TRAVELLING DURING A PANDEMIC.. is it a good idea? Plus, how to make a fly screen for a van!
When can we travel???
This week we think about if we should really consider travelling in our self converted van whilst the pandemic is ongoing. Whilst we live in the UK where the numbers are still quite high, we may well be safer abroad! However, we have to consider how this affects our insurances and what we would actually be covered for if the situation gets worse or if there is a second peak. Couple that with the additional challenges of travelling with pets and the unknown implications of brexit we ponder whether travelling internationally right now is worth it and when we can realistically travel again.
Also or a far more light hearted note, Emily makes some homemade diy fly screens/nets for the doors of our campervan, which will hopefully make vanlife uk or vanlife europe more comfortable on those hotter days whenever we can eventually get on the road!! Because of the pandemic we are having to keep our van conversion ideas cheap!

Emily's expressions are priceless! You are lucky to have her, Lou. No teams Emily or Lou, love you both. We are almost desperate for a trip to Folkestone/Dover for essentials; baked beans, bacon, brown sauce etc, but the tunnel and ferries have put up their prices for short stay crossings. We went up to Calais yesterday to see friends and the A16 was full of Brit campervans heading south, so come on over. Just a couple of bits of advice that you may not know ... When you come to a stop sign you must actually stop, even if nothing is coming, the gendarmes will fine on the spot if they see you creeping over a stop junction. One more thing, in towns and villages, especially in the north of France, Priorite a droite (give way to the right) is still a thing and believe me, it will be a shock when a French vehicle shoots out in front of you knowing he/she has the right of way. Bloody hell, did I just write all that? lol, Have a great trip next week xx

Wales opens to self contained Vans from 11th July, your welcome to visit from then however I can imagine it’ll be very busy during the first few weeks. I welcome Wales and Scotland cautious approach, we were generally 2 weeks behind England with regard to Covid so the fall in the R Rating was always going to be a couple of weeks behind, the same applies to Scotland. Hey, I love your channel and subscribed to it immediately after stumbling over it a few weeks ago. I have a dog and 2 cats myself and plan to convert a panel van, though won’t do long term traveling, at least not as long as my kitties are alive. Just one question, how is Summer traveling? You would have to crate her while driving, at least in most of Europe. My cats would hate that. The same applies to your dog of course but there it’s possible to secure him with a safety belt that’s safely connecting to a fixture. With a kitty that doesn’t work. If I knew a way around this I might change my plans as well. 😅 Have a lot of fun traveling and seeing the world, I wish you all the best!

Hi there, firstly thank you for following our channel, it means a lot 😁😁 Our cat travels quite well, she's only really just starting to go on longer trips, she has a travel harness and we have a fixing point for it at the back of the van, by the bed. 😂🤣 Yeh that extra 15 quid paid dividends lol! We don't have velcro ones Emily stitched magnets in the net so it just sticks to the metal. It was invaluable in Spain as there were a lot of flies, although I think she's gonna make another one for the nest trip that's a slightly better fit. Hope that helps.

After the rabies blood test you have to wait 3m before you can travel on the proposed new rules. Blooming Schengun 90 day in and 90 day out proposals are a pain too. We travel with Henry hound. Had to cancel Euro trip due to health issues so feel your pain. Hours on phone to insurer, paid for doctors to sign forms only to find no pandemic cover. Joy. Heyho we're alive & kicking.

Hi Andrew, I've seen that too. The thing is I don't want to add any thermal bridging by going straight into the metal where I can avoid it. I've seen some that screw in, so could be fixed in place if tou had wood around the door. Plus we have to take ours down when not needed otherwise it gets completely covered in our white dogs hairs lol 😁😁

Hi, it's a bit of a tricky question as we are keeping our house for a while so our total savings include that too. But we are estimating approx £1000 a month for our fuel/food/insurances and activities. Hope that helps answer your question.

We'd love to get over to Devon and Cornwall this year, we actually used to live in Cornwall. According to the media though everything is all booked up and the locals don't want us there either, maybe we will wait and see how it all plays out and hopefully get down there. Always happy to meet up 😁

Help! We are trying to make a similar screen to yours for our van, but are struggling with the magnets. Emily, how did you attach the magnets to the fabric?

Hi ya, along the edge there is already some magnets, I made a little slit in that and pushed the magnets through and then put a few stitches in where I wanted them to stay in place. Hope that makes sense 🤔

Hi Emily and Louise. Could you please share how much is your current (approx) van insurance and what company did you choose? Our van is not yet a final conversion to satisfy DVLA requirements but we still want to insure it to drive.

Hi there. We have our van insured as a campervan under conversion, you don't need to have it reclassified as a motorhome to be able to insure it, just make sure the insurance company knows what you're doing and will insure it as such. Adrian flux and Brentacre are good ones that know all about self builds, you could speak to them. Our insurance is around £600 for both of us.

Hi seb, I won't say on here who we are with, else I'll be getting false claims lol! But try Adrian flux or Brentacre, they're usually pretty good and will do campervan under conversion insurance.

I used to be with Adrian Flux for the motorhome - but never heard of Bentacre. Thank you - very useful! As to false claims, anybody can find out what insurance company another vehicle is insured with using the askMID Road Side service - apparently free on mobile devices - otherwise £4.50 per enquiry it seems.

You might already know this but make sure you have your European health insurance card (EICC) it's free so avoid the scam websites that ask you for money. Even though with brexit you can still get the card. I think it'll be difficult to get travel insurance but at least if you fall ill or anything you won't have to pay in EU countries! #TeamEmily :P

Thanks leanne, apparently they are taking up to 3 months to come through and the website has been down, hopefully it will be fixed soon. I'm not sure how that'll work after brexit tho, hoping for some facts to come from the government soon but I very much doubt it lol! 😂 We will definitely be applying for one tho cos at least it will cover us until December. Oh, and Emily said thankyou, I'm offended tho lol! 😂👍
