Lol this video came at the perfect time for me, I'm currently building my own treadle hammer from scratch. Traded a case of beer to a council worker for the damaged blade off their asphalt grader, the thing is huge and solid as heck so this is the perfect "proof of concept" i needed. now all i need is to finish the build and get forging

Roy you were giving good instructions to your assistant. Sometimes seeing other people work well together, gives you ideas of how to treat others while they're in your shop.

Man, that was a Hog! I'd say 4140, Curtis at Cutting Edge Engineering works on machining all kinds of heavy equipment. He would probably have a pretty good idea what its made of.

More than likely the steel is an abrasion resistant steel, not gonna guess on what alloy because that can vary wildly depending on the brand of dozer and how old the dozer was. I previously worked for a company that was an exclusive supplier for CAT, that’s all we made was a wide variety of parts just for CAT and given my experience there that’s what I’d guess the material was, same stuff is used for the dozer blades grader blades various excavator buckets and so on as it’s very tough stuff that’s durable but won’t really harden

Nice job for the treadle hammer. I have been a heavy steel fabricator most of my life, if you had a base larger than the part you were straightening life would have been a lot easier. Don't take this as a complaint, or finding fault, just a point of interest. 🤔🔥⚒

Thats a big chunk of steel Roy, the treadle did really well and got it mostly done! I love big steel, if I found that in scrap it would be hell yeh, how much! My son swinging the 16 pounder on my striking anvil we would manage it! My smaller forge though, maybe not!

Impressive effort and tool. The amount of heat pouring off that metal was incredible. Not only did it transfer to the anvil, it was burning the flatter handle as you worked it.

Great job! Lots of work to get that done! BTW…I saw you preheat an anvil. Mwa ha ha ha. It’d be interesting to see if the hardness changed.

It's really neat to see that hammer work the way it does. I'm impatient myself tho. If it had rose just 6 inches higher each strike I could see using it lol. Perhaps it works better than I can tell from the video tho 🤷‍♂️ but nice work guys, always enjoy watching!

Have you determined the striking force of your treadle hammer?
@farmerboy916
@farmerboy916 Жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s impressive that the treadle hammer was able to do this, especially in the current setup with a fairly short stroke. But that much coke to heat this up? I have got to wonder about ways to increase the efficiency of that if you’re working larger pieces more often

That's alot more impressive than when I tried straightening a bent piece of large propane tank steel cold with a skid loader bucket that didn't phase the bent piece I have. And it's about half as thick as your piece.
