We did the same. Train to DC, back with Flix. Was a great experience! But, in our case, we had a terrible bus + driver. Bad luck, i guess 😁. That was a really a hard test of my Flix-love.

I have booked online from NYC to DC in November, I don't see any seat no. on the ticket. Are they free seating on the Amtrack coach class or you can reserve seat before boarding the train. Do you have to show your online reservation ticket to the attendant before boading or you can just go ahead and board the train without checking in. Thanks

Hi, on some Amtrak lines there are assigned seating but generally on Amtrak Northeast (which you will be riding) they usually only have assigned seating for Acela and Business class tickets. If you have a coach class ticket you can sit in an open coach class seat (we enjoy the quiet car if available). And no you don’t need to show the ticket before boarding, a conductor will come around while the train is en route to check your tickets (either paper or online tickets) I hope this helps, Safe Travels!

Yeah the train is usually faster but if your budget is tight and you're booking last minute the bus might just work out better, Thanks for the comment

One week in advance is hardly last minute. How much would a walk-up fare on the day be? I'm from the UK. Until Covid I used to travel between London and Bradford in Yorkshire a couple of times each year, I think it's about 350 km. I've done it both ways; the coach (bus) takes about five hours and the train, not a particularly fast one, about three. for this reason I have tendd to use the train in more recent years due to bad legs. American trains do seem to be unreasonably slow, I think Amtrak need to try to get their speeds up on the slower sections.

Thanks for your comments. We used this for the casual traveler, if you travel this route often you usually obtain a rail pass (which would be at a different price point). If booking for same day travel on for this route, if available, general $82-$185, One week out $82-$138. I would defiantly go with the train if comfort is your main priority and yes, I agree the train system in the States when compared to many countries around the world is not very efficient or cost effective. Safe Travels!

You took the bus on a Sunday so traffic wouldn't be an issue. You should compare apples to apples and take into account bus traffic during rush hour like Friday afternoon

Thank you for your input, it is appreciated. Sundays during the summer are notoriously known as bad traffic days as people are returning from the beach or traveling for the weekend. I have driven into the city on many weekends and we always try to avoid Sundays after 4pm. Also the bus and train company’s take into consideration the day, time and traffic when giving their estimates on route times. So basically we based our results on the schedules provided by each. Safe Travels!

Hello Thank you for your input, the train for the most part will be a quicker ride but as I mentioned in the video you also have to take into consideration your schedule, the time and day you want to travel and of course your budget. Safe Travels.
