We was pleasantly surprised with our most recent pre flight stay at Birmingham airport Travelodge where we stayed for £67.99 in our opinion the best hotel to stay at on the day. Recently refurbished the darker colours offer a less budget feel and the bar and restaurant now a welcoming space rather than a close relation to a school canteen.
The hotel offers a bar, restaurant and vending machines in the communal area and lift access to all floors. Sadly until our most recent visit I've never had great experiences with the food and have waited at times well over an hour for cold under cooked food. The bar prices have always been very reasonable and it's location always appealing.
You can stay closer to the terminal including at the Hilton and Ibis hotels. I have never stayed at the Hilton and always found it stupidly over priced sometimes around £200 a night but without facilities such as a pool that I'd expect for that. The Ibis on the other hand are ok they do the job but tend to be more expensive than the Travelodge but are in a more convenient location
Another option might be the Holiday Inn. We have used both the Holiday Inn next to the Travelodge equipped with swimming pool and health club as well as the more Budget holiday Inn express which includes a breakfast with the price. Along with the Travelodge both Holiday Inn's require a transfer of some kind to reach the terminal but are slightly more refined and if you are part of the IHG reward scheme give you a chance to earn points and benefits such as a welcome drink on the house! The option for a swimming pool is also appealing but I'd always say to weigh up if you are going to have time to use it.
We worked our way quite high up in the IHG reward scheme and it would always been my hotel brand by choice. That said I am really glad we returned to the Travelodge on our most recent visit to Birmingham airport.
The hotel has a whole fresh feel and offers a good selection of food. We both went for burgers and sides along with a cheeky glass of wine. It was served quick hot and fresh. That said the chips there still could do with longer in the oven; it loses 1 point here! To get to the rooms you need to insert your key card to get to the lifts and stairs make sure you keep it away from your phone. The top floor is now there plus rooms. We have stayed in one of these earlier this year in Liverpool which includes a coffee machine, snacks and WiFi. Ultimately there are the same rooms just with a few extras If you will use them it's worth the little bit extra!
This visit we just had a basic room. The room smelt fresh and was welcoming the darker colours work well. There is good sound proofing but you will need it as you will have the busy A45 one side and the runway the other. No air conditioning is available so beware of the sounds if you open the window. The bed was very comfortable and we had a good night sleep. The only negatives with the room are 1. the TV is now very small for the room but it does do the job. -1 point. 2. My only real major issue is the clinggy shower curtain that smells. It's such a shame that this hasn't been addressed in the refurb but in all honesty the bathroom hasn't been touched at all. Sadly the smell and an old fashioned shower curtain let it down. -1 point.
In the morning we was too early for breakfast but ate in the airport. We travelled by shuttle bus to the terminal but note now there is a sign saying you shouldn't do this. As an alternative you can get a taxi or catch the regular X1/X12 local bus for more details visit www.nxbus.co.uk
We paid £67.99 the food and drink come in around £30 so I feel this on the day was the best value for money. I'd now recommend the hotel to anyone it's a great option and is a great way to start your holiday. The cheapest option on the day was the nearby Sheldon Travelodge that has also been refurbished. But for the sake of £3 we chose the onsite Travelodge.
Our stay Thursday night in October 2024 & we score it 7/10
