I’ve been using 2 gallon freezer bags to pack my shirts and pants in. I fold shirts flat into halves(or thirds). Lay the bags on my bed almost zipped up then lean on top, squishing out air and finish zipping. Works like a charm. Been doing this for years!

Love it too. If you have any plastic straws, try zipping the bag just to the corner, place straw inside leaving some outside. Now be a human vacuum and draw the air out, pinching or blocking the straw till you've drawn as much air out as you can. Get ready to pull the straw out quickly. You will have flattened the bag out much more this way. Pack the straw with you for the return trip. It can be used many times.

I like compression cubes because of the space saving ability and organization. I can organize by clothing type or by day. For example, when we go out west and we have a few days of driving, I can group my outfits and my little boys outfits together by "hotel stop." Day 1 together, day 2, etc. Then I just grab a cube rather than having to dig through my luggage, my kids luggage, etc. Our stuff is grouped together and I just grab one cube!

A packing list is ESSENTIAL for me. I feel about 85% ready to go after I have the list. Packing Cubes have changed the game for me. They allow my suitcase to be ORGANIZED. This will seem too extra to some people, but when we arrived at our destination, we wrote the contents of each cube on a 3x5 card and slipped that card in the cube. That step also made our packing to go home a breeze. We now always leave the 3x5 cards in the cubes to give us sort of a master packing plan for each trip. I know this video was more about stacking, rolling, folding methods. Truthfully, I’m not too good with any of it, so I just try to bring mostly mix and match clothing and get it in the cubes the best way I can, which varies. I probably should pick a method and try to get good at it, but - we’ll see!

I am so happy I found packing cubes a couple of years ago! When we used to cruise..sigh.. I would pack my clothes in individual cubes per category (underwear, shirts, pants, electronics, personal items, etc). When our suitcase was delivered to our cabin, the cubes were easily put into drawers or closet shelves. Also, we hung formal clothes, as well as dresses, shirts, etc. on wire hangers, put a plastic bag over them, fold it over once and put it in the suitcase..hangers and all. When we get to the room, we take the hanging items out and hang them in the closet. Presto! Unpacking is done, and it’s time for that first cruising cocktail! Thanks for all your hints. I still learn things every day! Let’s get back to traveling and cruising!

As a 6ft tall, plus size woman, I experimented with multiple techniques to accommodate my pants & shoe size. Pants are the worst because I can’t roll them without taking up all of the room in my suitcase. I fold them in half lengthwise and then place them inside the suitcase but with the legs coming outside. I rotate each pair so that all four sides have either the pant legs or the skirt out. Place the rolled items or even packing cubes inside the suitcase and then fold the pant legs over the top. I’ve even rolled the pant legs so that it covers the 4 sides (top) of the suitcase. It seems crazy but it does work really really well.

I use a modified version of the roll method to pack my suitcase. I fold items vertically so they are all the same approximate width before I roll them. The rolls need to be less than the depth of the suitcase so that I can line them upright inside the suitcase. That way I can see every item. Shoes go in the mesh part of the suitcase. I put items like socks inside the shoes. I also put each shoe in a plastic bag. Before I travel I make a list, of course. I build my travel wardrobe around a single neutral, an accent colour, and a multi-coloured print, depending upon the season. Everything has to go with everything else and it has to work at least 3 ways. I like a top with a multi-coloured print, such as a floral with a dark background, for travelling on planes and busses because stains are less noticeable on a print. Toiletries including liquids go in the small zippered pocket on the outside of the suitcase so it's easy to remove for Security screening. And in my carryon bag I always take a ziplock bag with a t-shirt dress, a change of undies, travel toothpaste and toothbrush. Just in case.

I do the same thing. When I roll each item, it’s more like a Konmari method to get the initial shape, then I roll. I would never do the tuck at the end for fear it would stretch out the fabric. I’ve been rolling clothes that way for travel since I was about 7 or 8 years old, and I’m 63 yrs old. Just discovered packing cubes about 6 years ago and I’m so addicted to them, I even use packing cubes in my ‘personal item’ to keep better organized during the flight.

Hello Laurie Thank you for demonstrating the army roll method. It takes time but the results are great. Especially for socks, tee-shirts and underpants. I used it on my most recent trip, having just done an ordinary roll before. I decided to leave my formal shirts flat as I didn't want to iron them again. I also folded my trousers. A bit messy, but I'm sure I'll get better with time. I went overboard with the packing cubes: nothing was loose in either bag. But I managed to get everything I needed for a week in Spain into my two carry-on bags, saving time and money! Thanks again for your videos. This recent trip to Las Vegas, I flat-packed. I laid out my button/pullover tops, 3 at a time, ontop of one another. Folded in the sleeves, then folded up the bottoms to make a half fold. Kind of like the famous bundle fold/packing method. I did a few bundles this way. I laid them inside of a large packing cube (approx 17.5" wide), which fits inside of a standard carry-on suitcase. I did the same for DH, tucking in the excess along each side of the cube. I filled the cube with more than needed tops . I half folded a lightweight jacket and a denim jacket on top of all. NO WRINKLES!! I could've packed for 2 or more weeks that way. For jeans/pants, I folded one leg over the other as you would to roll them, plopped the filled cube in the middle, then folded up each end over the cube. This made a package that I could lift in and out of the suitcase. Filled my other smaller packing cubes with the usual underwear/sleepwear/socks, and non-liquid essentials. The flat packing/folding is what I'm sticking with, but I'll admit, it's easy to overpack this way because less bulky folding leaves more room!!! Happy travels everyone. Be safe.

This year I bought 2 sets of packing cubes as my suitcase is always overweight, but with my fiance's always being underweight I've never had to pay extra, but this year I didn't want that so I bought 1 set originally then I realized that 6 cubes might not be enough so I bought a second set both came from Amazon! I have a total of 12 packing cubes now well 10 and 2 Laundry Bags which I'm going to let my fiance have 1 of the laundry bags as I don't need 2! Your ideas have been VERY helpful!

I think packing cubes are the only way to go when visiting multiple locations with a tour group. Instead of packing by category, I pack outfits for the period time I'm going to be at each place. That way I only take out one packing cube per location. It makes it way easier and faster when you're moving hotels every other night. You do need different size cube though, though since you might spend more time in one place than the other. This worked well for me when we did our Alaskan vacation which was both a land tour and cruise. I think it depends on the clothes which method works better Konmari or Rolling to get more in your suitcase.

I roll all my clothing in packing cubes. I use individual cubes for dresses, pants, tops, night growns, underwear, etc. Most of the materials of my clothing is polyster so I don't have much wrinkles. If I do have clothing that is wrinkle, I take it with me into the bathroom and the steam from the shower helps with wrinkles. I like that Army Roll and going to try it next time I travel. Thank you!

My favorite cubes are the compression cubes. Another tool I like to use are the packing envelopes. I really wish I could go on a 7 day cruise and just pack in a carry on like you do. It is a running joke between me and my hubby that this is a bucket list goal. I'm a "be ready for any contingency" packer, so he knows how hard that would be for me. :-) Some day..... Your videos are inspiring and so down to earth. Thanks! PS...loved your "joy" comment.

I did a 3 week cruise from Australia to New Zealand with only a carry-on. Most cruise ships & hotels have a laundry room and I definitely used it. I took Woolite dry cleaning sheets & laundry detergent sheets (Lucky Fiji brand). I’ve done this for multiple trips and it usually works out well. I am not a tiny woman, I’m 6 ft tall, plus size, so packing is definitely an adventure!

Folding into packing cubes works for me. I usually fold 2/3 then tuck the remaining third (I’m tall). I sometime find rolling socks and undies easier. Put them in packing cube too. Makes it easier to pick out what I want. Also for collared shirts I alternate directions in the packing cube. You get more in the cube without compression.

It seems I've been doing a combo of the Konmari and rolling methods when I pack. Last October, I flew to London where I stayed for six months. I took two 29" suitcases, a 19" carry-on, and a "personal item" which was a laptop bag. I noticed many Londoners do not wear patterned shirts, so I won't be taking those this October. My plan is to only take one 29", the carry-on, and the laptop bag. The coats will take up the most space. Thanks for the video. Very informative.

I use a combination of methods. I fold my shirts as you do, but then roll them. I use packing cubes to help keep things organized. Packing cubes and small pouches are also helpful for the times when your luggage is hand-searched. Most of my air travel is outside the US, and it's not unusual to have your luggage hand-searched once or twice after going through the security scanners (once after the scanners & once right before boarding.) I also like packing cubes to keep things organized during my travels.

I actually roll knit shirts and put them in packing cubes. Lets me see what’s there without rifling thru a stack. I also pack the “dirties” that way (with underwear rolled inside) and put a rubber band around them to indicate those items need washing. This helps on tours when you’re staying at more than one hotel and pack and unpack multiple times.

Laurie, love your videos. I used to travel at least monthly for 2-5 nights. My favorite packing method is fold and roll with packing cubes. Love compression cubes instead of a laundry bag. Pack dirty clothes in compression cube, compress and laundry is packed for traveling home. One thing I have learned is to watch the weight of your luggage when using compression cubes. I also use compression cubes for pajamas, socks and under garments. It can be very easy to over pack. I got 3 new pieces of luggage and new compression cubes for birthday and Christmas and can’t wait to try them out. I use and/or have tried several pieces from your videos, especially when flying. I've done a lot of travelling, usually for business. Now that I'm retired (and waiting for restrictions to lift) my travel is for pleasure so I am more flexible about wardrobe needs. I LOVE cubes for organizing my 'stuff'. Socks in one, underwear in another, t-shirts/blouses in a medium, bottoms in a large - or just folded on top. I take one extra (empty) medium cube that I can stuff my dirty clothes into until I can wash them or get home to run them through the laundry. I line it with a plastic bag so any soil or odours don't end up on my clean outfits.

I roll then stuff into packing cubes, but I always fold the sleeves, and most of the time the crotch, in before I start rolling, giving me a better rectangle to work with. I saw a video once (I think it was on the channel Travel Fashion Girl) that talked about how to fit more into a packing cube, and she suggested partially zipping it up, then you have something to brace against as you stuff more in. I use that trick, which, in effect, turns my regular packing cubes into compression cubes, so I don't always need to take as many with me. And the packing cubes function as dirty clothes bags on my way home (my one suitcase doesn't have a pocket on the inside of the lid, which is where I would normally put my dirty clothes). A list is invaluable - I find I end up bringing far more when I don't make a list (though granted, it's kind of hard to predict the exact weather of a Midwest winter 6 weeks in advance, despite studying the forecast for the entire week leading up to leaving, so I just brought things that were likely to be needed based on previous years), and sometimes when I'm making a list, I will go so far as to pack everything up to determine what will actually fit, and whether I need to substitute a shirt that rolls smaller for one that doesn't roll as small. Gone are the days when I would bring 2 huge suitcases plus other bags just for Christmas break. However, if you're looking at getting a set of packing cubes, I highly suggest measuring your suitcase's usable interior space and paying very close attention to the packing cube dimensions - obviously they'll have slightly different dimensions when filled with clothes, but it still gives you a good general estimate, which can do a lot to help you avoid getting ones that are too big or too small, and ending up with either wasted space or cubes that are too big to fit. I was debating between 3 different sets before I finally settled on one to get, and my deciding factor was how the dimensions of the cubes would fit in my particular suitcase (a "large" size cube would actually pretty much fill that entire suitcase, so my biggest one is a medium). Thanks to one of the best Christmas presents I've ever gotten, I no longer have to always fly with a small water purification system in my suitcase, so I'm trying to decide what to do about the extra space that I'm very much looking forward to having - maybe it'll allow me to sometimes fit all my medical stuff into my suitcase, instead of always having to pack it in a separate bag every single time, but if so, I'm probably going to end up wanting another packing cube to fill the space efficiently, so I'll need to measure the space that's left to figure out which size to get.

Great tips! Can't wait to hear what you do with the extra space. Thank you for watching!

I can fit four pairs of shoes in corners around the two flat cubes. The other three pieces are zip one long and narrow perfect for hair brush, tooth brush case and non liquid toiletries, tech stuff and jewelry. The next smaller is perfect for socks undies and bras. The medium zipper I use for pjs bathing suit or delicate fabrics. My biggest take away is how neat and organized my bag is if I need to dig in carry on for something. Everything has a place. I love and use packing cubes and pack by type - tops, bottoms, etc. if I need to compress I use gallon size zip lock bags. But weight is a big issue for me. As I’ve gotten older and am dealing with shoulder issues, compression easily gets me to overweight luggage and problems handling it. So I try to pack loosely

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I have started using backpacks more and more. Hands free is the way to go. Especially because I need to use a cane for balance.
