While the train was invented in the UK, the trains recently...haven't been that great. However with LNER taking over from Virgin, there's now a brand new high speed train on the famous Flying Scotsman route. What's it like in First Class and Standard Class? Is First Class worth it? Let's find out on this trip from London King's Cross to Newcastle, then from Edinburgh Waverley to Inverness.
I paid £84.50 for the 1st class ticket from London to Newcastle and £16.00 in Standard from Edinburgh to Inverness.

British Rail Enthusiast (and fan of your channel) here, and for someone who does predominantly flight reviews, this video was really amazing. I went on LNER’s Azuma service between Berwick and Edinburgh a few months back when I was staying over at Lindesfarne (which I saw you went to), which was an alright experience in standard class. To also note that you took the effort to go and visit the different areas of the Northumberland/Scottish Borders coast, I really enjoyed that. For the most part, many trip report channels don’t even show anything about where they go, and it’s really refreshing to see someone show footage from where they’ve been during ‘transfers’. Amazing video!

The food issues have to do with the supply chain issues. Since the ingredients used are fresh, and have to travel from the farms near central England down to London. You have to try and get on one of LNER's older trains, the IC 225 which runs between London and York/Leeds pictured at 2:08. Great job! The best train to ever grace the UK rails was the Intercity 125, the fastest diesel train in the world! They were superb! The azumas had to replace them because the 125s had toilets that dumped onto the tracks, and had manual carriage doors instead of electric. The last of the "old school" 125s were withdrawn last year. These trains are still used in Scotland and Cornwall, as well as some cross country routs. The remaining units have been brought up to modern standards and are still brilliant.

Great review. Just to say that LNER introduced a new first class menu on January 1. Also note that Cal Sleeper will be nationalised by the Scottish Government in the next few months. It is unclear how this will affect its onboard product ot the ticket prices.

The Azuma is the worst long distance train in the UK. I have only ever travelled in First Class and that is bad enough, dread to think what Standard is like!

you haven't tried GWRs with the German comuter seat in it for economy class. The !st class seats aren't much better

Well done and you never mentioned how tiny our trains are compared to many other parts of the world. Have you compared our rail fares with other countries as many Brits find most tickets very expensive and for occasional passengers the restrictions and pricing system is difficult to understand.

What about doing Lumo Class 803 IET. And also do Hull Trains Class 802 Paragon, GWR Class 800 and Class 802 IETs and Transpennine Express Class 802 Nova 1.

If you want a decent high-speed train in the UK, I would suggest Avanti West Coast's Class 390, they tilt and make the run up to Glasgow

I was looking at those, are they faster than LNER on that route? I also know they use a different station. Really only ever done the eastern routes.

@@Travelog I haven't done London to Edinburgh via the West Coast Mainline I have done Preston to Glasgow which is about 2hrs

BTW Scotland has zero tolerance on drink driving , you cant have any alcohol in your system for driving

Scotland is 50mg/100ml whereas England and Wales is 80mg/100ml although advisable if you are driving then not to drink

Britain is funny in that it uses metric for some things and imperial for others. Speed and Distance in is measured in miles per hour. Half way between America and the rest of the world lol

No, we use miles for long distances and metres for short distances.
