Once again, Gav shows that when it comes to reviewing obscure early-1980s knock-off lion toys, he's the mane man.

The "Let's Go Lion" on the front of the box is extra nerdy/silly because Voltron was originally called Golion in Japan

It's retired now but i highly recommend tracking down the Lego Voltron set. I think it may be the best set Lego has ever made. It has 5 lions that combine and it's huge. A real achievement of toy engineering.

Voltron holds 2 special places in my heart. I remember as a kid seeing the toys in mt local "Toys by Roy" mall toy store. I knew I had to have one. I went to the counter with Voltron and asked the lady behind the counter, "How much does this cost?" She said, "$99.99." I started to tear up. I only had $35.00 in birthday money. She might as well have said $1000. I left the store saddened in the fact that there was no way I could afford him. That place in my heart, though sad at the time, taught me to understand the value of some toys and, later, the nostalgia of having a child dream toy. So one day what I could afford a Voltron, he was mine. The second special place was filled. Today, I no longer have that Voltron, but I still remember the fun of that incredibly simple yet fantastic toy. Great review of a fun trip down memory lane.

This looks to be in incredible condition considering it's a KO from the 80s. You'd think barely any would exist now let alone being practically mint. Gawd I want one.

Well good luck cause this specific KO is in the same situation as the KO TrainBots in other words it’s still rare, expensive, and treasured by collectors.

Sometimes I think about how Golion/Voltron has any kind of notoriety is due to it being (accidentally) picked as the giant robot show from Japan that most English speaking audiences cared about watching. (There was Shogun Warriors/Force Five before it, but I don't know how much an impact that had.)
@SaturmornCarvilli Жыл бұрын
But Gavin, you have to wait until the end of the combination to reveal the head and say, "And I'll form the head!" That's a fantastic find. I never had Voltron as a kid, but the cartoon was my first experience with anime. It was one of my favorite shows then. I did get the chance to play with that version of the toy back then. I'm not sure if the American version had all the missiles and lion blades. I just remember the sword and shield. Though, the actual owner could have lost them by the time they showed them off to me. Still, great video, dude.
@stueymon Жыл бұрын
Weirdly enough, I too had a Voltron toy, two actually, despite never seeing the cartoon. I had the transforming lions similar as shown today and a remote control non-transforming Voltron. My transforming Voltron was utterly shoddy, like a strong breeze could knock them apart

Fun fact, the US localization of Beast King Golion [as Voltron, of course] was handled here in St. Louis, MO, by World Events Productions/Koplar, which ran Channel 11 KPLR here until Nexstar Media bought them out.

HeMan jellies! That blast from my E-numbers and now illegal food colourings fuelled past had me reeling! I am convinced that kind of nutritionally bereft confectionary aided my now prodigious adult dexterity, as I had to learn how to peel the back off them and pop them out myself, so my parents would have. No idea how many of them I had actually eaten.

I put in a preorder for a model kit of this and it's for almost the same reason, never had a childhood Voltron, I'm a young hip boy in his mid 20s, but I love a blocky lion man that turns into little lions.

Not sure if you are mocking this or not, but it really is incredible. I had the plastic version of the black lion as a kid but I always secretly wanted the blue lion. Unfortunately blue was taboo, because the original pilot went crazy and the second pilot was a princess which, as every young lad knows, is not a toy for boys to play with.

Nice find and getting back part of your lost childhood. I remember the toy and didn't know anything about it. I just wanted the toy, took me years till I found one that I like Bandai Soul of Chogokin Voltron. Then a few years later Lego did one. I love Lego so a two for one.

Great review! Honestly I had my three growing up too, mine would have been Getter G, Grendizer and She Ra, stuff that grabbed my heart as a kid despite me really knowing nothing about any of their fictions. Love reviews when we get to see this much passion, really adds something when the toy means so much to the person. Thanks for sharing.
