There are many treadle hammer videos on youtube, usually focusing on just one process, but this one will demonstrate a range of ways to use one. I hope you will see that the treadle hammer is a VERY versatile tool. To learn more, go to my treadle hammer web page at:

Very informative. I was on the fence, having never having the opportunity to see one in person, but knowing I need a third hand, or a striker on demand...This has me sold. Thanks for taking the time to show all this. It is appreciated!

I purchased a treadle hammer this summer and thanks to your website now I have figured out how to create a portable hardy hole for many die uses. Good demonstration, just wish the visuals were a little clearer, but thank you very much for sharing!

Thank you for the video. I've been wondering on whether to start on a treadle or power...And I think I'll start with a treadle.

a pice of fabric/ denim around or though the center of the spring to reduce the noise, not that im expecting blacksmithn to be quite. the spring rattling is just as loud and more consistent than thw hammering, may only be the way the camera is picking up the sound . thank you for posting

Good demonstration but very hard to see with everything close around and light bulbs glaring into the camera. But still well worth watching.

Sweet treadle hammer. I'm just annoyed that your torch burns steady. Maybe consider an electronic ignition system and gas control valves for your 30 second burn cycles. Your cost savings could pay for the parts if this is something that you do to earn a living.

Sorry that my torch technique annoyed you. I don't run it that way normally. The focus of this video was to be on the Treadle Hammer, not the torch. I left it on because I didn't think viewers wanted to spend their time watching me relight the torch. I usually use either my coal forge or a gas forge. Others have a gas valve setup where the torch goes off when they hang it up. There's a small pilot flame right beside the torch tip on the stand with the valve. When one takes the torch off the hanger, the gas comes on and the torch is relit. I just don't want one of those. So, if I do need that feature, I simply light up my hardware-store propane torch, with the smallest flame I can get, and use that for a pilot. I do have to turn the torch valves on and off, but it works okay. -----But!!! I DO prefer the coal forge.

Frenchcreekvalley .frenchcreekvalley I meant no disrespect whatsoever. After watching the entire video I soon realized you were no slouch smith. Nice video and I will in the future avoid the semantics!

What is the finished weight of this hammer? Looking for one I can build to put on my trailer. Then I want to increase the weight and size for my shop.
@frenchcreekvalley
@frenchcreekvalley 6 жыл бұрын
I estimate its weight to be somewhere between 125 and 150 pounds. By the way, when I move it I always take that 67 pound head off, since it makes the hammer VERY top heavy. I remember at one project build where we completed 14 of them in one day, I told that to everyone. One guy decided he knew better. He put it on a package cart to take it to his truck and, of course, the head bobbed up and down a bit and then the whole thing went over on to the ground. Luckily no one was hurt.

Frenchcreekvalley thank you for the information. I think that will be great on the back of my trailer. I want a second one for the shop about twice as heavy.

I have been watching videos on different types of treadle hammers and I like your version of it the most , if I had to build one yours would be the best because of my space constrictions, how much with modern prices in materials do you think that I would have to spend to make this
