I’ve been viewing your back videos. So far this is my favorite. A nice balance of visual information and explanation. Suites my attention span perfectly. It the learning style of the Japanese master. “Don’t ask...watch”. Words just fall short. Quicker learning watching than listening.

I shutter to think what McMaster-Carr would charge for a knob like yours. I used to drive people crazy making my own knobs for instruments I built, but I never reached this level of neatness. Very nice.

@DudleyToolwright6 жыл бұрын
Interesting and informative video as usual. Do you notice that the camera catches things you never notice while you are machining? I was watching the wonderful closeup you drilling out the center of the brass and you can see the drill slowly precess around some center point. You can see that the drill flutes are not touching the outside edges, because of the precession making the hole a bit oversize. I have read about the effect many times, but this was the first time I actually saw it happening. What a fantastic demonstration.

I'm fond of the fluted knob too. Never done the trick with the contrasting pins though. It looks very posh! I think I may try it with an ali knob and brass pins. (great camera work and editing on this vid too BTW)
@oxtoolco6 жыл бұрын
Missed a trick. Afterwards I thought of black delrin pins for a super slick contrast with the brass. Oh well next time.
@Ropetangler6 жыл бұрын
Black delrin may look good at first, but black chrome would look better for longer, and should be right up your alley Tom. Is Ernie your Australian Cattle dog Tom, (I have one of your books which listed one such dog as one of your best mates) because I am fortunate to have an 18 month Red Cattle dog, who has replaced a very much loved Lab x Kelpie we lost 2 1/2 years ago. Thanks for all your work that you share with us, it is greatly appreciated, Rob.
@rockwell65946 жыл бұрын
Defunct gas struts could be a source of some black chromed round material. I have couple with 6mm dia black chrome rods in my "things that might come in handy" store. However the cut ends of the rod would not be black so it would be a bit visually messy. Great knob Tom. Cheers.

Nothing looks quite like a mix of brass and steel though. A little steam Punk goes a long way. I'm quite partial to a bit of draw-filing and a little blueing or blacking has a place too. My uncle Bob is a master at striking the balance so things look classy and not like a fairground attraction (which was a shame in the case of the ferris wheel). I've always wished I had a fancy fluted knob, wife says forget that, it's size that really matters.

I like the knob! Did you use any locktite on the stainless steel pins, or was that just a press fit! Always enjoy your videos.
@deeremeyer17496 жыл бұрын
If the pins are loose enough to need "locktite" it isn't going to cure anyway. Its an anaerobic thread "sealer" and cures in the ABSENCE of oxygen. And stainless steel and brass and a little perspiration from handling will have those pins "locked" into that knob just fine all by themselves.
@jefferdman59216 жыл бұрын
Thanks!
