I love Near's theme and the intro. I'm not a fan of him but I still enjoyed the back and forth in the second part. It was still good, it just struggled to keep up with the first part but was still enjoyable. Also I like how Mello is a spanner, pushing as many plans as he can to overwhelm his opponent before it can react, while Near tries to go for a big picture frame and Light is caught and overconfident in it all.

The reality is Melo is more like L strategically because he's a Adapting Short Game Strategist and Near is more like Light/Kira strategically because he's more of a Brilliant Long Game Strategist. When it come to personality Melo is more like Light/Kira (especially when it comes to being emotional) outside of loving sweets like L and Near when it comes to personality is more like L (especially when it come to being emotionless) outside of being more cool like Light/Kira.

Near as a character is perfectly fine, the problem is the way he is portrayed. For me the anime is 9/10 not 10/10 because L was killed and the anime continued just for the sake of "Good triumphs over Evil" thing. It would've been a 10/10 is near was introduced while L was alive and then L dies so near could take revenge by bringing Kira to justice. This way near would've been loved by everyone. Or on the other hand make L win by him finding Kira or simply ending the show on a darker ending in which L dies and Kira becomes the new god.

mello was literally about to resolve the kira case by himself. he was killed off because he was too close to figure everything out but the story wasn't yet ready to end, as explained by the author.
