@@ghostwalker5644 _"Secular" translates as "Non- Believer"._ I don't agree, it's not the way I understand the word. Though I don't know whether Oren means it that way or not. I'd say a secular guy is someone who is not particularly religious. (S)he might still believe in God but without 24/7 considering religion, and without dismissing scientific findings just because the scripture seems to say otherwise. In this sense I'd call myself a secular Christian.

One of the behaviors we noticed among the Israelis with whom we came into contact was a different understanding of queing. We’d stand in a line waiting for our turn to say wait to get on a bus or order food, and others got in the ahead of us making us have to wait longer. That’s considered unacceptable in polite U.S. society.

My opinion is that the whole world needs a LOT of the Shabbat concept, and the coming together of the family is fabulous! When I was in Jerusalem, it was an amazing experience to see so many people scurrying around in the late afternoon hours wherever they were. When I asked about this, I was told that they all had to hurry to get home before sunset so they could be in time to start their Shabbat times at home. What a wonderful idea! I don't know your name but you do an excellent job of describing Israel and its culture. I first went as a volunteer in 1970, first to Kabri and then ulpan at Mishmar Ha'Emek. After that down to Eilat to earn money to get back home. Israel then you could hitchhike, a falafel was less than a shekel and Goldstar was the beer of choice . Nesher was cheaper and Maccabee was for the rich! I loved the country, all the various cultures, the wonderful hospitality of the Sephardim, the gruffness of the Ashkenazim. I also liked Arik Einstein - and Ariel Zilber's "Rutzi Shmulik"? Then there was HaBrerah HaTevaeet and Morrocan Wedding. There was an IDF comedy show with a character called "Corimli Helicoptair". I loved kibbutz life and totally agree about the Socialism thing. I was pretty sad when that came to an end. Spent another three years there later on, and had a few trips back since. As an Englishman I'd say you are a mighty fine tour guide and typical "tell it as it is" Israeli.. ps. I spent most of my time in the North and the South. I love the desert also. She and her husband threw a big party and the whole lab was invited. And there I was sitting next to my boss and another graduate student, all three of us wearing the same uniform: blue T-Shirt, sand-coloured Shorts and Tewa sandals. I think this was my most Israeli moment ever and it sums up so many things about Israeli society. So maybe, you should add Tewa Sandals to your list. 😀

I would definitely add Zohar Argov and Eyal Golan, the greatest Mizrahi (Middle Eastern style music in Hebrew - the most popular genre in Israel) singers of the country, and "Hafla", kind of a karaoke-party, where they sing Mizrahi songs (often while barbequing or eating other food and smoking hookah). the Hafla is usually taking place in private yards.

Great video. Shimon Peres was far too left for me but he certainly had a very accomplished life.

Chutzpah is definitely missing from this list. Really appreciated the history lesson on the Kibbutzim, a very successful experiment in the story of the country.

Plus schwarma (lamb cut from a rotating spike) , pitta, chips and choice of a dozen different salads eaten outside in the town square, all for such a modest cost. This is where the families go for a treat. If only the rest of the world would copy this !
