Being many years senior to you I speaking with some authority on this one. Just because of so much experience I will tell you, "own it, admit it as you've done and then get over it". After all no one was hurt or injured and most importantly you're still a pretty amazing guy which we all enjoy. I seldom try to do it your way (for example free handing circular saw cuts that you do) but am amazed at what you create with so little. Are you God, no but still very worth watching!

Being foolish and not admitting it is a problem. But that does not apply to you Peter! We all make mistakes, but admitting it, taking ownership and moving on is the proper way. Cheers! Now on to the next boat repair challenge.

Too many years ago when I was 16 (now74) I worked on Saturdays with a mobile mechanic. One day when he dropped me at home my neighbour came across the road saying that he had recently bought a Standard 10 (an old car even then). It apparently went bang and lost drive. Mechanic, Peter, said yes they had a tendency to break drive shafts. He also commented that owners in the know often carried a spare under the back seat. We chatted for a few minutes after the neighbour left but were interrupted by him hop, skip & jumping across the road carrying a nice new halfshaft wrapped in oilcloth.

Ha, great story. When I drove Land Rovers with standard differentials they regularly snapped halfshafts. And I carried spares. Now I'll carry flanges.

I think you lucked out here Peter . 👍 Coming to the wrong automotive conclusion happens to all of us . I know i destroyed a brand new cylinder head of a six pot VW diesel engine . Wont bother you with how . So we learn every day . And now you have had your learning moment . Your honesty in this makes you a better human , you could have hidden this . But you didn't and that is a compliment to you . Okay , that's enough i think 😂 Now go on and repair that poor Landy !

Nothing wrong with a celebratory ginger beer at 11:01 if you’ve finally diagnosed a nagging issue! I will join you. The best part of the error is, making a mistake on a Land Rover is less of a deal, because Land Rovers can’t sink. At least it wasn’t a fatal error! I love your truck, and am extremely jealous of it. The same goes for M.V. Geordie, and especially Poem! I am reasonably jealous of M.V. Zephrys, but that’s not your vessel so I won’t bother you with that. We love your content, Peter, no matter where you are or what problem you are solving. Thanks for taking us on your journey!

Experience is a wonderful thing. It allows us to identify a mistake when we make it again. If that is foolish then so be it. The really foolish thing would have been to go and spend major $$ on a new rear end only to find the issue with the drive shaft. Here’s to the win!

I too have been foolish recently. My cars starter motor stopped working, so I had to push start it for a few weeks, and I went and bought a new starter and some ramps and jack stands to get it in the air, after crawling under the car with spanners to take it off and put the new one on, I saw it was just 2 loose bolts that hold the starter to the fly wheel. But there was no grinding sound, it was "dead", it just clicked when you tried to start it, and the starter was up between the motor and firewall so you couldnt really check it with out getting it off the ground. On the upside, I now have a spare starter motor and some ramps & stands.

A few years ago I swore that I had blown a transmission ( 4 speed 4x4 ). The noise was bad, and under my feet. I took the transmission out and found a blown clutch. The torque springs had blown away from the clutch disk and put holes in the bellhousing. Put the new clutch in and took it for a test drive. BANG BANG again under my feet. The rear differential was blown, ( was all along ) and the noise was just transferring up the shaft and sounded like the transmission. The blown clutch was not the noise issue. It was caused by the abrupt clashing of the rear end while clutch was engaged. You just never know. Sometimes you get humbled.

I have a typically robust & reliable e30 BMW. It’s a modern car in the sense that it’s fuel injected & emissions controlled, etc, but still simple enough that one so inclined can quickly know the car & easily maintain it. I took that car to my aunt’s place a few years back, around 45 miles away - ran some errands with her, took her out to dinner, etc. When I took her home I went in for the inevitable last minute stuff, & then the car wouldn’t start - seriously, the uber reliable _e30_ just sat there cranking & not firing. It was dark by then, but I wasn’t planning to spend the night so I troubleshot until I had to give up & spend the night. First thing in the morning, back at it until I decided I needed the manual & more tools, so I borrowed my aunt’s car & did the 90 mile round trip for tools that I really didn’t have a plan for because nothing was making any sense. I could tell that it wasn’t getting fuel & the pump was OEM, so I bought one on my way back to the car. Much more trouble shooting, & I kept winding up back at the fuse block but fuses were testing fine. I pulled the old pump back out, planning to replace it but took the additional step of wiring it direct to power, & it tested fine. I confirmed flow to the engine, etc, & _finally_ just swapped the fuel pump fuse for a fresh one & the car fired right up. I’m abridging several hours of testing & retesting that circuit without any _hint_ of a solution, & haven’t yet mentioned that I’d already touched base with a flatbed operator ‘cause come hell or high water, the car & I were going home. I’d also reached out to a couple of buddies for ideas, so of course I had to fess up to being punked by a fuse. At this point it’s clear that I’ll _never_ live it down, _nor should I,_ right? It happens. When it does we stand straight & tall & ignore the pointing & laughing, for their turns will come as well. 🤘

Since you said you have a transmission with brass synchros, make sure you do not use any GL5 rated lube, regular or synthetic. This is the most common rating and it will drastically shorten the life of your synchros. I found this out the hard way after I replaced the synchros in my old car transmission three times before I found out the problem. You may already know this, but I didn’t and it cost me a lot of unnecessary work and wasted money. I used both regular and synthetic GL5 with the same bad results. Before the last rebuild I had been made aware of the issue and used Amsoil synthetic GL4. Over ten years now and no problems. The moral of the story is make sure you use nothing but GL4, not GL5 rated oil in that transmission.

I have not said a lot on the topic because A) I have little means, B) I have WAY less of an idea about cars than you do and C) I don't live on the same continent. So, there was no point in giving any input from my side. However, I am happy that the whole thing seems to be a fairly easy fix and I'm crossing all crossable fingers and toes that it is so! So, cheers from Scotch to Ginger Beer! Watching this with little knowledge About engines, gears and cars And observing the oil-spillage, Peter thinking he's a farce Let me tell you: that is not so! You're not foolish! I'd be worse! 'Cause your mind would overflow from Knowing what might go averse. Boats of wood, electrics, engines, Styles, designs and filming all, For all purpose and intentions You're juggling a lot of balls! Foolish would be, to insist on Knowing all you ever knew The same second you are quizzed on't, Having everything on cue. Taking time brought the solution Now you do what must be done. To err is human. To forgive..... My favorite saying though is " perfection is only a goal not a job requirement." Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Peter we all love you and certainly will forgive you. Now you only have to forgive yourself.

Don't feel bad, I once rebuilt the carburetor on my 73 Charger because it was running really rough. Turned out I was running out of gas and had made it home on vapours. No excuse that the calibration on gauge was off, shouldn't have run it down so close to the E line. 😪

This episode reminded me of an old VW Beetle and what I expensively thought was a bent half shaft. Not to mention the uncomfortable day in a borrowed barn replacing it. Turned out I had bent the cast iron brake drum which cost £7.50 from a local breakers and took half an hour to replace. Oh, and the dent I had to knock out of the wing after a minor tantrum with a large Stilson wrench I'd used to undo the lock nut....

It’s easy to misdiagnose. Don’t beat yourself up. That T-case is fine. The chewed up outer flange swarf you found is why I asked about that when you first told us of the problem. I suspect you’ll find you problems limited to that outer flange and you’ll be good to go. The milky oil is probably just due to condensation. However maybe check that the vent is in place.

May I humbly suggest the HD axle flanges! They are not harder material just bigger spline area. The harder chromoly ones I do not suggest as they are expensive and can harm the shafts themselves. Also screw off caps keep the dirt out better. Just my two cents.

Thanks, I've considered the shmancy flanges but feared they would eliminate the "fuse" function of the factory cheese flanges. I'll look into these, "somewhat" tougher flanges.
@SimonElenor
@SimonElenor Жыл бұрын
@@TravelsWithGeordie yeah I lile a cheap fuse. But the stock ones are just too weak! Its a Dana 60 after all and extremely steong exceptfor the flanges. Most of the time I have found its simply dirt rhat gets in and causes a grinding affect. So the newer ones help with that. Also use a smear of rtv on the gaskets. I use the black and never had a problem after with the HD flanges. I may be in TN USA but being English I have dealt with the Land Rovers alot.

Peter, you mentioned that the Rover was old technology, and that is true. I have it from a reliable source that the first design was to go to George III, that English King person, and would have been powered by a walking beam steam engine. The big clue on the repair was at the differential. It appears to be a Dana and they are good stuff. Good luck under there old man. Tonight may you dream of a Ford F150 or maybe a Silverado Z-71. 🤣🤣

Good job on the diagnosis of the truck. I too wake up in the middle of the night and think, why did I not check this or that on a problem I am working on and then can't wait for the morning to go check it out. I was wondering if there is a full floating flanged axle that would replace the spline drive flanges? As said before a foolish person would not admit a mistake or learn from it. Be safe but have fun see you next week. 🍻🛥🇺🇸

The spider gears in your rear end are gone. Those are the gears that transfer the ring gear to the axles. You will need new gears and bearings.
@TravelsWithGeordie
@TravelsWithGeordie Жыл бұрын
Why do you think they're gone?
@vincentdsnt
@vincentdsnt Жыл бұрын
Well I believe you showed metal in the rear end gear lube? The spider gears are in most cases the first parts of a rear set to grind away........They are the gears that engage the axles . They take a beating when the axles slip to when corning . They are not as hard as the ring and pinion so they go first, but when they turn your lube into metallic paste the bearings take a hit too. Carrier, axle,inside outside and pinion bearings will need to be inspected and or replaced. 50 years of experience in this field and I hope I am wrong but you need to do the job right the first time and be done. Good Luck and I do enjoy your willingness to tackle tough jobs....If I can help let me know. @@TravelsWithGeordie

Thanks for the explanation. Good point. The thing is, the filings in oil I showed was from the wheel hub drive flange. The splines on the half shaft chewed out the splines on the flange. Now I can't yet guarantee that the carrier gears are god. I'm pretty sure.
