the seal which the 17’s do not. Honestly, with your bike and how many miles it has with no issues, I would not put this on it just because of the oil pump issue you have, and instead just run an external breather system that way nothing will get into the air cleaner. Even though you don’t see it there is definitely stuff getting in there it’s just not that much thankfully. So an external kit would keep it out of your intake but also not give you any more of a headache

This illuminates most of your blow by in excess of crank case pressure before it even gets to the breeder bolts. But there is some that still gets out, just barely any. So if you want to take all that gunk out of the engine no matter what you’ll need the external breather kit still.

This video is more about the install not the why although he does mention other videos. On your year bike there is a gasket that wasn’t engineered in on early M8’s which lead to oil sumping which is excessive oil in the crank case causing oil to froth and build up into the head and push out the breather bolts. Insure if you install this product on your bike you need to install a newer oil pump. During normal operation the motor can create excess case pressure and even more if you ride at high RPM’s. Because of EPA standards that pressure is relieved through a 1 way valve in your head and out through the breather bolt, which is the bolt your air cleaner is attached to, then that oil mist is directed into the throttle body to be burned up instead of left on the highway. The problem is that the pressure is excessive at higher rpm’s and ends up caking your filter and throttle body with oil. This product helps relieve that pressure and reduce oil caking your filter and throttle body with oil.

@RidinDad3 жыл бұрын
I talked to Trask about the above issue specifically because it happened to me too. That’s why I know the biggest culprit of it is the oil pump seating. Oil pump, over filled oil and excessive crank case pressure are incredibly more common than overheating. These bikes have safety features built in and 9/10 times they will shut off or down before any heat damage is caused

Yes different. I have a video explaining the differences between all of them. The external breathers reroute the excessive crankcase pressure away from the intake. The checkm8 works to eliminate crankcase pressure in general so it doesn’t even become excessive. Been watching videos regarding this issue of misting out the breather bolts in the head and into the air cleaner, and what I have determined is that excessive pressure from the crank is what is pushing the mist out of the breather bolts. Tell me if I'm wrong, but if you eliminate the pressure with this trask plate, what will come out of the breather bolts in the way of misting oil or water vapor? Wouldn't the vacuum created by the throttle body just pull hot air from the sump that is vented at the trans cover or vented dipstick? I saw that you and others have installed breather catch systems to catch oil and water vapor, but another video seems to indicate another function of these breather bolts in that they help create vacuum in order to help draw the oil back into the sump via the air intake as it pulls air thru the head breather bolts. I have asked the guys at DK customs if eliminating the pressure at the transmission cover or via a vented dipstick might just do what I suggested making the breather redundant at the air cleaner and they couldn't give me an answer. They said that these breather bolts have a one way valve also suggesting the purpose of letting pressure out but not allowing air flow in, which might point to a purpose for vacuum in the system. I also think that the amount of hot air is negligible when looking at the size of the vent holes in comparison to the huge amount of cool air that is let in via the air filter (when the system if vented at the crankcase via this trask device or any vented dipstick), thus not appreciable compromising the horsepower or torque that these aftermarket kit distributors claim their systems will save you. I haven't found any trained Harley Mechanics that engage in these discussions giving anybody any reason to address this system of excessive pressure or the application of any aftermarket products to alleviate the dumping of hot air and oil into the combustion chamber, and when I asked the salesman at the Harley dealer if it would void the warranty on my new bike if I installed this trask plate, he said "probably". Something I also thought of when seeing what the cover looks like and where it sits, is that I can't see the need to run a tube so high when there is no real visible oil within that chamber that the vent sits above. Similar applications of venting with a dipstick vent, I see there are products with a simple bolt with a filter screen so there is no attaching a rubber tube to the vent. You hear that there is a possibility of oil spillage if you tip the bike too far, but what is too far? The fact that they can sell this dipstick without a hose suggests to me there is no appreciable spillage. The transmission cover sits even higher above the sump than a dipstick vent and cosmetically it would seem that you could use a vented cap on top of the cover without any extra plumbing of hoses and filters. IT would be great if someone could nail down this issue in a simple way so that the answers don't just push more products to address a system that seemingly is created to aggravate the owner of an already expensive motorcycle.
@RidinDad3 жыл бұрын
Heres the reality of the issue....there will never be a fix from Harley because it's created the way it is due to EPA regulations. As far as your harley mechanic qoutes....there are many Harley Mechanics both past and presently employed by Harley that speak highly of external breather kits and even vented dipsticks etc. I have a more recent video on this subject that deep dives in to what causes all the various issues and what products do what...I even touch on fluid transfer from the primary too. The one way vavles are to prevent things getting sucked in to your breather bolts which you obviously don't want. Regardless of an external breather kit or not your breather bolts will still allow the bike to maintain a vacuum since the bolts are not changing. And I've never heard of anyone spilling oil out of any of the systems regardless of lean angle. I hope I touched on all of your points. And yes, you're pretty much correct about the need for both systems. If you have the checkm8 you're pushing minimal, if any, gunk out of your breather bolts. If I did not have an external breather kit first I may not have added it after the checkm8. It is nice to quantifiably see how much crap is bring pushed out those bolts before and after the checkm8 though.

@@RidinDad Found this: "The major engineering decisions that make this engine new (and vastly improved) amount to these: twin-plug four-valve heads, single camshaft, gear-driven counter balancer, and… wait for it… crankcase venting to the transmission. There’s more, but mostly in detailed design, intended to enhance those main features. Yes, even though crankcase breathing is routed to a transmission sump cavity, some air and oil will manage to make it into the heads. So, there’s this new one-piece breather valve located in each head. It’s more efficient than earlier designs and has a lot less to deal with in the first place. Call it cheap insurance. So, there’s this new one-piece breather valve located in each head. It’s more efficient than earlier designs and has a lot less to deal with in the first place. Call it cheap insurance." "Anyone tired of so-called “oil carryover” can rejoice in the fact that oil no longer goes anywhere near the air cleaner. Instead, it is routed into a cavity in the sump underneath the transmission. May not sound like much, but it’s a kind of quiet revolution in that age-old bugaboo of Big V-twins with small crankcases: oil control. The massive amounts of air and oil churning within is caused by the huffing and puffing of pistons pumping up and down, creating first pressure then vacuum inside. These pulses need to be vented properly. In the past it has been done directly from the cases, then up through the cylinder heads. Never, since 1936, has it been completely tamed. The proof has been found inside air cleaners for decades. After hard running, oil, in theory separated from air in advance, has still managed to make the occasional mess where you don’t want it… all along the right side of the motorcycle. No more… period! An under-appreciated improvement that can not be overestimated." thunderpress.net/motorcycles/harley-davidson/harley-davidson-milwaukee-eight-107-engine-the-next-generation-big-twin/2016/09/23.htm I understand there were problems with the sump systems in the early Milwaukee 8's that was supposedly addressed in 2020 when they installed a better oil pump to address the issues of foaming in the sump, which caused problems with oil distribution into critical areas of the motor creating wear. But the issues of blow by are suspect to conflicting information that seems to be carried over from the manufacture of older motors. Yeah the sumping is different from the excessive crankcase pressure. I agree with some of what you copy pasted from that article but not all. The M8's are incredibly well known for excessive blow by so I'm not sure why they claim that blow by is "a thing of the past" essentially. And as far as the excessive crankcase pressure routing back to the transmission ....the cavity is blocked off and ran back to the oil reservoir. Its just a channel within the transmission top cover area and not some magic space where pressure is allowed to vent unless you install an external vent like the checkm8 or vented oil dipstick so I'm not sure why they're writing all that on it.
@RidinDad3 жыл бұрын
And that oil transfer is not an excessive crankcase pressure issue...that is a separate issue. The blow by is not for this oil transfer issue. A Lot of people think these are the same but they're not. The transmission vent (from stock setup) is for the oil transfer issue and blocked off from the crankcase side

It looks like a butch to get in and I can see why you lost a socket. My question is why due the fueling or trask vs just relaxing the oil pump with the 2020 H-D one or S&S oil pump that should solve the issue vs just correcting the symptoms If I was to do it , I would do it at the same time I did the stage 2. I’d replace the cam. Oil pump and add the trask. It would give easy access then. I believe the increases in HP would come from when the engine was really hot and bogging it down. I could see it running cooler potentially. Trask makes high quality parts and I am sure it is very well made. Trask giving you one is a smart move as these is no way I would consider it just in their word that it’s great.
@RidinDad3 жыл бұрын
Well the 2020 oil pump was already on my bike and I never had an issue with it. I went with the upgraded oil pump when I did the cam job just for peace of mind and because it helps run more oil more efficiently and keep the bike cooler in general. The M8 engines are known for a ton of globi and excessive crank case pressure more so than the predecessor engines. And it’s a super well-known annoying issue that no matter the oil pump will always happen. So this illuminates that issue at the breather bolts almost completely. So that’s why I chose to do something like this
@ThePNWRiderWA3 жыл бұрын
@@RidinDad your videos are helpful. I am going to add the S&S cam plate and pump , as well as the trask cover as a winter project. Mostly for engine longevity. I had a buddy that was heading out on a big trip and day one his oil pump died and with it the engine. I hope you find the socket.

@RidinDad2 жыл бұрын
It’s great. Cuts down on blow by a lot and does exactly what it’s supposed to. Very big fan of it. You might have a problem. If your ol oil pump does not have the seal that Trask vent may puke oil everywhere.
@rickanderson23592 жыл бұрын
@@RidinDad thanks for making me aware of the oil pump seal. Can the seal be easily added?
@RidinDad2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Seal can’t be added to an early model pump because the seal cut out is not there. You’ll have to remove cover, remove cam plate, and remove pump and replace with whichever pump you decide to go with. I’m not 100% sure on the date that the new pump design exactly started in 2019 so try to get a solid answer from that either from Harley or a different shop or something concrete online then you can prove it. Maybe even do it with your Vin if you were able to that way you can for sure tell. There is a chance you will not have any issue without that seal being on the pump but it’s a super high chance that you will especially if you ride the bike in somewhat high RPMs. And it’s a terrible mess when all that stuff comes out of the transmission top cover hose

If the top cover is already vented, then why would your need to change it? What am I missing?
@RidinDad2 жыл бұрын
I’m assuming you missed the entire video since I explained it. There are three partitions in that transmission top cover. The left is the transmission. The middle is essentially an empty cavity made for the transmission to vent out the already in place transmission vent. The right is just an empty compartment with a hole at the bottom that drains back to the crankcase. This checkm8 product retains the original transmission vent and adds a vent for the crankcase through that partition there.

I believe, Crank case pressure will vent as necessary, including via the engine and primary seal and primary and transmission seals, as well as the clutch rod seal/sleeve. While I agree with taking blow by away from the intake, the issues are due to excessive crankcase pressure. Cooling the Jugs, seems a priority in preventing, premature wear. @@RidinDad I'm sure that catch can was filling to the brim baby.. mine is dry as the day I installed it. And I rail this bitch to 6400 rpm all the time. Are you sumping? or are you solving problems that you don't have?
@RidinDad3 жыл бұрын
I am not some thing at all you obviously have not watched any of my other videos so I’m not even gonna have this conversation with you when I cover all of the stuff. There was a little bit after 100 or 200 miles in the catch can and now after running the checkm8 there is absolutely nothing. Every engine is different and I already have the S and S pump like I stated and It wasn’t necessarily a problem like I already stated as well that needed to be fixed. This product merely helps some thing and has not made to be a make or break thing.

Yeah, don’t waist your money. It does not work. There is no increase in HP and it does not keep oil out of your air cleaner. I called Trask Tec, zero help.
@RidinDad Жыл бұрын
It most certainly does work in keeping oil out of your air cleaner. It doesn’t cut it down to 0 but it makes a substantial difference and decrease. I have an external breather kit with catch can on the bike and I could see the difference before and after. It does vent a lot which reduces crank case pressure. Do you have the new oil pump with seal?

Appreciate the compliment about the video man. And honestly, no matter what style of music I pick, somebody somewhere is going to hate it. So whether you dislike it, or somebody over in Alaska, dislikes it, or somebody that lives five minutes away from me in Florida dislikes it, no one is always going to be 100% happy with the music choice. So I tried to mix it up and I put music in there that I enjoy.

Why in the hell would you spend all that money when all you have to do is drill and tap your cover and install a hose barb fitting ?

Because it looks better and it more complete this way. I don’t like clearly visible diy things on my 16k dollar bike with 10k worth of add ons.

And the top cover is plastic as well. Not as good of a seal/purchase for threading with a plastic cover

@@RidinDad I'm at a loss as to how the fitting Trask used differs from one you can get at any hardware store , but it's your bike and your money
@RidinDad Жыл бұрын
I just explained it to you, but I’ll try to dumb it down even further. This product is one that is a machine piece of metal specific with all metal hardware included included in the read valve that is underneath minus the actual read piece which is plastic obviously. It is a fully replaceable and serviceable part that is an upgrade from the plastic top cover that comes standard on these bikes as well. There is nothing physically wrong with doing a DIY job as many people have. If that’s what you want to do on your bike then by all means go for it and it will work just fine. Assuming you use the correct pieces. I did not choose to do that and chose to use a purpose belt replacement part that looks better and matches the aesthetics of my bike currently.

Thanks for the input! I’ll make sure to stop all music immediately in my videos and I will remove every upload I have with any music in it. I’ll work tirelessly over the next 3-4 weeks to re edit all the videos without music & instead put heavy slow breathing in it’s place. Make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss these changes!!

I have a video called Blow by vs sumping. I highly suggest watching this video because it details a lot of the stuff you're talking about. The top cover and an external breather do different things. The top cover cuts down on excessive pressure before it reaches the breather bolts, and an external breather kit obviously just keeps whatever comes out of the bolts out of your intake. I still have both on mine but there is a huge decrease of liquid from the breather bolts since the checkm8 install
