Agree with you on declaring your items. I keep a list of everything I purchase, not only lux goods, with the receipts, When I've gone through customs, I have also found them to be amazed at my thoroughness, and charge me far less than what they should.

Another thing I’ve done is put the checked bag with your clothing inside a larger empty checked bag! So you are only checking one bag going there and you end up with an empty full size bag when you get to your destination. I did this to get my kid from college who needed another suitcase and I didn’t want to pay for an empty large bag.

This was super helpful. I do have a question with regards to like time needed to declare. How long did it take and how would you manage things like previously purchased? Like separate from your already owned Birkin but if I returned with like a wallet in my purse that is designer and clearly designer like how would you handle like not being dinged for that since it wasn’t a purchase? Hi! Time-wise, I’d give it an extra hour to get the VAT refund . It’s a manual process when it’s over a certain price threshold so bags are often flagged. You have to line up and the officer will sometimes ask you to open your suitcase and even the boxes to inspect the item. If it’s peak season you might even want to give yourself a bit more time just to be safe. In terms of declaring when you return that can be as quick as 15 minutes I’ve found. The officer has you itemize the list of goods you bought and cross checks your suitcase. If they find additional designer they may ask you about it. I’ve never had an issue with this, I just say this is from home… If you’re concerned though, it’s good to have access to old receipts or old photos of the item that prove it wasn’t bought recently overseas. If you’re being honest at the forefront, they’re pretty casual about the process.

Thank you 🖤 no mailing necessary for any of my VAT forms. Most of mine were over the threshold so couldn't do it via the electronic kiosk so the officer had to check them manually at the airport, but that was it... afterwards, everything got refunded directly on our credit cards

I think I only carried my receipt for my Birkin when I bought it since I already had it on me. Now If I travel with it, I have my receipts on my phone so I can always show it but I didn’t need to during my last Paris trip. You should always have your receipt in your phone just in case (in my opinion) just to show proof that it’s an older purchase

I was wondering when he said if he finds Cartier Jewelry in your bag whats gonna happen? Like if you have a 5 year old Cartier bracelet not a recent purchase in that bag is he gonna tax you 5k ?

I think he meant if he found a brand new Cartier bracelet with the box and receipt, he would give me a penalty fee. If you have an old bracelet, i feel like there are signs that it’s not new, so I wouldn’t be worried or you can show an old photo like I did to show that you’ve had it for a while. Hope this helps!
