Less Friend but Not Enemy is perhaps the best description of spiders.

I think the drawing the “less friend but not enemy” line is next to is specifically the eye pattern of a recluse spider, while the ones above it, starting from the top, are a jumping spider (I’m guessing, because the drawing only shows the front two pairs) and a wolf spider.

Your channel appeared just as I was dispelling my arachnophobia and taking a huge interest in spiders, so, for me, your timing was impeccable. I just want to say thank you for the amazing content you provide us. I'm now the spider guy of the family, and have been teaching my young nieces and nephews all about what to do when they find themselves with a spider in an inopportune place in the house. We know that smooshing isn't what we do, and the cup-and-envelope relocation method is best. It's been one of the most extreme 180's for me, and it's all thanks to you and your content. Again, you're frickin'awesome, your content is awesome, your family is awesome for giving you what you need to do what you do. I cannot wait to see everything you'll do in 2024. This channel is exactly what I was looking for. So much spider information out there seems to consist of books for children, sensationalist videos of people provoking bites for clicks, or else research papers that are not very accessible for laymen. So, thanks for providing something that’s “sciencey,” but that I can understand, lol

Thanks for a great year, Travis! I'm so happy to have been able to see your channel grow in real time. It still blows me away how many people were drawn to our little spider community! And don't try to take too much credit away from yourself by saying you're not a real teacher. Your enthusiasm mixed with your rigour and attention to detail is incredible! You are an amazing educator! I will say for myself that I was afraid of spiders when I was young. My (late) aunt taught me not to fear them and just to watch them. Now I actually find them really cute! I've just finished my mathematics degree and I can't tell you how many times the spiders in my house have kept me company while I was up studying late into the night. It's really interesting to think you can have this kind of relationship with an animal who has adopted your home as its habitat. Really calming too, just to watch them quietly scurrying along the walls, looking for prey or a place to shelter. Cheers from Waterloo, Ontario!

As a home-gardener I'm always glad to see spiders doing natural pest control (I was about to suggest branching out to garden spiders, so I'm very much looking forward to the new series!) But since watching your videos I appreciate my tiny in-house roommates a lot more.Just today I saw a cellar spider (? The long-legged fella. I'm still learning the english terms) catching a much bigger spider in her net, it was definitely fascinating! Fun fact: in german those spiders are called "Große Zitterspinne" which roughly translates to "big shiverspider", I guess because of how they dance when disturbed. TLDR: Keep up the good work!

You're worth every penny of your Patreon subscription and more. Thanks for taking us on this journey with you, Travis. I remember being in a meeting at work and suddenly there was a shriek from one of my co-workers - a spider had found her, of course. I rushed around the table and caught it before she could do something that would break my heart, and talked soothingly to it as i brought it to a safe spot in one of the planters. I don't care if everyone thought me mad - at least the spider lived to capture some fungus gnats and crawl another day. I hope that eventually tarantulas are talked about once the local spiders are all categorized. Don’t know the semantics of how that would work though. Your videos are great!
@travismcenery291910 ай бұрын
I might do something like that down the line - there are tarantulas that occur in the southern US. Thanks for the comment!

I really only have _Eratigena atrica_ here as far as I know, but maybe they'll come up in other ways. Thanks for the comment!

I grew up loving spiders myself. Living in the Seattle area, one of my favorite pastimes as a young kid was going around with my friends and throwing ants into mostly giant house spider webs and watch them quickly take them down. I’ve handled more spiders than I could possibly count, and was only bitten once (by a male cross orb weaver of all things). Now that I’m an adult, I’ve got a modest collection of nine tarantulas. I can’t say enough how much I’ve appreciated this channel, and I’m glad to hear you plan to keep up the amazing work!

Happy New Year, Travis! I'm so excited about the next year of spider videos. Since I started watching your channel, I've set up a ten gallon, multi-species, bioactive terrarium, and captured and observed several spider species, including this absolutely minute species I haven't identified yet which are maybe 1-2mm long and are making a little colony in my terrarium. I've watched baby wolf spiders grow from the egg sac into gorgeous little hunting machines. I've always loved spiders but I've now taken a much more interactive approach to learning about them. I appreciate you and the focus you've given me. Cheers!

I'm a recovering arachnophobe, and since 2016, tarantulas have been my favorite animal. I love all spiders, and your videos help me lean in to that wonder of when I'm watching a spider in the house or backyard. I love how each spider you see every day has something unique about it. For a while, I even kept a huge wolf spider that I saw at the park and built it a home in my bedroom. Here in Arizona, we also have tarantulas, and they can get in the house! Anyways, it's really fun to watch you find the ins and outs of all the local spiders and see them as the beneficial animals that they are.

Bliadhna Mhath Ur! (That's Scots Gaelic for Happy New Year) I've been following your channel since the very get go. This is due to my recommended channels being so esoteric in nature that everything gets recommended to me in weird ways. I've always enjoyed the in-depth and insightful way you've explored the different species of spiders thus far, and I can say with certainty that the Spider Basics videos are going to be of great interest to me; building a strong foundation for knowledge is always one of my priorities when learning about new things. I'm glad that your community has been so strong and supportive for you, as well! Inadvertently helping others with their arachnophobia likely builds strong fellowship, but I think the fascination and general awe of spiders has done it as well. I hope that as your channel grows, these comments will continue to bolster you and galvanize your mission of being the spider guy (I'm still thinking of a more grandiose title for an arachnological science communicator; Silk Bridge, maybe?). I also hope your wife continues to be as supportive as she has been thus far; infinite patience combined with an editorial mindset sounds like she's actually as involved as you are in all of this. Does she also like learning about spiders alongside you? That would be awesome. Finally, thank you for all the effort you put in to remain accurate and scientific. I know a lot of people in the world today have forgotten that science is a process, but your videos show the scientific method in all its glory, and that is an extremely important aspect of these videos. I hope you have a wonderful new year, and I look forward to the fruits of your enthusiastic endeavors.

I’m so glad I found your channel in the last few months! I ended up being the same way in college - I knew Entomology would probably be a rough field to find work in so I went with computer information systems instead, Now I work in the IT field but one of the few things in life that still bring me joy are insects and spiders.

I love it! my interest in spiders actually started as fear. My grandma claimed that a spider egg sac fell into her shirt and hatched. in a bid to defeat my fear as I grew older I started looking at Cellar spiders. They weren't intimidating. One day I spotted a cellar egg sac and watched every day waiting for baby spiders. Since then I've just explored my space aiming to identify and learn as much as I can. Yesterday I lured a grass spider out I screamed "Oh You're So Beautiful!!!"

So, to touch on your response to our responses, I thought you might find it interesting that your videos encouraged me to get to know and even sort of foster the cellar spiders I have around the place. And while I'm a bit too tired to launch into any stories or some of the questions I actually have, I just felt like I should say something while I'm here and thinking about it. Looking forward to all the things you have planned.
