Best way to attend Kumbh is day trip. Don't try to stay overnight there. Arrive early in the morning by bus or train or flight or cab or whatever you get from your stay and take holy dip , after that visit mela and Akhda of Sadhus. Leave the place before Sunset. In 2010 Haridwar Kumbh mela that I exactly deed from Kolkata.2 night up journey and 2 night return journey. Continue 4 night journey and almost 8 -9 hours walk
