I'm only going off of the small snippets of publicly available information about his past behavior, but I suspect that he is mentally ill. They probably found him difficult to deal with and also not very useful, so they decided to get what ever positive PR they could out of releasing him (sort-of) promptly.

If he didn't do what he did, he was looking at a Bad Conduct Discharge, worst case scenario. But now, he'll be charged with desertion, and end up with a Dishonorable Discharge after serving time in the Brig. And, that's best case scenario.

He IS a ACTIVE U.S. Soldier Deployed in South Korea, he was JAILED for Two Months in a South Korea Prision for Criminal Actions while in S.Korea, the JAG was able to free him and have him deported to the USA which after a SPEEDY Trial would be DISHONORABLY DISCHARGED and probably face JAIL TIME. He was ESCORTED to SEOUL INT. AIRPORT and after he pass SECURITY was left to himself to board the Plane were he would be ARRESTED by the MPs once he reached US SOIL. HE DECIDED to go AWOL and DEFECT to the ENEMY or the Rival Factions which he SWORE to Fight, his PRIMARY DIRECTIVE while DEPLOYED in S. Korea. He MUST BE a REALLY BAD PERSON for Mr. KIM to have THROWN him OUT so QUICKLY! I Assume he was complaining DAILY for not having a SPEEDY WiFi and not having SUSHI every Day instead of Rice with Fake Soy Sauce. He SHOULD be sent to Guan Tana Mo but that wont happen.

When you become a reject from North Korea, after running there, that tells me everything, I need to know about the loser. I have a feeling that he actually lied to his mother and family and as overbearing as the mother seems, he thought North Korea was a better option than to deal with telling his family, he is a loser and was going to get booted from the military.

We don't know what prompted him to act out the way he did. I read he was despondent over the death of a close relative. Could he have had a mental health breakdown? We just don't know yet. As a military mom myself, I just hope that he gets the help that he needs if he is unwell. If that is not the case, I know that he will be prosecuted for his actions. In any case, I am glad for his family that he is now safely in U.S. custody.

But he's also very mentally ill, so he'll probably be incarcerated at Balboa, and if they confirm that he was mentally ill at the time, he might be honorably discharged, but not likely. Probably a dishonorable d/c. Idk how the military goes about these things when a serious mental illness is involved.

Punishments for desertion in the military is a dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, reduction to the lowest enlisted grade & confinement for five years.

He's an entitled child and didn't wanna face the consequences for his actions, and if he wasn't a US soldier he would have died in NK. The only mental problem he had was his delusion and entitlement.
