I've owned a couple of E-bkes, a Radcity from Rad Power Bikes and An Aventon Abound Cargo bike. The Abound is by and far my favorite to ride. Although within the first 40 miles of riding it our control board died, it took them over a month to get us a new control board. Then there was no documentation on how to replace it and the document they sent me just showed out to remove the battery. Also getting the new board in is more difficult than extracting the old one. Turns out the solder joints were just awful. Im still recovering from foot surgery and my Abound is helping me still get out and ride before I clip back into my recumbent trike. Which trying to wear my cycling shoes causes me a lot of pain, so riding my trike is out of the question for now and that hurts me emotionally. What I want to know is just how serviceable is that unicycle? Is it easy to replace the battery or replace parts? What is the average length of time before something fails? We've seen with the one wheel, there is drm with their batteries and only they can do it. Which is just stupid. I'm a strong believer in right to repair and I want to repair my electronics.

Let me throw this out there. It will be longwinded. I am a "Car Guy." I really like cars, I own three, one of which is a project car. I have totally rebuilt the suspension on it (as well as upgraded it), as well as done numerous maintenance things (wheel bearings, replaced fluids, etc) and am currently in the process of rebuilding the engine. I just dropped the Cylinder Heads off at a machine shop the other day to get them magnafluxed and milled. I love road trips, I love taking my project car offroading (when it works) and driving is kind of a zen experience for me. That said? Yeah, cars are tedious. I hate that I have to get in my car just to go the grocery store, which would be less than a 10-minute ride on my bike; but I need to use the car because A) Someone will steal my bike B) There are no bike lanes or even sidewalks (which I'd prefer not to ride on) to ride on. C) I've already nearly been hit several times on my bike in slip lanes even when I have a trailer with my kids in it, with a large "Caution" flag on it. People drive like damned maniacs and even in my relatively quiet neighborhood, people speed through it, run the few stop signs we have and more than once I've been crossing the street with my children only to have people blow through the sign because they can't be bothered to wait the additional 10-seconds it takes us to get through the crosswalk. I still like cars and the experience they can provide, but I absolutely HATE that we are completely reliant on them for everything and that we just pass out drivers licenses to anyone, as well as build our cities and suburbs completely around them and what is the easiest thing for a car to navigate. It's frustrating, especially when you've been to cities which have walkable infrastructure and excellent public transportation that is cheap and fast. We don't have to live this way. This isn't to even mention all the shit that comes along with cars. Just last year I did the water pump on my van, which was pain in the ass and now the coolant is leaking elsewhere, so I need to fix that. I also need to take my 5-gallon bottle full of used oil over to the auto parts store to dump it, as well as have shelves and shelves full of fluid and various other car parts I've either removed or am rebuilding in some form or another. Again, I like cars, but god they are a pain in the ass and what else could I be doing with my time if I didn't need to be driving everywhere and repairing or maintaining them. Luckily I'm mechanically inclined so that at least it's fun for me and cheap, but still it costs money and time I could be spending doing other stuff. Anyway, sorry this turned into a rant, but you struck a chord.

I get it, skill and luck as helped me avoid more stupid drivers than I care to admit. I see plenty of people running stop signs or at least rolling through them. Even still I prefer to ride one of my velocipedes over taking a vehicle. HEB is very friendly to cyclists, the bike rack is right next to the front doors too. Just about anywhere in town I need to go is less than five miles. I also understand not everyone has the same fitness level I do and it's more difficult to escape the gravitational pull of the couch.

@@SpikeTheWolf yeah I didn't get that from his comment. He's talking about the expensive nature of cars, the poor training of motorists, and the lack of proper infrastructure to support walking and biking. The cost of EV's takes the cost of a car and turns that up to 11. Just about everything about an EV is stupid expensive. Heck even e-bikes/trikes is expensive. Most battery packs are at least $500 to replace on a e-bike/trike and an ev car/truck is at least 20x that. Then you have the DRM they bake into things like EV's and smaller personal transportation like a one wheel where they make you send it back to them. There are a lot of true expenses that people don't consider when buying anything electric.

10:05 Yes, Izzy. But you could just ride a regular bicycle, maybe a folding bicycle. No batteries and no guilt. NPR covered a story today - "A substantial body of evidence supports the health benefits of cycling, everything from strengthening the immune system to boosting the likelihood of living longer. Now, a new study finds people who are in the habit of riding a bike are significantly less likely to have osteoarthritis and experience pain in their knees by age 65, compared to people who don't bike."

E bikes solve about lity problem in a way that regular bikes do not. The ideal is an e bike that you can use with or without the battery engaged. Weather changes, distance is limited, climbing hills is hard etcetera.
