At 4401 Sheriff Road before Good Success Church was another church called Prayer Mission. We were there for years led by the late Pastor Frances B Madden (my mother) and I currently worship at St. Rose Pentecostal. I knew Sheriff Road/Deanwood have great history. Thank you for the excellent work you do.

Hey my mother grew up there at the time it was a middle class area with blacks that took pride in the area of course it's gone down now. I have great memories there. You mention churches. We went Great Baptist church of Deanwood.

Thank you for the Sheriff Road history. I lived in the area on Just and Hunt Streets from 1963 until 1996 off and on. I haven’t driven through there since early 2000’s. Keep up the DC history. You really do your homework.❤️

Spectacular information and the number of esteemed black professionals that were involved in creating homes, stores, neighborhoods along with the black men and women that ran them are a testament to our knowledge, skills and abilities. The names of these people (Cassell, Woodson, Burroughs, Parkers, etc) and the contributions they made in my life leave me shaking my head. With all this talent, how do we lose our way now . . .

Mr. Giles, the architect mentioned, worked with my father in building 35 to 40 properties in the 20's, 30's and 40's in SE DC. He had a lot of novel elements which added value to the properties yet reduced building costs. He's a man to be studied.

This was a great visit to my old neighborhood. I lived in Suburban Gardens Apts. (born 1949 to 1965). The A & S Grocery Store used to be Chasen's Grocery Store. I'd like to know their history. Could you post anything you may have? I will check the census for DC soon.

Was married in First Baptist Church of Deanwood in 1979. Was raised in the area, went to Benning Elementary School and played baseball against the Deanwood Yankees Rec team in the 60's. Thought I knew Deanwood until I watched this video. PS The old firehouse on Minnesota Avenue , Engine Company 27, was allegedly built to accomodate Black firemen. Great lesson!

Wow. I lived on 46th & Sherriff for 17 years, from 1997-2014. I knew Mr. Parker personally and used to get my haircut at Nooks. I also knew the folks at Dave Browns. I saw the changes but did know why. What a shame!!! Dave Brown, Nooks and Parker's were cornerstones in the neighborhood.

I enjoyed the deep dive into the history. I am disappointed you missed the business next to the A&S grocery. Billy's Valet was an institution in that neighborhood from the seventies through the early 2000s. It was where I had my first real job. The business was owned by Amir Majeed (Amos Montgomery) and maintained after his passing by his family.

Please accept compliments for this production. I learned plenty. One thing I was surprised to find that was NOT included - PEPCO's Benning Road power plant, built in 1906. It was a classic example of environmental injustice, as it burned coal that spewed mercury, lead, sulfur dioxide and other nasty things into the air, as well as PCBs into the river. This power plant was located UPWIND of Deanwood.
