You can also take the direct train JR Hashidate from Kyoto Station. I tried to take this train but missed it at Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station after going to Kyoto Railway Museum, which is 1 stop away from Kyoto Station. JR Hashidate only runs 6 trips per day, 2 hours interval, so I waited for 1 hour and took the next train and just like in this video, and transferred at Fukuchiyama Station to a local train called Tango AO-MATSU Train operated by Tango Railway. This train has only 1 car but is very beautiful. I think only 2 types of JR Passes are accepted here: JR Kansai Wide Area Pass and JR Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (I used this). I arrived at Amanohashidate around 4pm and it was getting dark. The nearest ropeway was still operating so I took it and went up to see 1 of 3 views in Japan. Sadly, I do not have time to explore the other side but I will want to go there again.

In November 2014, I walked from central Kyoto to the Museum. It was a beautiful walk as there is a well tended garden alongside the tracks. I spent the day at the Museum and thoroughly enjoyed it!! Well worth the price of the ticket. Their live steam ride was running but they have only a short length of track. Go there and to the other museums in Japan. Dedicated workers abound at such places. Thanks for all your YT videos!!

Thanks for sharing this. The Kansai hiroshima pass would work for the entire route from Osaka to Amonohashidate and back right?
