I’m an international flight attendant for one of the major airlines, and have 30+ years seniority. I agree with almost everything you’ve said. My opinion may be a bit skewed since I only fly international. When I pack for a trip, I pack whatever I think is the appropriate outfit for the layover. BUT, I always have an emergency dress in my bag. I do this for several reasons. Often a dress is just more comfortable for sightseeing, and you look good if you end up going somewhere with special requirements (like Buckingham Palace tour, churches in Italy, etc.). Also, the dress comes in handy if you get an invitation to something special (opening night ballet at the Royal Albert Hall and some of the royals might be there [they weren’t], the top dinner cruise on the Seine, the Moulin Rouge, a swanky dinner at a fancy restaurant-these have all happened to me and thank goodness I had something to wear! But also, my trip might bust, and I have to endure an 8-18 hour flight home! I personally find a dress more comfortable when squished into a seat. But it’s only a particular kind of dress. It must be made of some kind of fabric that doesn’t wrinkle much. It must be black, navy, or dark claret. It must preferably have 3/4 length sleeves or short sleeves. It must be long- not to the floor, but mid calve. It must have a rounded or slightly scooped neckline. And it must be a simple design. This can be accessorized with a scarf or with a necklace depending on situation. A little jewelry will dress it up or down. I always have a pashmina type thing that will keep me from freezing if the night gets cool, or the plane gets cool. Easiest to take on and off. Can be a blanket or pillow if necessary. I always have my 3” heels, but can put on flats for long walks. This also helps when using the bathroom in countries that just have a hole in the floor. I also always have my non-underwire bra, because being squished in a seat with your underwires digging into your ribs is miserable! It’s required for us to look a certain way for travel, but if you end up in first or business class it’s absolutely mandatory. And I will tell you that if we have to upgrade a passenger at the last minute, yes, how they are dressed is a make or break issue. We won’t upgrade someone in jeans, tee shirts, tennis shoes, flip flops, etc. It doesn’t happen a lot, but it does happen. And clothes make the difference. How you look really does matter. Customs and immigration will treat you better (all countries), hotel reception will treat you better, taxi drivers, police, and just people in general. This is a big part of how I’ve gotten invited to some very special and exciting things. And it all comes down to one dress, a scarf, a pashmina, decent shoes, and a little tasteful jewelry. Doesn’t take up much room in your bag either. I would really appreciate it if you would do a video on the medications that no one should get on any plane without! Please as a favor to all flight attendants worldwide! Every one should have the pain reliever of their choice (Ibuprofen, Tylenol), peptide bismo caplets, Gas-X, and Earplanes( NOT GENERIC! They don’t work!), and a few chewable children’s aspirin (you never know). Also any other medications that you require. NEVER check your medications!!!! You would not believe how often passengers ask us for these items, and either must have a doctor’s permission to give them to you, and some of these things we don’t have anyway. Sorry to write so much, but I hope this helps someone. Oh, one more thing, bald/balding men should bring a knit hat. Thanks so much for a great video.

Dawn dish soap works absolute wonders on clothing items! At your first opportunity drip Dawn dish detergent full strength to completely cover the entire dribble. I found the best way to deal with putting a jacket or sweater/sweatshirt on or taking it off it to do it in conjunction with a trip to the lavatory. we did get nailed for my wife's hair spray and face scrub flying out of iceland - chose to let them go, rather than check the suitcase with her medication. my fault for not paying close enough attention when she was packing her carryon - they went in my checked bag on the outbound trip. I ended up wearing my boots on the homeward flight, to clear up weight and space for bringing purchases home. I feel I did as well as could be expected. I had two backup changes of clothes that didn't get worn. - but we also didn't have any incidents that would have required using them. so a poorly timed storm would have made them necessary. of course, as a guy, I had a total of two pairs of pants, including the golf pants I wear for the pane trips. my trusty travel jacket let me carry Mrs Ken's bag as my personal item, while she carried her CPAP as hers. I also did end up eating one of my pocket snacks, in each direction this time.

In the bookstore, we could buy books, and as long as we returned them in good condition, we could bring them back when we were finished with them for a full refund. This is what I do for footwear: I pack my tennis sneakers in my personal item (or my carry on, but usually my personal item) and wear a pair of slides through security. Depending on how I feel that day, I might also wear two layers of socks. The outer layer of socks will be an old pair, or even a pair of mismatched ones that I can't find the twins of. Wearing slides (nothing fancy, just a pair of grey ones from Dollar Tree) makes going through security a breeze, and in most cases I don't have to take them off. If I DO have to take them off, they're loads more easy to put on than shoes (even the most comfy of slip-ons). The extra layer of socks protects from the grossness of the airport floor, and gets discarded after security. Also, after security, when I'm rearranging my items, that's when I switch over to my tennis shoes again. Then I store my slides, bagged up, in wherever my shoes were before.

Laurie will I be able to attach my neck pillow to my back pack or will they say that is an extra item and therefore not allowed?
@TravelTipsbyLaurie20 күн бұрын
Hi Tricia, I do not know. One viewer said that Spirit counts it as extra. You could wear it into the plane.

I learned the hard way that if a person has a lot of hair, to have it secured. I left my long curls loose the last time I flew and my hair kept messing up the scan.

Do xray machine pick up hip and knee replacements?
@madelinebark8473Ай бұрын
If you have any joint replacement - ankle, shoulder too, not just hip and knee, you need to tell the TSA agent before you even go through the scanner. And, of course, joint replacements are metal, so, of course, they will show up on X-ray.
@camiller4916Ай бұрын
I had a total knee in 2023 and yes, it has set off every machine I’ve been through. I got a physical pat down in France coming home and always have to go thru the full body scan in the US, coupled with a bag search.
@gingereaves4097Ай бұрын
I had a knee replacement Nov. 2023 and flew from Louisiana with a layover in Atlanta to a small airport in Southern Georgia. Leaving that same small airport, I set off the alarm and had to have a pat down. The TSA Security lady was so apologetic (I'm 73) that I felt sorry for her. I told her not to worry and that I was fine.
@madelinebark8473Ай бұрын
@@camiller4916 Don't even go through the scanner. Tell the agent that you have artificial joints before. My husband has bilateral knees and they take him to another spot to scan him. No bag search ever.
@lauriehume3395Ай бұрын
Thank you so much I figured that they would show up on xray just wanted confirmations. I feel we have more and more individuals with replacement joints then before! 😉

Just came back home after a trip and tried so many of your tips! Thank you thank you! I used everything because I did a capsule wardrobe. Wore layers on the plane and was comfortable all the way! I had my 'plane bag essentials' and it was quick to grab!

Not just because they are cold, but sandals are dangerous. Many people are oblivious to the world around them. I was in the Denver airport and a young man in his twenties, (not known for their good judgement), spun around with his skis on his shoulder and clocked me in the head. Someone could drop a heavy suitcase, or step on your sandaled feet and cause a fracture. No way to start a vacation.

I love to wear black or navy leggings, a full length front zipper hoodies and hijabs to keep my neck, décolletage, my ears as well as my head warm. I hate regular pants. Leggings never drop to the floor. I have worn wear long dresses on my several trips. A long dress covers my thighs, knees and legs. It is much easier for me to use bathroom, I just flip my long dress up, gather it in my hand. The dress never touches the floor or anywhere.

The big mystery is whether my flight will be freezing cold or roasting hot. There doesnt seem to be any pattern. I've been in flights where my feet were so hot, i had to take my shoes AND MY SOCKS off. Yes, very embarrasing. Now i wear sandals. If my feet get cold, i have socks in my personal bag.
@TravelTipsbyLaurieАй бұрын
It is a mystery. Layers are ke. It sounds awful but my feet got super hot one time and I did take my socks off while seated. Putting them back on took time.

Sweatshirt vs Zipped jacket? Why can't you just get up in the aisle, use the opportunity to go the bathroom or stretch and take it off? Works for me every time. Saw a comment on another video from an ex security person who said not to wear the hood in the airport and even better tuck it in so you can't see it. Apparently hoods might be a red flag for security. Also wearing baseball caps or hats should be avoided for the same reason.
@madelinebark8473Ай бұрын
Lots of times you CANNOT get up in the aisles during a flight. Turbulence is a very real thing and you just can't get up and walk the aisles. Plus depending on where you're sitting you could have to ask one OR two people to get up when you leave and then get up when you come back to your seat.

The best thing for ink is hairspray! This works on the most delicate fabrics. I even used it on my daughter's and other's dance costumes at times.

Is this a comedy sketch? 🤷 I'm sure 99% of people wouldn't dream of wearing these clothes for flying. It's obvious how impractical they would be.

When is the last time you've flown? You should see what 99% of the people wear on flights. I'm always just shaking my head. Short shorts, sleeveless tops and sandals, dresses, large hats. It's amazing. They're dressing for fashion and not practicality.
