The neon glow reflected on wet streets in 50s London is beautiful .

Fascinating to see these old London street scenes, truly a trip back in time to a gentler - and, may I say it - a more civilised era. Does anyone know if these 'back plate' films were made to be used as back projection scenes in movies, particularly when the 'action' takes place in what is meant to be a moving car?

Would guess about 1958, on the basis that I didn’t spot any Minis.

March 22nd to May 2nd 1956 was when the film Alexander The Great (2:50) ran at The Odeon. See it clearer here kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWiUhoJ8nbGGbrs

@@michaelkenny8540 I certainly wouldn’t disagree with that. Thanks.

Wonderful stuff! Classic cars and vans with the added appearances of London Transport buses at their best, in this case, vehicles of the RT family. Must have been either in the fifties or very early sixties.

+Christopher Dalton - hi Christopher - I checked on the dates of this footage for you. I've added some extra shot-listing information. Some of the shots are from 1956, others from 1958. Best wishes - Jenny @ Movietone

Aah! - The austere 1950's; when almost all British cars were either black, grey or beige: i.e. Austerity colours. Have you noticed how car-colour history closely repeated itself during the last recession. Must be a conspiracy.

That's a very interesting thought .

Agree about the monochrome colour palette, except that black seems to have been replaced by white/silver/grey.
