Man, they were really hammering in how the _Spells_ are what makes a wizard what they are. I really thought we were going to get more examples of spells, or at very least spell rules, because there really wasn't much change to the base wizard class to talk about. Especially when he talked about the Abjurer, that would have been a perfect time to discuss any potential changes to counterspell, or given their Spell Breaker feature, about how Bonus Action spells will be treated in the rules now.
@feltrix3345 ай бұрын
They probably didn't talk about Counterspell because it's (probably) nerfed. If they are, in fact, letting you cast two leveled spells in a turn, this definitely would have been the time to break that out. Perhaps you can't cast the bonus action Dispel Magic if you've cast a leveled spell this turn?

Wizards with 2024 subclasses get 63 guaranteed spells now, plus any help the DM might provide. I really like this, I’d always have many doubts when considering which spells to choose CORRECTION - according to ddb, they only get the additional choices of spells when they get access to a new level of spell slot, so it would be 9 additional spells (2 on level 3 and 1 more on each odd level until 17, including) for 53 total spells known. I'd like it better if it were 63, but 53 isn't bad I guess
@josephrion35145 ай бұрын
So 9 additional spells with your 3 to 17 math. So 53-17. 36 prior to?
@lukesandadordoceu48355 ай бұрын
@@josephrion3514 I honestly don't understand what you're saying. You get 2 additional spells at 3rd level and after that it's 1 whenever you get access to a new level of spell slot, so only on odd levels (5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17), totaling 7 more spells, which makes for 9 additional spells, beside the 44 you get from being a wizard (6 at level 1 and 2 more every other level = 6 + 2*19 = 6 + 38 = 44), so 44 + 9 = 53

The Arcane Ward changes are really cool
@thiagoknofel89825 ай бұрын
The martial vs caster is still a thing, but i see some progretions. A thing that i think a lot is: Martials are a lot dependent of the abilities. If the spells was ajusted to use the characters stats and proficient bonuses, theyr progression could be smoothier btweeen the levels. To set an example thats is not overpower but bit too much in early levels, the pass whithout trace spell add +10 in stealth checks. If it adds wis bonus plus proficient bonus in stealth checks, It would start with something like +5 or +6 in the first tear, and ending up with +11 in hight levels. To mention the wizard, inteligence for shield spell adding +3 AC in the 1st level, up to +5 in the 8th. Other spells could be rebalanced to became less overpower but ajusted to been better upcasted. Using the fire ball example, could star in 6d6 damagewith upcast 2d6 per slot level above 3. The 5th spell slot level would still causes 10d6 (9th char level), but less overpower in the when you gain it (5th char level). To end up my point, other spells could be upcasted to bring more options that would make other playestyles surpass the "aways better way to play with this class". It makes the player decides where to invest its slots with more variaty. The Mage Armor Spell, for example, could be upcasted for +1 AC for every 2 levels above 1 (pretty sure that no one would think of uses a 9th level slot to put 17 AC in its wizard, but a 5 spell slot to 15 or something like that could be a good trade that made the aways used spells less frequent). The spells designe would make more variable casters and made theyr progression more in line with martials

The Lightly Armored feat really undid a lot of the good when it comes to the martial-caster divide, unless they nerfed it since the playtest.

Or 630 if you burn slots, also gives AC bonus. Fiend warlock: 15-360 extra hp/long rest. Give bonus to saves. And give damage resistance of your choice. Was late today! Took the kids and wife to the Zoo. Knew I’d be alright though because, I don’t need the stream. Chris breaks everything down perfectly!! Thank you for the wizard review!!!

Dear Host - as a 5e player who is very stoked to apply the rules update to games that I am in, is there any chance you are planning a video (one your embargo is over) where you spell out the structural rules folks need to know? Stuff like the changes to Inspiration, Surprise and so on? I really want to reduce the barrier to entry for my DMs. In particular I play an open hand monk, currently level 13, so I would love all of those goodies (or at least the ones that made it through from the playtest)!

YES. It will be one of my first (maybe my first)

Once the players handbook is released, will you be tier ranking the subclasses again? I’d love to see how they match up with all of the changes to the subclasses and their base classes.

Probably at some point, but for awhile I'm just going to go through all the new stuff.

Expert divination was really hamstrung by the lack of divination spell options, so I hope they filled out the divination spell list a bit more. I'm quite hopeful because I've been pleasantly surprised by how many times feedback I gave during the playtest was addressed in later playtests and the final product. My feedback for illusionist was about how the 1st and 6th level features didn't have any mechanical weight because their effects are all up to the DM's idea of how illusion spells work, and I'm excited to see that now we have both clear mechanical benefits at those levels as well as guidance on illusion spells themselves.

I am disappointed that the Abjurer did not get the same treatment that the the War Domain Cleric recieved (from playtest). Guided Strike and War God's Blessing from 2014 5E War dom were combined into 1 feature. Why wasn't Arcane Ward and Projected Ward combined into 1 feature? It's the same pool of hp whether it affects you or others. I feel like the Abjurer got a raw deal on this. They're effectively a feature short of other subclasses with a similar feature. EDIT: Also, is the bonus action spellcasting rule still in effect in 2024 5E? If it is, then then Dispel Magic as a bonus action is not necessarily all that significant. You get a cantrip or the Dodge or Disengage action.

Yeah, those two features were a good candidate for combining.

Sad not to see spellcraft making the cut, that feature truly felt like the core that they missed, maybe in a lesser form like getting the ability to change a spell once at a certain level or several points in progression

As someone who is excited to get socks and underwear for christmas because that means I don't have to buy them with my gift money, I was pleased as punch to see the evoker changes from the playtest mostly went over. That plus the new savant, memorize spell and scholar features are really all I need. i mean... I'll just buy whatever else i want with the gift money, in the wizard's case, that being all those spells we get over the other classes. and new spells to boot...~

The most interesting thing happened to the Diviner was BG3, which IIRC gave them "Expert Divination" a short rest "prophecy" like "an enemy will die from falling" "or use the help action" And if the diviner successfully engineered that outcome they recharged a Portent Die! That to me screams out for a d20 table such properties. I just hope they get more relevant divination spellls for all levels. The 2014 PHB its like the authors forgot half way up the spell tables that Divination exists!

I hope the text you put on screen for Memorize Spell isn't the final draft. It says nothing about "swapping" a spell (like Jeremy said) or un-preparing anything - it just says you can pick a spell and have it prepared. Essentially, that wording gives you one extra spell you can prepare, and THEN you can swap that extra spell to a different one.

I wonder how much the reclassification of spells to Abjuration is a buff to Clockwork Magic, which can get it's replacements from that school. How much do you think so, if you are comfortable sharing, Chris?
@TreantmonksTemple5 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, I am not since Clockwork magic is in the PHB and I can't reveal any mechanics of that subclass in the new book.

I can't wait to see what kind of advice they give DMs to adjudicate illusionist's illusions. Hopefully it's something helpful. I would like to see more people play this subclass and maybe now they will.

I really like the new version of the savant spells, for especially loaded spell levels like 3rd and 4th it means that you won't be a divination wizard who feels out of luck because what wizard in their right mind would take clairvoyance or tongues at level 5 when fireball, counterspell, dispel magic, hypnotic pattern, fear, and fly all become available at the same time. One question I have about the evoker is if potent cantrip would apply to booming blade, green flame blade, and (assuming it's the same as or similar to the playtest) true strike? because if it does a 3 level dip into evoker for an eldritch knight seems like it would be a very worthwhile endeavor, the cantrips which will be doing way more damage than they would with a wizard because you'll be using magic weapons and which will be used commonly even through much higher levels feels like a much better version of the graze mastery because you'll just be getting way more damage out of it
