My mother's uncle's owned Mon Valley Transportation. They had a jitney from Clairton to Glassport then streetcar to Mckeesport. A jitney mean a nickle in Scottish.

Visited Pittsburgh for 1st time last month and love the city... I just felt at home unlike anywhere else I've visited. Maybe it's all the saints connected to St Anthony's chapel? They're my family in Pittsburgh! Love the PCC streetcars... represents best times for life in Canada and US. We all have the PCC to remember so fondly! Greetings from Toronto Canada!

I've never been in Pittsburgh but if that past fascinates some of you who grew up in that city but never saw one, i can identify. We had that streetcar system too in LA til the 60's. The red car and the yellow car.

Pittsburgh's trolley system was being dismantled from the late 1950s to the mid 1960s. This is why there is so much footage from that time, People were documenting them before they were gone.

You have to remember the history. None of the privately owned public transportation companies in Pittsburgh ever made money. The company that ran these streetcars, Pittsburgh Railways Company, went bankrupt and the county government decided that the taxpayers would support the public transit system. The Port Authority was created, and gradually replaced the streetcars with buses that allowed more flexibility. It also killed at least one urban legend. The 56C streetcars ran through several heavily wooded areas between Lincoln Place and McKeesport. Legend had it that rogue Indians periodically shot arrows at the streetcars so if you didn't want to get an arrow you didn't sit by the windows.

@@spaceflight1019 Amazing an urban legend like that existed before people started using street drugs en masse. Only a person with a fried brain would believe that.

1:38 one can see the WTAE tower looking as I remember it. It looked that way into the 1970s.

I was thinking that looked like the Ardmore Blvd/Parkway interchange. That median still exists today, but has trees instead of trolleys.

Nice video except for the background music. I especially liked the light blue trolley that was seen briefly. It was a nice change.

Looks like it take them awhile to figure out buses were the way to go.
