The ILOILO DINAGYANG FESTIVAL was created in 1968 (editing 1976) by the AUGUSTIAN FATHERS in tandem with the ILOILO CITY GOVERNMENT. Cebu City saw that ILOILO CITY was very very successful in this festival, they also decided to create the SINULOG Festival in 1984 as a response to Iloilo's success. They based it on the old women's dance, those old women who dance for a fee if they light your candle in front of the Magellan's Cross. Now, some people in Cebu have the shameless nerve to tell the world they are older than the ILOILO DINAGYANG, and are telling the world there is only one big festival, the Sinulog. Shameful they. Some of these diehard people have no respect for ILOILO, considering that this Sinulog festival was only created as a response to the immense success of the ILOILO DINAGYANG FESTIVAL.

I think Dinagyang is more than 50 years old, so it's not in 1976, I remember they already celebrated their 50th year in 2018.

Correction: 1968 It was started yes by the Augustian Friars. 1974 the City Government took over as they saw it as an attraction and a tourism product which gains attention and attracts both tourists and investors. Dinagyang won as Champion a total 8 victories ( 2004, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2017, 2023 and 2024 in Aliwan Festival)

Thanks Mr. Suñe for that very definitive fact check on the origins of Dinagyang and how much older it is than sinulog and how Cebu just copied what Iloilo started.

Can we agree that the drummers and those playing the instruments are the ones in control of the vibe, the dinagyang beat. I miss going to the city during these events I lost interest since I graduated college 😂😂😂 I mean I can walk from home to downtown to experience dinagyang but as I grow older I become more uninterested but who knows maybe next year

Just would like to add that the ending part where the tribes are dancing are not the actual competition, it's a parade or "sadsad" as we call it. They're on their way to one of the judging areas (the actual competition) as the lady in the eatery explained. The tribes don't only perform once, they perform 4 times in different judging areas unlike other festivals in the Philippines where there is only 1 staging area. This is what we call a "Carousel" performance, and it happens simultaneously, 1 tribe performs on one of the judging areas, the same time as 3 different tribe performs on other 3 judging areas and then after performing, they carry all their costumes and props on the road on the way to the next judging area and perform again. It's a very exhausting competition for the participants but you won't feel it because once they perform it's like it's their first performance, the energy is unmatched. Hoping you can secure tickets next year if ever you decide to come again. Thank you for coming to my city, hope you enjoyed your stay! :)
@TravelLordOnLoc8 күн бұрын
Yeah I was bummed out that I was so far from the competition because the performers, planners and musicians put a lot of work into it. Next time I will definitely get a ticket ahead of time!

Hey! Thank you for featuring our city! There’s a parade route posted online where you can see where the Tribes will be going from one performance area to another. People usually line these streets to see the street dance. I think you were mostly at the back streets. :( where you got face painted on Saturday was where you should have been for sunday.

The 8 Dinagyang tribes who participated were world-class and impressive, and only one was declared to be the best of the best. Their performances can compete with those of "Ka" by Circus de Soleil in Las Vegas. The level of enthusiasm, choreography, costumes, and drumming were awe-inspiring. If they were brought to Vegas, I think they would be able to compete with any Vegas shows.

And the tribe competition (4th sunday of january) is just school districts inside the city of Iloilo.
