Angkor Wat was an incredible adventure, but incredibly crowded. Have you visited and have tips on how to beat the crowds? I try my hardest not to butcher all the Khmer names!

That’s only partly true, I’ve been to the temples dozens of times from 2002-2020 And there are only 4 temples that are ever crowded... Angkor Wat Bayon Ta Phrom Banteay Srei The other dozen or so main temples you will visit are never overcrowded

Saying there are 1000 temples is very misleading as many would only be foundations and you would never visit anywhere near that number and some are well away from Siem Reap and into Thailand From Siem Reap there are only about 25 sites and some of those you would never be bothered seeing as they are so small.of the main sites to see There are temples, gates, terraces, walls and towers. The area is too big to see in one day and because of the hot weather morning visits are best so I suggest buying a 3 day ticket much better value than the one day ticket.I’m an artist and I do many drawings there so I always buy a 7 day ticket @$72 , that’s really good value at only $7.20 a visit.

Yeah I get ya! I was only there for 2 days, and agree with you on the heat. On the 1000 temples you are right of course, that's just how they market it and technically a few ruined rocks count as one.

@Gary Roberts Good info! I am an artist too, and its a dream of mine to visit the Angkor temples and draw many of them! Could you tell me a bit about your experience with drawing them? Did you spend a long time at each temple? Was it very busy after midday? Did you get any time alone, or did people come up to you a lot to watch you draw?

@@Glaiceana well it’s very hot...don’t come in March, April or May, too hot sitting at the temples sketching...then it gets wet until October but usually only rains for a short time each day so you could come in those months..temples are busy November - February as it’s the coolest time but some temples are never that busy apart from the big 3...Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Phrom Bring a wet hand towel in a plastic bag to wipe your face down..a wet towel is your best friend. Might help to bring one of those neck cushions to sit on, the stone can get very hard If you want to do some serious sketching get a 7 day pass. People do watch and some talk to you but it’s nice and doesn’t happen that much. In some places you’ll have monkeys join you Which is really nice. Bring different size paper , I did some sketches on large paper that were my best . Visit Banteay Samre , great to sketch there and quiet ...the other best for sketching are Phear Khan, (Thommanom & the small temple opposite) Bayon, Ta Phrom...and if you want to travel further afield (in a Tuk tuk is fine), Beng Mealea. The 2 Roulous temples on the right hand side of Highway 6 are worth sketching too. Banteay Srei is very detailed but small and usually crowded, well worth a look but not easy to sketch unless you sit across from the moat Small details are great to sketch as well as sections of temples.

@@Glaiceana some of my big sketches I’d come back for a second day. I only drew in the morning, I’d stay for 4 hours , that was enough , back to Siem Reap for lunch, lunches are more expensive at the temples. Plenty of times I was drawing alone in some remote spot I’d find. Mostly I’d use a black fineliner but did some in blue and brown and pencil even coloured pencil ... I’d add watercolour back in my room to some of the sketches
