Gather is where the player gains enough control of the ball to hold it, change hands, pass, shoot, or the player cradles the ball against his body.....You're based it off of them holding the ball with both hands LMAO that's not entirely the gather bro LOL

Just make it official that your total step count can't be 4+ counting the gather step. It should just be gather(1) 1 2 instead of gather(1 2+) 1 2. Only exception would be if the ball is tipped by the defender. It'll be easier to call since basically both feet should never hit the ground twice once the dribble is discontinued. Illegal Gather is a perfect term for it

tbh anything more than taking 1 step during the gather seems unnecessary. The NBA should just officially make the gather a single step to make calls easier and avoid confusion
