Travel inspired by my favorite geologist; hunting fossils in Washington

Over the past year, I became obsessed by a Central Washington State Geology Professor named Nick Zentner who shares his love for the subject by live-streaming his Geology lectures on KZbin. This week we travel to Ellensburg, Washington to see some of the places he has shared with his students. Along the way we find plant fossils, petrified wood, wonderful treats at Vinman's Bakery, and a Bavarian style village in the Cascades of Washington.

Love your post this week. We live in British Columbia and because we knew nothing of the geology of Washington We would ignore it on our annual trips to California and Arizona. Nick Zentner has given me a whole new appreciation for the Eastern Washington and what it has to offer. In addition your posts have also given many ideas for us to visit on our trips south. Thanks..

I’m from California as well and just got back from a Nick Zentner inspired trip up to Washington. After stopping at Vinman’s for cinnamon rolls, we went across to the college to eat them near the geology building. Headed to Dry Falls after. Spectacular scenery and it was fun knowing all the geologic history of the area! We wrapped up that part of the trip driving west on the Sunset Highway to Seattle. 😍

I just love your videos. We just purchased a new 2022 Coachmen Beyond 22C Li3 and won’t get it until end of the year. But we are learning a lot by watching your videos. Good to see your husband who is a large man fits okay in the van. We are in the same situation. I’m 6’5” as well and that has always been a concern for me. My wife Marcy is an outdoor photographer and wants me to travel with her on her trips. See that your husband can handle the cramped quarters gives me inspiration. Watching your videos provides us with great ideas on how to live in this kind of situation. Thanks!

There's no getting around an occasional head bump. Try not to wear a hat in the van as it blocks your view of things. But we've joked that maybe he should wear his bike helmet. If you have a good sense of humor, you'll do great.

I love your bib overalls. It is hard to find hickory striped overalls. I started wearing them every day after I retired. They are great to hike in. I've tried many brands. The best that I have found are Round House out of Shawnee, OK. They are the only bib overalls still made in America. John Ratzenberger (Cheers) did a video tour of their factory. And they come with a hammer loop on the leg for your rock hammer!

It’s been a while since we’ve had cell coverage to comment on a video but we’ve been with you each week and it has kept our longing to spend time with you alive and well. Today’s video pushed that over the top. Makes you marvel at how connected to friends you can become without spending “real” time with them. As we’re watching Lynn said several times.. “she’s so cute”. I know… at our age it’s hard to be “cute” but you both are. Seeing John’s leg made us both cringe out loud… so sorry… both for the accident and pain and for the lost time doing what you love. We want you both to know that as our desire to travel long distances has started to diminish it’s not the national parks or great sites that make us want to point our van west… it’s the two of you. Not sure when that’s going to happen but hopefully soon. Much love from your NC family. BTW, Lynn wants to know about your hat with the ponytail hole. :-)

Before Covid (and I think still), Nick Zentner had a "filler" series on the Seattle PBS Station KBCS called Nick on the Rocks. It's target is the wider PNW audience that doesn't have a geological background. It is available on KBCS's website. I grew up in the Columbia Basin and both went to school and later worked at CWU. This geology is in my bones.

I've had the same induction cooktop and pan for several years. The pan has been the worst non-stick pan I've used. I found that olive oil cooking spray has worked the best as long as the pan is kept sparkling clean. I thought I was, but notice a dull film in the center where it gets hot, that I could only see when I held it under a light. I may have been the person that recommended the Chili Lime as I've done that to other KZbinrs. Currently, I can only find it at Walmart and Fred Myer. Great video! Steve in OR.

My go to thermometer is a Thermapen by Thermoworks. Mine is decades old and still gives 3-4 second accurate readings. I see they are down to 1 second on the new ones. Quality equipment. Also you can use your hammer to help you on both the way up and the way down. Its best to have that pointy bit buried in the scree, if you tumble all you do is let go, no worries about getting punctured.

@@FromShetoMe Toss the pick ahead of you and bury it in the scree, surprising how much you can then pull on it to help you up. Put the pick behind you, handle coming in under one arm, that same arm holding the handle. If you need to slow down lean back, weight on the pick. If you can slide do so on the pick and both heels. Try and lift your butt up a bit, no fun slamming that into a larger rock. I realize you have a rock hammer not a climbing pick but should still work, just not as good.

You mentioned that you couldn't look at a hiking trail map without cell service. We had the same issue, so we found an app called Gaia GPS that helps in that situation. It allows you to see trails even when you don't have a signal!

Another excellent video. Some places we’ve been to and some not. Nick Zenter is my new favorite geologist too and I’m a geologist. You really had me excited at first… I thought you were going to interview him. Funny, cause if he has a catch phrase it would be “feeder dike”. Nice new rock hammer, but it is a hard rock hammer. You should get a “soft” rock hammer, bricklayer type for splitting beds of shale when looking for fossils. What time of year was this filmed? We have been to Ginko Petroglyph SP twice and it has been almost too Hot to hike. Love Ginkos, but was disappointed with the caged display of the petrified wood and how few Ginkos there actually are. The petrified wood on display at the visitor center and the shop outside the park is better. If you haven’t been there you should check out the petrified forest near Calistoga. Cheers!

Kx RV66 or Debbie (or anyone else) , Any model recommendations for hammer(s) for a beginner? It looks like a hard and a soft rock hammer are both recommended so I am interested in both. This video has got my interest and I am now watching Nick's video's.

So I’m wondering if you have any videos that describe what electronics, cameras, iPads/computers, microphones you use to shoot your videos? We are not going to be posting on KZbin but my wife loves to build videos that document our adventures. Also how do you store/secure your gear when you are away from your van?

I think the only way I can get a precise location is to go back to my footage and see if it is on that. And I can't do that until we are back home in a few weeks. I'll do my best to remember and see if I can find it. I know it was off Old Blewett Highway (off Highway 97). But if you go to this video (around minute 46-47) Nick talks about the geology of the area: www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=bing+crosby+sunset+highway&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:deea6399,vid:5LJzEtzsYsc,st:0 That's probably where I got the information.
