What’s the one thing hikers think about? FOOD! In this video, we hike from Mundu to the town of Kyanjing Gompa. We start with some good luck from the mani stones, prayer wheels, and stupas. The skies are blue and the weather is perfect for hiking. Cedar finds strawberries, and we forge the entire hike. Once in Kyanjing Gompa, we visit the local yak cheese factory. As the afternoon clouds roll in, we warm up in the hotel with fresh yak milk tea and aged yak cheese. For dinner, we try traditional Nepalese meals such as Dal Bhat and Dhindo! Dhindo is new to us, be sure to watch and learn about this traditional staple food in Nepal. Eat, hike, eat, hike, eat, sleep…repeat. This is a hiker’s dream (well, maybe add a hot shower in the mix). Our stomachs are full and happy.
Follow our journey as we continue to backpack and hike with our three young kids in Nepal.
We were backpackers before having kids, and luckily we get to continue sharing our love for backpacking with our kids. If you love hiking and want to hike with your kids, Nepal is a great destination for your family.

ABOUT US
We are the Bags Packed Family: Jonathan and Kelly with our three children. We sold our home in Alaska, USA, seven years ago, and headed overseas. We are teachers and found fantastic teaching positions in India. Two years later, we moved to the United Arab Emirates. Three years after that, during the beginning of the pandemic, we made the move to our current teaching jobs in Indonesia. We love traveling and finding adventures as a family. We hope that our travels will inspire and provide our children with the confidence to meet new people, try new foods, and enjoy learning a new language. We hope our vlogs will inspire you to get out and travel, too!

Rs500+ for 300gms of cheese is quite high for any standards. Nepal has become soo expensive these days, even the goods they produce locally has become expensive, where as the wages for working class hasn’t gone up much. Some of the daily consumption goods price are similar or even higher when you compare to US. Don’t know how the poor will be able get out of the poverty hole.

Last October I trekked to Annapurna Base Camp being dretched in rain continuously for 3 days straight. I had lost the excitement to go ahead but then I saw two little foreigners probably aged 6-7 like your kids returning back from ABC. After seeing them, I felt like it would be a shame if I had given up being so close to Machhapuchre Base Camp. I was amazed by their stamina. Haha! I got all the motivation I needed and finally when we reached ABC it was a bright sunny day with a good 360° view of mountains. I enjoyed your vlog. Your kids will have this in their core memory forever. Trek safe!

The traditional way of eating dhindo is to grab a small chunk and use your thumb to make a hole and really dip it into the curry, gravy, or sauce. Make sure there is some sauce inside the hole. And you just swallow it without chewing or you could chew. Dhindo is a old Nepali food. It’s a true survival food. All you need to make it is water and flour. Back then travelers, soldiers, holy men, Shepards just carried flour and water was available in the river or lake and they made quick food. For curry we have gundruk, it’s a dried mustard leaf, radish. It’s also true authentic old Nepali food, truly survival food. All you needed was gundruk and flour to make a meal. Quick boil gundruk with salt and boil flour and you have gundruk dhido. Gundruk dhido is said to be as old as the universe 😅

'n' is almost silent in 'dhindo'. It is usually not chewed but swallowed whole after you dunk it in soup. It is not easy in the beginning to swallow without chewing but traditionally it is done that way. Anyways, enjoy your days in Nepal! 👍

Okay I'll elaborate the actual meaning of the prayer flags and those five colors. Blue means space. It is believed that anger can be transformed into wisdom when meditating on this color. White means air. White can cut the delusion of ignorance and turn it into the wisdom of reality. Yellow means earth. Yellow transforms pride into wisdom of sameness when visualized in meditation. Green means water. Green transforms jealousy into the wisdom of accomplishment. Red means fire. Red transforms the delusion of attachment into the wisdom of discernment
