This is what resonates with me as well, I visited Japan first time in February and decided not to go by typical tourist guide. And booked ryokan Inn in middle of nakasendo trail. Didnt know before hand i have to walk the trial of nakasendo. I hiked and walked when the weather was still cold and not the season people would normally go for trial. But im glad i did it, amazing scenery and nature. Tokyo city and metropolis japan are nice but a true japan experience are those outside of cities life. Highly recommended

Thank you so much for so much information and nice "behind the scenes". I'm currently living in Japan and have been out hiking for some time now. Usually small day trips and a bit of camping, but to see the Nakasendo Way makes me feel planning a longer trip. Just being out in nature walking on those old roads that have been used from the Japanese for hundreds of years ago is an incredible feeling. I'm not sure about Kyoto to Osaka, but Walk Japan offers a walking tour from Kyoto to Tokyo and that takes 11 Days.

It's very manageable. The most hiked in a day is 6 Miles (9.5 km).

Thank you for this video, I am intending to hike this section of Nakasendo in April. Is it possible to use Nakatsugawa as a base and do it as a few day walks and use the public transport to take us back to our base and forward to our last end point each day? (Although at least one night in that Inn looks advisable).

Great choice on this hike, you're going to have an incredible time. Using Nakatsugawa as a home base and doubling back each day is certainly possible, but might become tedious each day. The sections of the hike featured in this video are leisurely 4-6 hour hikes and if you know where you're staying each night, the owners of the inns will be able to arrange for your luggage to be couriered to you next destination.

@@michaelfroger1816 absolutely and if for nothing else, it's a great experience... sleeping on the tatami mats, the multi-generational, family-run environment, the home cooked meals... it's really quite wonderful! Just be prepared that they are really like bed & breakfast-style lodgings. Shared bathrooms, no frills rooms, shared dining rooms. Be sure to look up some of the formalities and customs!
