With basic Japanese skills, you can ask most of the questions posed. The problem comes with when you hear their response because it's either: A) too fast or in an accent too heavy for you to understand or B) full of words you've never heard of or don't know the meaning Very rarely have I had a yes/no answer to any questions I've asked.
@japankofun6 жыл бұрын
Same issues exist with not really knowing a language when using a phrasebook - you have to decipher the replies.

I don't know about this one, man. As a language learner, it kinda takes the fun out of it and that sort of high when you butcher their language but correct yourself along the way as you start using it more and more. Use this if you want, but learning the language has a more human feel than just pointing a robot at someone's mouth. Even if it is just basic phrases and such.

I can see that overall, the device translated quite well. However, you have to know that language is dynamic and given how advanced technology is, there would still be some mistakes. For example, at 0:49 and 5:47 when she said "thank you" and the device translated it as "arigatou" which is not wrong literally but considered impolite to use when talking to strangers. "Arigatou" is an informal thank you while the formal one (and which should be translated into) is "arigatou gozaimasu". So you see, these kind of issues can't be detected by technology. But it could also be due to the tone she's using. I noticed that she said thank you in a bright tone which made the device translated it to the informal thank you in a bright tone too. I personally would love to learn the languages myself, to me that'd be more meaningful. It "connects" better too. I mean, after all we're humans communicating with humans. It's fine to use the device when it's important and you wouldn't want to say something wrong and made someone uncomfortable. I understand that it's impossible to learn all the languages of the countries you're visiting but I don't mean, master the language (become fluent at it). It's sufficient just by learning basic phrases. I mean, the effort is what counts.

Amazing but I wonder if the Japanese people will be annoyed with it. Japan is a fast paced country and people don't like being held up. This device seems to do exactly that

You have the wrong impression of Japan. People would wait in a queue for hours. And when there is a red light at the crossing, people wait for it to turn green, even if there are no cars on the road. Thats how patient they are. What the west usually refer to as face paced is the technology, not the people.

This translator can be a useful learning tool. You can speak English to the translator, listen to what the translator says in Japanese, and repeat what the translator says in Japanese. What down what the translator says in Japanese and practice speaking Japanese to people.

When i go to Japan next year Im going to bring a device called Fluent talk T1. T1 is a translating device similar to the one you’re using in your video, except instead of it being one way, it has two speakers and two microphones on the top and bottom half of the device. That way each person can speak into the microphone from their position and it’ll be translated and spoken to the person that they’re speaking to. Basically you can have a conversation with 2 or more people that speak different languages while the device does the translating. Just to clarify, the conversation can only be held by you and the person you’re speaking with, it doesn’t have the ability to pick up and Translate a large group at the same time.
