That motor mount is the only thing holding me back from getting the sledge. Thank you for you’re honest feedback UPDATE: I ended up buying a sledge. I’ve had it for 6 months now. I liked it so much I bought a second one second hand. It’s been one hell of a beast. I bash and jump it on a 45 degree ramp and it’s been taking it. Only thing that broke so far is the rear diff ring gear. I already ordered a $50 hardened gear from Traxxas. Motor mount is solid. So far it’s been my favorite rc car

items that make it lighter/stronger seem to really make this the best rc. Faster.. no. Stock gearing(hardened steel), add a fan to the motor, maybe dboots backflips. But Basherqueen carbon fiber shock towers and GPM carbon fiber Tbar wake up the handling and it's even better than stock. Don't add aluminum to this car.

Traxxas seems to be Iphone of RC. They're made to work within their ecosystem and that's it. That's what I've noticed running the Traxxas Maxx V2 4s. As long as you keep it stock, it works but if you want to do mods it feels like they've put minute hindrances built in to annoy you every step of the way.

Good call my maxx v2 is stock and is super tough. I don't plan on changing anything, traxxas spends a ton of money in R and D on these vehicles, they are strong as built. If you change one thing is creates a weakness somewhere else.

I have an older green one. I've done quite a bit of simple mods including a complete color swap on the anodized parts and a Mamba to match it. Other than the stupid motor mount to the chassis, I really have no complaints. I beat the life out of mine and it holds up. Although I do agree that the stock version is best. I have a few Sledges and the one that makes it through an entire session, every time, is my bone stock version.

My opinion, It was a money spinner for traxxas. Anyone who seen the first review knew not to buy one, who puts a nitro style motor mount on a basher? With your pinion coming loose, are you running the stock chassis? If so you probably have a slight bend at the motor mount holes. This angle puts outward pressure on the pinion and spur mesh. That pressure slowly pulls your pinion off the motor shaft no matter how strong the loctite, or how hard you tighten the grub. Hey man, too bad about your experience. Mine has been great on some pretty big bashes.

I feel ya. If I dropped a grand on a RC and couldn't run a full pack through it without a failure I'd be pissed 😡 lol I've watched many vids on the Sledge and what I've found is to make it super tough you have to upgrade the crap out of it then you end up with 1500 dollar in a RC that should only cost half of that IMO. The Sledge is a awesome RC once upgraded but dang I couldn't justify the price when you could get a Kraton etc Nice jumps Love how you set it up to where you land on a down slop, makes the landings look so much better and it's a lot easier on the truck. 🔥👍✌️

I love the truck but have to agree . Traxxas does things in a way so that the new hobbies guys can keep purchasing there proprietary parts because that’s what they are. When they design a Rc, they don’t do it for the hobbiest as u said taking into the consideration of the opinions of consumers, they design it so you HAVE TO go aftermarket to mod or only purchase their stuff. I’ve got so much aftermarket on my sledge u can’t even call it a sledge anymore

traxxas pinions are garbage. Tooths rip off very easily. I like to use Tekno pinions because M5 nuts. Those can be tightened way more than the smaller ones. Also it really helps to use grease on pinion and spurgear so they don't create so much friction -> heat. The heat will loosen the loctite and so the pinion looses easily.

I have the motor mount washers which are ten bucks. New pinion and spur, hot racing. Motor doesn’t move whatsoever, one of the best and toughest trucks I’ve had. I put a 5mm bash bar on it from radical rc UK. If you get and put those washers on the motor cannot move. They sell four different types for different spur and pinion setups, they are a game changer, no need to buy a different motor mount.

My 3s stampede 4x4 and Kraton 6s pinions always stay put. I used to have a HPI Savage Flux and that pinion always worked itself loose even with Loctite. I never did figure out why that was. Are you thinking the mesh between aftermarket gears is causing a Harmonic or Vibration that overcomes the pinions ability to stay put. I believe there is an issue because you are an experienced RC guy - but I guess I am not quite understanding what exactly you think is causing the issue. I understand that this would be frustrating but also wonder exactly what the issue is..

I feel your pain. Same way I felt with my first ERevo. Do you think you would have had the same issues had you left it stock? I truly feel they set this truck up to either never be upgraded or only use Traxxas parts. At some point they are going to release either the inserts to adjust the motor mount or release a whole new motor mount. It feels like the same formula that they've done with the XMaxx 6s and the original Maxx, get the product out first, let the community state the issues then release a whole new truck.

Jason, really enjoy your content. As a newbie into RCs (roughly five months), hearing real life experiences and opinions of many different vehicles is invaluable. My 13-year old son and I own a Traxxas Hoss 4x4 VXL. We really enjoy it and the times that it breaks down it's usually do to driver error. I do most of the wrenching and he does most of the driving, so we're looking into getting another RC. We went with Traxxas initially because our local hobby shop is a Traxxas dealer which has been a great help. Would like your thoughts on a next RC. Some say that it's good to get another Hoss to share parts but we would live to venture out into different types. Not sure if you've owned or used one of these vehicles but what about the TRX-4 Defender or the Slash 4X4 Ultimate? And is there any issues to buying used or best to stay with new? Thank you!

The Slash is one of Traxxas' best. Short course trucks are generally very strong all brands. The body takes most of the damage with the arms being enclosed. Good luck, i'll suggest the Ultimate.

I got the Hoss. It's weakness is the shocks/suspension. I then got the Maxx V2. It's the next step up. So much more durable. Drive it conservatively on 3S. Put it on 4S and have some serious fun. Good luck!

@@FLPatrick1095 Patrick, thank you! I've also heard great things about the Slash and to also go with the Ultimate as it has a lot of upgrades that come standard. Appreciate the advice.

@@bigalinbc4075 Big AL, thanks! I love the Hoss I've upgraded to the GTR Shocks with heavier weight oil. It has made a huge difference. I'm digging the Maxx V2 with the wide stance too. Tough choices.

For the price of this rig you can almost get an 8s Armma which is a no brainer. Yeah I’d be highly upset with this truck having dishing out all the money and not even getting a single pack through and your not the only one with issues from the start with this truck highly disappointed I’ll stick with my Arrma rigs way less problems out the box from what I’ve seen, keep on bashing buddy!

Traxxas offers different ratios of spur and pinion gears. It shows the speed chart on the website- there’s no reason to say the truck is only designed for the stock gears. The pinion falling off is not due to poor backlash, which would break the teeth. If possible, I would try cutting a small divet in the motor shaft for the grub screw to anchor into.

i've barely had any issues with my sledge. once i changed out my servo and got belted tires, 0 complaints. seriously. ive cycled through damn near 20, 30 packs now with no issues, and i dont baby it either. no pinion slipping, no motor shifting, nada, nothing. the stock servo did short out, and since it was a Day 1 sledge i didnt have drive cups. both were very easy fixes, put a raw 500 in it, and i got some o rings. simple. ive felt 0 need to change anything else on the truck, seriously. its borderline uncontrollable as it is, and anything ive wanted to tune is perfectly doable on my phone.

I do. But the Sledge was already an expensive truck. And since it doesn't do anything better than the other trucks. I am having a hard time sinking even more money in to a truck to just bring it up to the same level as a Kraton EXB or Kronos XTR.

easy fix just use a dremel tool and put notch on keyed section of the motor shaft were the set screw would go. problem solved.

Broke three pinions, two spur gears, and a motor. Avoidable with $9.99 for motor base reinforcements. No excusing Traxxas for this, but it’s still the best basher ever.

Oh man I could hear the apprehension at the beginning and it just turned into frustration 👀 It’s such a bummer when you get a truck that won’t preform. I will say that I am seeing some amazing videos of Sledges fully upgraded, but if your trying to keep it stock this truck is a big letdown.

Arrma safe-D pinion and drill a little dimple into the motor shaft for the set screw to sit in. I do it for all my higher powered RCs. Unfortunately the issue isnt your motor or gear mesh, its the soft set screw getting squashed on the end and no longer being tight

Hey Jason 👋🏻 yea I’m actually opposite, lol I totally agree with you. At first I was like wait he’s running aftermarket motor so how can pinion be it’s fault. After ya explained the engineering and mount system, it’s definitely Trashix trying ta make you buy there parts. 🤣👍🏻 I’ll stick with my Kraton Beefcake build!! Keep bashin !!

I just recently got into RC's about 3 weeks ago and picked me up the sledge, sadly I'm having the same exact issues as the one in this video. I was hoping it wouldn't be having these problems for the price point but I've had no luck. Honestly I regret purchasing the sledge and would have gone for a kronos roller and built it up for right around the same price as the sledge stock. If your thinking about getting yourself a sledge be prepared to spend around $500 more than what you bargained for just on reinforcing the truck with m2c and other stonger metals and around a $1000 if you plan on putting high quality electronics into it as well. My final build for the sledge will cost me around $2,200 total just for perspective, (purchase of sledge included) then again I want all the strong materials and high quality electronics in this thing.

And see that is my issue. You can buy a Kronos XTR, Kraton EXB and get WAY better durability straight out of the box. Hopefully it's a good truck for you now.
