The 4 uppercuts before that were brutal as well. Cooney was in trouble once Foreman unlocked the uppercuts, which started with two in quick succession at 5:04. Then another which is called by the commentator. Then the big one which puts him on the way to the knockdown. Then the finisher.

Yeah.. probably. But it's funny... george knew when to hang the gloves up. If george had met shannon Briggs at the point in time in this existence, when he fought cooney? Shannon would have been seeing stars. George's stars. For quite a while. As would almost anyone. Little known stat. About the great muhammad ali. He bested foreman. Fair and square. In Zaire? In 1974? I think. It's TRUE. But it's interesting. A little known comment George said afterthe ali fight is this. "" muhammad, I know how you beat me. And trust me. If we tangle again you'll never beat me again."" What did george mean by that ? I quess we'll never fully know. But I think we all know what George meant. Ali smartly did the rope av dope. And voted big george into his style of fight. If ali had tried to take george on all out? Right away? Ali would have been toast. Credit to ali for being a smart fighter. All round. Recently though, in an interview, foreman was asked if he thought he stood a chance against lennox lewis at his age. George laughingly replied "" are you kidding me? That young man would kill me." @@vinnievenus3570 Personally I think there was more than meets the eye to that fight with Ali in Zaire. Foreman has written in his memoirs that the night of the fight in Zaire he felt he was doped by his coach and that his water tasted funny. Forman said by the early rounds he felt as if he was exhausted like it was the 15th. I also heard Ali stated that he would only fight George again if he kept the same trainer… also watch the count. George was up by 8 or nine and the ref waved him off already. I admire Muhammed Ali but he also cheated In the fight with Gary Cooper. Ali’s own coach admitted to splitting the gloves during the fight.
@jonburrows86022 жыл бұрын
@@sleepinggiant4102 You forgot to add that the ropes were made abnormally loose, allowing for his rope a dope. After the 1960s, Ali used employed many questionable, bordering on unethical tactics to defeat younger as talented opponents. Or he would get soundly beaten, like in his 3rd fight with Ken Norton or his fight with Jimmy Young, and still get the decision.
@helmberteisenschnauzer72332 жыл бұрын
@@jonburrows8602 Young ducked out of the ropes every time Ali finally got the opportunity to get to work on him. That is against the rules. The ref warned him repeatedly until at some point he had seen enough and counted the next one as a knockdown. Young's head was within the ropes in no time. It still counted as a knockdown. Young had a ton of points deducted for this behaviour. That is why he lost. He did not beat Ali "soundly". Young was smart. Against someone like Foreman, such tactics would never have worked because such big punchers simply destroy your body when your head is out of the ropes. But against Ali, a pure headhunter par excellence, he smartly figured it might work. Young was also dumb. Because when the ref started warning him he still stuck to a strategy that was bound to fail.

I`ve read that some people in "boxing circles" consider Gerry Cooney`s left hook to the body as perhaps the single most powerful punch boxing has ever known. I`ll never forget what George said shortly after this bout, he said;..." About 50 seconds into the first round Cooney threw a left hook to my body, I managed to block it with my right arm,.......the power went through my arm and into my body and within seconds left me feeling dizzy". That is scary power indeed.

Based solely on Foreman’s advanced age, which at the time iirc seemed to me likely to bottom out all at once, I thought Cooney was going to benefit again from facing an over-the-hill Alltime great heavyweight at the right time (if you’ve never before viewed, see: Cooney-Norton (1981). But watching now, it becomes PAINFULLY clear why Tommy Morrison hauled azz around the ring as if he was Willie Pep 😂 the night he managed to hang one of Big George’s 5 career losses on him (for career, George Foreman was 76-5. WOW 🤩, what a record! Especially considering that he fought many of those fights after he turned FORTY!). Cooney only fought sporadically, so I don’t consider this one of George’s signature wins or anything, especially considering how easy this was, which I found shocking, but Foreman shows here what a MASTER boxer he was at this point in his career. The very definition of a “PROFESSIONAL Boxer”. He was no great shakes or anything, but Cooney could always PUNCH, so this was never a risk-free proposition for Foreman. But the fact that Foreman & Cooney aren’t inthe same CLASS as boxers was the difference here.
