Ok. This is the first time I have to disagree if you laurie. When I book my flights i pay extra to book the specific seat i want. I have my reasons to book that seat. I will never switch my seat unless I'm offered a better seat in my opinion, i.e. Business or first class to my economy seat. I planned ahead, i paid extra money, it's my seat.

I agree. I fly either cross country or internationally and pay extra for a specific seat. I think it’s extremely rude to expect someone to move or babysit your child because you didn’t plan ahead. I’ve been asked a few times to move to a middle seat in the back of the plane so they could have my aisle seat with extra room that I paid more for to sit with a friend or family member.

I didn’t hear anyone say that you’re obligated to switch. When someone asks you to swap to a middle seat so they can sit with their kid you can offer to ask the flight attendant to help move people around so you get an equivalent seat and two people sitting together switch to the same type of seats they already have. It’s not - pardon the pun - aeronautical engineering (ie rocket science).

If that adult didn't plan far enough ahead so that they could get two seats together with their child, then that's just too bad. I'm sick and tired of people bending over backwards for people with children who think that just because they have a child they can do whatever they want and people will cowtow to their demands. I'm sick and tired of all this belief of entitlement in the world. Take personal responsibility. You're no better than anyone else.

I remember my first flight as an eight year old with my grandparents. My grandmother and I wore dresses, pearls, a pill box hat and white gloves. We had curtains on the windows. We could extend our legs out completely and still have room left over. Sigh.

Oooh, I remember Wardair when I was a kid in the 60's/70's. My parents were expats from England, so all our relatives lived over there. Flying was very expensive in those days, and the fares were set by some government agency, so airlines could not compete on seat cost. Instead, they had to compete on service. It was so glamorous in those days!! Steak and lovely petit potatoes and veggies served on Royal Doulton china with real cutlery. Wine for the adults, and all the children were given cute flight bags with all sorts of toys and puzzles and souvenir postcards. I do miss those days!

I ALWAYS greet when boarding and thank them when leaving also say thank you when they give me a drink/snack. I so appreciate what they do for us. I just don't understand why you don't respond when they say hello, such poor manners. Going to remember the $5 tip. Great interview, thank you.

Twice I have flown on an airplane, and someone was in my seat, I politely showed them my boarding pass, and that they were in my seat, and they were really ugly about it. I can see why someone might, ask the flight attendant for help in this matter.

I saw a video about a case where two people with the same name were flying on the same flight, and they were both allocated the same seat. Only the flight attendants can sort out that sort of problem.

We give the Flight Attendants and Pilots a gift bag of candy with some little goodies (like inspirational or funny stickers) when we board. The message we always include is, “Thank you for keeping us safe!” We’ve had FA’s come up and tell us that it made their day, and once (on a regional jet), a lady pilot found us before takeoff. She had a Tootsie Pop hanging out of her mouth. She said she was pregnant, and that bit of candy was just what her baby needed❣️

I just did a round trip for my grandson's high school graduation. This consisted of two flights in each direction, thus four flight crews. I researched what aircraft was generally assigned for each leg, then purchased enough Starbucks gift cards for each crew, plus a couple extras in case of a plane change. Also purchased a pack of "Thank You" cards from Dollar Tree, which I signed and slipped the Starbucks cards inside. Handed the envelope to the flight attendant at the front door when boarding, politely saying this is for the whole crew. To say this went over well is an understatement - every one of the flight attendants on each flight came by my seat and thanked me personally for my thoughtfulness. It's the little things in life that often pay big dividends, folks!

Thank the Lord for an understanding flight attendant when we were traveling standby. The gate agent said no way, now how, all three of you will be split up. My five year old boy was balling his eyes out as we boarded because I had to explain to him that he needed to be a brave boy. The flight attendant asked what was the matter and she was on that loudspeaker asap requesting for someone to trade seats. Of course several people volunteered and it all worked out.

Some people, especially taller men tend to travel light with one bag so their legs can extend under the seat in front of them. I don't blame them for putting their smaller bag in the overhead. In fact I prefer it to people who are forever pushing the limits of what can fit up top.

I generally check my luggage. I put my backpack in the overhead bin with a clear conscience. I didn’t check my luggage to make room for your carryon. And I like to have my feet fit under the seat in front of me.

I had a woman in a scoliosis FB group block me after I said FAs are not required to help lift bags. I even told her that some FAs aren't even "on the clock" when passengers are boarding and thus, if they get hurt, they aren't covered. This is info that needs to get out there! Per Delta’s website: “When packing, please remember that flight attendants are unable to proactively assist customers placing carry-on baggage into overhead bins, with certain exceptions. In addition to keeping customers and crew members safe and healthy, this change also protects flight attendants by decreasing the likelihood of injury caused by repetitive lifting.” It’s right there for the reading. How many passengers actually read the carrier’s information is another question.

"I have a problem, can you help me, please" is a very useful phrase. or even just "can you help me, please?" and a pro tip: ask a guy if you need help lifting your carryon. unless he's a total jerk - and you can usually identify those by sight - he will be HAPPY to do it.

That's the reason I always check a bag- I'm in my late 70's, 5' tall, and can't reach, and I know the flight attendants are not insured to help. Plus, these days the overhead bags are already full by the time I get to my seat - one of the most annoying parts of travel - inconsiderate, selfish travelers.

I had a flight attendant thank me on a flight for helping out the lady sitting next to me. She had recently had surgery and had healed up enough to fly but still needed assistance.

Good information. I think the reason most people are hesitant to inform someone they are in their seat is due to the fear of the response. Unfortunately in todays world way too many people are borderline crazy. I have seen people on airplanes go nuts over simple things. One time a woman sat down next to me and was exhibiting odd behavior. She repeatedly said that she felt claustrophobic and afraid. I tried to say calmly things to her but as takeoff approached she was becoming scary and wanted off the plane. As I was trying to get up to let her out, she jumped up and jumped on top of me to get out. I alerted the flight attendant and she moved her. It was a very unnerving experience.

I sympathize with how uncomfortable this might have made you, but please be aware that claustrophobia is just as much a real medical issue as diabetes or a broken leg. It's not something you can just turn off because it's making someone else uncomfortable.

As a travel agent I hear about the paid seat issue a lot. If the airline has changed your flight, whether it be the aircraft type or route, the computer doesn’t know to reassign seats together. Even when it’s all on one reservation. If you’ve had a change to your itinerary prior to departure, contact your travel agent to get the seats reassigned (if they’re on the ball, they’ve already fixed this) or contact the airline directly.

I wanted to be a Flight Attendant in the 80’s and I was to short and didn’t weigh enough. 😓 I am a school bus driver now for 25 years and I too don’t like when I tell them good morning, or have a great afternoon and I get little responses. I was so stressed on an int'l flight when the gate agent told me my CPAP counted as my personal item and told me I had to check my carryon. There were lithium batteries and all my numerous Rx meds in it and I panicked. The flight attendant was so nice and took the airline tag off my bag and told me it was fine. I was so grateful to her. How do we convince gate attendants that CPAPs don't count as a personal item? I was so freaked out!

I’m always polite, and give a greeting to the flight crew when I’m boarding and disembarking. I’m 6’3, I have to turn my body in the seat and my knees are still against the back of the seat. That’s with the seat in the upright position. When the person in front me reclines their seat I just bit my lip, and sit quietly sit in pain until the flight attendants ask everyone to put their seats forward.

I've just started following you. I found this video very helpful. One small thing that convinced me to check my luggage was worrying about getting assistance in the overhead bin. I'm 73 yrs and am quite sure I cannot lift my suitcase that high. Plus I have to change planes so for my comfort I will just check my bag thru. This decision has made me much less stressed- despite the added cost. Thank you.

I hear you, I'm a younger senior than you but I destroyed 4 discs in my back in Indonesia many years ago (now THAT'S a two drink story!!), so lifting suitcases is hard for me. If you don't mind an unsought opinion, Away makes a "baby suitcase" - it is just like their regular wheeled carryon, and even has the same phone charger, but it is smaller than the smaller of their two carry on size cases, and from what I understand from customer reviews, the most common buyers of this style are seniors who find lifting a regular carry on a bit of a challenge. Just FWIW.

Just got home from a flight from Houston, TX, and people still put their rolling luggage flat down, taking up more room than necessary. So I’m the one who will put one on its side so I can put in my duffel bag or whatever bag I have to put in the bin. 🥴 People don’t like their stuff being touched but I don’t care anymore because you should think about how to conserve space when we constantly hear the gate staff announcing lack of room in the overhead bins. Sometimes the bins don’t allow suitcases to be out on their sides, too, so can’t do much about that.

I’m fortunate as a disabled person that ramp staff will assist me with boarding. I always make a point to speak to the flight attendants regarding my possible access needs. I also usually ask someone near me that is taller than me to retrieve my bag for me when we land.

The light at flight altitudes can be painful to some people. Partially opening it may be fine- you can see and others in the plane (even on the other side of the plane ) can be comfortable

My eyes burn so bad if the window light is shining in while I am trying to read in a darkened airplane but I understand. My MIL loves having it open.

Learned so much today! My thoughts on the couple seated apart were EXACTLY Jeannine’s thoughts. Recently I offered to trade seats with a dad so he could sit with his non-English speaking wife & toddler. He got my aisle seat; I moved to a middle seat. Little did we know he would be across the aisle from a baby that fussed most of the flight. Still, I think they appreciated it. I hope. A bit of consideration goes a long way

Thanks so much for this Laurie and Jeanine! Flight attendants have an incredibly difficult job these days - thanks for helping us understand. We have twice traded seats so we could sit together, but it was always aisle for an aisle or window for a window. I would never ask someone to give up a better seat for a lesser one. Also, we gladly trade with others (even if they don’t ask nicely) if needed. My husband and I both help young mothers with children and multiple bags if they wish. I hate it when people behind us crowd up for disembarkation to try to pass everyone. One “lady” almost tripped me with her suitcase pushed ahead when I was trying to get out. Not nice.

I have low vision I recently went on an international trip and I brought my own Sippy cup for beverage service. I have trouble seeing the regular beverage cups And their for their are a lot of spills This way I could see it more easilywhen I was drinking it and I could more easily See it and avoid the mess of a spill. Most of the flight attendants appreciated that!

I would never ask a flight attendant to lift my carry-on into the overhead bin but so far flight attendants seeing me about to lift my carry-on up have appeared at my side and done it for me. I always thank them graciously. I travel only on major commercial airlines.

I’ve never asked anyone to help me but there’s always some guy who wants to show his muscles! This has happened to me since I was a teenager and now I’m 61 so I don’t think it has anything to do with how attractive or old you are. There are genuinely people out there who will still help for no reason other than to be nice.

So good! Didn't know gifts were ok, & wonder if bags of baby carrots would be better than sugary treats??!! Just kidding, but really, I seldom have room in my bags for extra stuff, with Diabetes monitor & meds, camera, spare outfit, jacket, etc., etc. & now I'm having serious back problems, trying for our next scheduled trip to Nova Scotia to pack even lighter. . . puzzling.
