This is something, even as an intermediate learner, that I never considered and actually struggled with recently! The way you explained this resonated with me more within 5 minutes than simply learning phrases in the passé composé ever did. Merci beaucoup, Madame!

Not gonna lie i spent 3 hours in my french class understanding nothing because this seemed to be a huge bump for my dyslexic brain, but watching this video allowed my brain to break down the rules and digest better, thank you Alexa!

The necessary points I took in my notes : Le passé composé (the compound past tense) = auxiliary verb - a key verb which helps to change a verb in specific tense + past participle There are two auxiliary verbs Être (to be) Avoir(to have) If we say - you played {Passé compose ( passive voice)} With avoir - (auxiliary) + past participle It will be - tu as. joué |. |. | |. |. | Pronoun. Avoir. Past participle Or You fell - tu es tombé (es is être)
@Gary-pe4ce2 жыл бұрын
Also add onto your notes joué(e), tombé(e) because if it was a female who is doing the action you write the extra e, if it is male you don't add the e Examples Il a joué Elle a jouée Il est tombé Elle est tombée. To add on for a little more advanced sentence, when there is a direct object involved For example: a man buying a car. J'ai acheté une voiture I have bought a car Acheté remains for masculine because the subject is a man. But what if the direct object suddenly comes before the verb? Do note objects use le/la when a verb done to them, and when using passé composé it must be next to the auxiliary verb. La voiture, que j'ai achetée, est là The car, that I bought, is there Or, if appropriate, can use the word it instead Je l'achetée I bought it The reason it is like this is because the past participle now has to agree with the direct object as the direct object comes before the past participle, in which cause, la voiture, is feminine.

@analo643310 ай бұрын
The basic rule of thumb is as follows: 'Avoir' is used for transitive verbs (that is, verbs that take a direct object). Examples include 'Manger', 'Voir', 'Regarder' and 'Lancer'. 'Être' is used for intransitive verbs (that is, verbs that do not take a direct object), especially (BUT NOT ONLY!!!) verbs of movement.

This was always something I found a little interesting because in certain colonized parts of the francophonie, avoir is still used more often than être. I still hear je suis né but also j'ai été né, j'ai été au bal, on a descendus, etc.

My native language is Dutch and we use to have and to be (hebben en zijn) the almost same as in French. I can see why native English speakers are struggling with this. There are some differences though. 'I have washed myself' is 'ik heb me gewassen' in Dutch. So I have to get used to saying 'je me suis lavé'!

Hello ma'am, first of all thank you for making these videos for the people who are eager to learn a new language. Second of all, About the acronym DR & MRS VANDERTRAMP i saw on google that it actually has 17 letter instead of 16. The additional verb was 'passer' could you explain that as well. Please and thank you
