I’ve owned 2 Sportsters. A 2007 1200c and an 1999 883c and I loved both of them. Even riding solo or with a passenger on the highways or carving mountain road-trips they always kept up with the big bikes my friends were riding. I recently sold my 883 because I found a 2011 Dyna Wide Glide (my dream bike since I was a little kid). Im 6’1 and wanted a bigger bike, I ever once did I regret riding my Sportys. They will always have a special spot in my heart.

My old man brought home a 2007 dyna wide glide on 7-7-07 and we had it for about 6 years. I always said I'd never buy a Harley less it was that same year and model, or an appropriate vrod. This thing has me totally reconsidering that.

I'm not a harley fan at all. But I can appreciate the sound of a traditional harley. And this sounds nothing like it. They are in a tough spot. They've held on to tradition so long that they really aren't going to have success trying to change. Plenty of import bikes that will out perform this for less money.

The thing is, the fanbase who do want the classic Harleys are getting smaller and smaller as they grow older. Younger generation does not have the same emotional attachment to the classic Harley styling and sound. If Harley wants to survive they also need to evolve and get on with the times, modernise their lineup while keep a few retro style bikes for people who do want them. Triumph got it right and are now doing really well.

Old timer here….and H-D owner (super glide) . I’m very happy the company they’ve re-invented the Sportster. It outlived its design by several years. It’s not a all uses bike. It’s an urban attack bike and as such acquits itself nicely. I’m thinking you will revisit the mid-position pegs. It’s a smallish ride and the cramped position will get old. The term “Sportster” in the ‘50s I think didn’t mean sports bike in our understanding of the term. Oh, and I understand exactly why it has to be…..but that exhaust note is the saddest sounds to emanate from a Harley……..sigh….

I own 2010 Forty-Eight. It’s the only year they made it with the orange-peanut gas tank. I get compliments for it from every Harley owner that sees it up close. It’s stage 3 and is an absolute monster.

Just recently picked up a 2022 48. Getting taller bars, new exhaust, and a better seat to ride the wheels off of it. And in a few years when my daughter is confident riding I will get something else and she can ride it through ANOTHER SET OF WHEELS!

Not that anyone will see this because the video is a years old, but what Harley could possibly do to engage a new audience, is to simply state, “Not every Harley is for everybody, but we make a Harley, for anybody”. This idea would absolutely work. It’s a modern take on the old Honda ad. Of people remember, back in the day, the imports made a splash with their, ‘You meet the nicest people on a Honda’ sort of marketing campaign.

I rode a '66 Sportster, S&S 4 5/8" stroke, 3 1/4" Dytch barrels for 77". S&S GAL carb, Sifton minus-minus cams. Magneto. The only gauge was a Smiths Tachometer. It weighed 440lbs and was very very fast. These new PanAm motors have a 3'" stroke like a Ducati and a huge bore. Perfect for a race bike and a 3-4K bandwidth. My old stroker was a tractor with a huge power envelope. The Pan Am motors require a downshift to pass someone at freeway speeds. Mine was 100% trouble free. This S has dozens of ways to fail or break. And I think it is made in India. The old sprotster had top quality high strength fasteners made in the US, the chain was a Diamond #1 available at any hardware store in the US.

1. The sportster s does have QC issues with the electrical connections; mine has been in the shop twice within a months time. And 2 the costs is closer to 18-20k. With those two items the motor is strong and I have had an enjoyable time. But I wouldn't recommend for brand new riders unless they keep it in rain or road mode.

The sound is down to the exhaust being constructed to pass European exhaust standards. You put an exhaust on it, you’re only really going to tell the difference at idle. More importantly, you should consider that Harley was never going to give you the power bump. Even with a 131 crate motor, they were only ever going to make a bigger engine, because why would they bother? They know their customers will pay a premium for just displacement, then go out and spend thousands more on cams, intakes, exhausts, and tunes. Like, you guys did this to yourselves, then when they build an actually good engine that competes with other brands, y’all are still complaining.

Yeah, I’ve heard terrible clips and decent clips, but facts, they sound way different in person. And, if I’m not mistaken, the 90 degree firing order is basically a better sounding version of a 270 degree crank on a p-twin. I ride a Rebel 1100 with a TBR slip-on, hang out with a bunch of Harley-owning club-riders, and they all think it sounds great. I don’t for a second believe a Sportster S will sound worse IRL than my Rebel.

I think your 0-60 was a lot quicker when you were merging with traffic. A lot of the things you like are the things I don't care for. I prefer an analog gauge, I don't need riding modes, and I don't care for the fat front tire. I do love that engine. I also prefer mid controls. I think if I had to choose between this and the Pan America that this would come in second place mainly because of the comfort over a longer ride. Might be a different choice if they came out with the Bronx with this engine instead of the 975.

The seat definitely would not be comfortable for more than a few hours at most. The Nightster is more comfortable position and the Pan America is even more comfortable. I have six bikes and these new digital speedometers are just awful and the tachometers are just useless.

@@XSkyKingXx It isn't out of spite. A digital tachometer is ok if you are at a steady speed, but trying to read one that is revving up is terrible. I can see an analog speedometer knowing where the needle is without having to look at it and process the actual number taking my eyes off of the road. Just because it has more technology in it doesn't mean it's better. Honda Goldwing still has an analog tach and speedometer and it has some of the most tech of any bike out there. Just like having bluetooth on a bike when I don't even listen to music when I ride. Because I don't like something doesn't mean I'm shitting on it. I'm just saying I don't want to pay for something that I don't use. I have my opinion and I'm not changing it because someone else doesn't like it.

I love my 21 sportster s as well. The heated hand grips are an extra you have to pay more for. I was bummed when it was advertised as standard and then upon receiving the bike I was informed it was not standard. I am 6'2" so I am a bit on the taller side. If I was about 5'6" it would be perfect size. I installed the heated grips, passenger pillion with back rest, and took off the swing-arm and added the 2 brothers license plate LED frame. I hope I can get a different exhaust and tune before too long. The maps is garbage so I just use my apple watch for directions and leave the screen on my music controls. The cruise control and riding modes works really well and I use them all the time. I can ride all year in AZ so well worth it to me.

Check out an FTR1200, it's capabilities are second to none. Wheelies, drifts, stoppies, cruising, city riding. Does it all. Just a more brutal bike, so keep that in mind. It's very rowdy.

Different experience for me. I love the bike, the best I have ever owned. I knew the heated grips were not on it before I ordered it and I ordered it two days after it was announced. So that is kind of on you (the button is there because the cover unit is the same as the Pan America that comes with them). Maps I find usable when within city limits. The seat and tail I just went with Corbin, no passenger. I also went with a bar riser (40mm up and 25mm back) and the HD smoke screen. The one thing in common here though that you don't get with a different street bike... Because it is a HD we could modify it to our personal preference within 6 months of its release because manufacturers know they will make money in selling those parts. Your bike is built to you, mine is built to me. A GSX 1000 is still shitty to ride for more than an hour 10 years after you buy it. This is my first HD and I would struggle to buy from a different manufacturer. If there is something off to you on this bike, just find the modification you need and order it.

@@MrEiniweini there’s not really a big aftermarket for this specific bike from what I can tell, outside of pegs or hand grips. I’d like to change the LED turn signals into something smaller and change out the exhaust. Outside of having it custom ordered, there’s maybe like 2 brothers and that’s it for an exhaust. I keep up with the forums and most everyone has just done custom work themselves.

The exhaust heat is something I have seen every person that got it have to try to find a way around. V&H has an option of full exhaust or slip ons I think. Really expensive though. I ride home from work at midnight so a loud exhaust will only get me a rope across the road. I would like to get rid of the sewing machine exhaust sound though.

I love the fact these are almost an evolution of the Vrod. I want a Vrod pretty bad but I would almost consider one of these over one because of the fact it has a 6 speed trans and cruise control. The forward controls on these wouldn’t be so bad if the bars were back farther in my opinion.

I work for YVO and we kept the last Sportster however it's an 883 iron. Most of the company signed the bike so it's covered in marker. The 1200 is still out there idk if I would know where but all of our sporsters were sold.

The comfort and body position on the Harley is what is important to me. 08 Sportster 1200 C and my 2014 ultra Ltd. never ceases to impress me. I have the power I need and the rumble to accommodate it. Not about speed for me, cruising is most comfy with character. Mid controls and a forward lean is a racing posture, the forward controls deep seat and back rest is cruising posture. Many styles for all ages.

A lowrider and a sporty side by side in the garage. The sporty gets the call 99 pct of the time. Sold the hog and kept the sporty. I am strictly an around town rider anymore and it's perfect for me. I love some of the new bikes like the Breakout but I know it would just sit there.

Regarding ride modes, one of the things I remember from my Multistrada, is it's fun to leave it in "rain" mode for a while and just forget about it, then in a couple weeks, switch back to "sport" mode. Bam! Brand new feeling of a race bike!

I'm 71 and started riding in the mid 60's. Through the years I've had Triumphs, BSA's , Norton's a couple of Japanese bikes, a scary Jawa with a side car, 25 years of various BMW's and last year I picked up a garage kept 2011 Sportster with 6800 miles on it. I wanted a change, so I got the Harley. I'm very happy with it. It talks to me like my old British bikes. Easy to take care of with the belt drive , electronic ignition, fuel injection, tubeless tires and thousands of parts available.

Pretty cool bike! I test rode one and was impressed by the power and handling. I then immediately test rode a Triumph Rocket 3 R and couldnt believe the power of it and it handled about as well as the Harley. Ended up getting a Rocket 3 R, but the Sportster S is a great new direction for Harley.

@@87Lowbird Results may vary, but for me, it’s much more rowdy than my Muscle was. I can throw it around much easier than then the VRod, and the acceleration is incredible. My best advice is to ride one, put it in sport mode and gather your own opinion on it.

My first road bike was a 1984 honda v30 magna, only made for 2 years, v4 500cc engine making 64 hp, started riding it in hay field on farm, yeah i dropped it a few times on street tires. Pretty high hp for a small bike and old so you don't care about it much, topped out at 90mph at 8,000 rpm 6 gear, definitely a starter bike a young guy could get hurt on but for a $2k best ride and great seat I drove it to work and home at 2am at night many times.

Nothing wrong with the Stone Age. My 1997 xl has more ponies and torque than the rev max sportster s and it weighs about the same. Sure it’s somewhat modified but it’s still a daily rider that gets 47mpg on 91 octane pump gas and runs mid elevens in the quarter and low sevens in the eighth. I also like some of today’s technology but absolutely do not want any of the electronic nannie stuff. So I recently bought a 2022 Yamaha mt07. The thing is an absolute hoot to ride.

The day I turned 16, In 73, had my 71 RD 350 paid for and waiting for me. Drum brakes front and rear, no abs, or anything fancy .Rode in the rain, snow, drunk, tripping on acid, high on some good weed. Wheelie all day, slice turns at speed. Now that right there is funny! I modded a '72 RD 350 back in the day, and was taking down just about everything in it's class at Pocono raceway. It was a rocket, and light and nimble, and you could throw it into a turn until you dragged the footpegs, and it never acted like it wanted to jump out from under you! One of the best 2 stroke street bikes Yamaha ever produced.😉

I have this same bike in black. I also did mid controls and it has TBR exhaust and TBR rear fender delete. I love it. On the track, it is a formidable bike. The ABS on this bike is probably the best there is on the market. It’s a lot of fun.

I have to say I kinda like the new Sportster. I'm glad they updated it. Mind you I'm not a Harley guy, well not anymore. I used to eat, sleep and dream Harley. Though the only Harley I owned was a 1984 Roadster. A Sportster with a fat bob style tank and 9 spoke solid wheels. I loved that bike but hated the Keihin carburetor. That sucker would clog if it sat for a few weeks. I was in the military and had to travel a lot. I'd get home and want to go for a ride but had to clean the carb first. I put three carb kits on it in 4 years.

Don't let it get wet your computer will fry and the only way you can hear the bike is to have a full straight pipe system and a tune which you will lose some power but not nearly as much as a lot of people think still did plenty of wheelies after going straight pipe with a tune

Still doesn't make sense to me. If you want it to put the sport in Sportster, then ditch the goofy fat front tire, put on mid controls from the factory, and add another disc up front. Why bother with adjustable suspension bits if you have a front tire that's twice as wide as it should be and only a single front disc on a 500+ pound bike? Also if they really want to attract newer or younger riders, put out a 750cc equivalent with ~70hp as you'd have to be foolish to think of this as a first bike.

I went to a dealership to look at one. I was surprised how small it was. It was in the shop for service. It had been dropped and had some scrapes. It had also been ridden pretty hard and put away wet. I don't think it had ever had a bath after it left the dealership, filthy.

The Sportster is a bike that I honestly used to scoff at, since I was riding a "man's bike", a Softail. Then I had the chance to hop on a buddy's Sportster, and it was some of the most fun I've had on a motorcycle, including the sportbikes I've ridden. It's nimble, quick, and raw, everything that got me into motorcycling in the first place. Is it _fast?_ No. But it's a lot more fun to ride a slower bike to its full potential than to ride a supersport at a quarter of it's potential. I had more fun banging through all 5 gears on the Sportster than I do riding my KTM Super Duke 1290 R in third gear everywhere.

I like that bike it looks good out of the box. My neighbour has one the same colour he has changed the exhaust and fitted a tail tidy. He has also painted that plastic bit on the tank the same colour as the tank, that looks better. 120bhp is good. Reminds me of bar hopper as it is pretty low. Love the colour of the engine that bronze colour.

I have heard that the Pan America has been their best seller even over the cruiser side. The pan America can be a good all around bike with 150 horsepower. Plus the pan America has that magic carpet ride semiactive electronic suspension.

You don't know how to properly use a front brake, so one disc is plenty. My 1996 XL1200S has dual disc's but only one piston per caliper.

That only matters when tracking. One disk is more than enough to break traction on the front tire. Multiple disks are for built up heat dissipation from constant braking because motorcycle disk brakes aren't ventilated.

I own an old Harley and the S. Love them both. It is good that Harley is making newer models and looking into new technology to capture new/next generation of riders. It has been Harleys problem for quite a long time. Trying to please the old school and the new alike. I hope they succeed in this endeavor. I love the Sportster S but just like some of the old Harleys they do have kinks. Problems with sensors and check engine issues... and some models with mechanical issues right off the showroom. I understand it's a new step and a new bike, and Harley seems to be getting the problems solved with ecu/software updates. I just hope they give faster support, updates and upgrades rolled out for this bike to make it appealing and capture newer riders. If that exhaust sound doesn't cut it you can check out Zard, Cobra Sport, Jekyll and Hyde and TBR just to name a few. With these things installed, it becomes a different bike :).

Great review Sean! The extra modes and assistive devices are one way to go for a newer rider, but I would generally recommend the old school method (for new riders) of buying a good used bike you can handle. Learn to ride it properly and then get a more powerful bike if you feel the need. That said, the new Sportster looks like a lot of fun! Ride on!

Nice bike, and I understand why HD is leaning this way, but I really think they should have continued to make the Air cooled Sportster as well. I believe in just a few years we will no longer recognize HD, and the historic engine lope is a thing of the past. Sooo I will hold on to my Road King. Even the big twins are now liquid cooled heads. I'm sure will soon be full liquid cooled.

Literally everything is better about a liquid-cooled engine. Nostalgia is for suckers. This engine is pretty much the same size as the iron 1200, producing double the HP and (about) 30% more torque, while being lighter weight. And the only reason Honda can release the 1084cc ptwin with no issues and HD has struggled with glitches in the RevMax is because HD are inexperienced with liquid cooling and its customer base (like what you are doing) are keeping them tied to the finest technology of 1974. Like, you guys glorify an engine design that is inherently less powerful and less reliable. If HD put a RevMax into a Road King or (better yet) a Road Glide, I’ll mortgage my soul to join the Bar and Shield.

I think Harley have missed a trick by reining in the motor from the full power one in the pan America. I think if they'd unleashed the full beast (with twin disk on front) they'd have sold like hot cakes, even taking converts from Japanese bikes. Quite frustrating i.m.o. I think, Harley's biggest problem is that they've clinged on tradition and old schoolness for too long. The "po-ta-to" sound is what makes these old school Harleys (Sportster, Road King, Road Glide, etc.) desirable, at least for me. Using this RevMax engine in an old school-ish cruiser frame seems pointless, because it loses it's character. They implemented it well when introducing the Pan Am, because they understood the assignment: make a non-traditional Harley, this is also why the Sportster S is a miss. They should be developing naked bikes, that's more fitting for this new engine. They see how well the Ducati Monster and KTM 1290 are selling, they should enter the league of "ovepriced, large-displacement V-twin naked bikes". That's what would get them sales.

In the mid-60s if you had XLCH Triumphs would eat your dust until the Sporty blew up. They had great clutches, brakes and power, handled good too. Fast but fragile was the verdict.

I'm a small guy (5' 5") and need a smaller bike. So I built a '59 CH kick-start with a 2" Tilotsen carb and magneto. It fit me like a glove and was crazy fast. All manual, all metal. Definitely not a "girl's bike".

I’ve never liked sport bikes, I’ve grown up loving big loud Harley’s and choppers, although I’ve never cared if someone else liked sport bikes, however the more I get into motorcycles, the more I realize everyone is so insecure about other people not liking their bike, Sport bike guys especially seem to hate the most, calling everyone else fat, slow, old etc. seemingly without understanding of why others like that stuff in the first place. For me I don’t really care about speed, I care about the look, sound, and feel of the bike. And I’m totally cool with others liking something else, what I’m not cool with however.
