@@Oscuros You are absolutely correct. I constantly get asked weather or not I've read Treasure Island when I go to job interviews. When I reply that I have not, the interviewer's face turns sorrowful, a single tear falls from their eye, and they say "Lo, you who would have been a perfect candidate, thou could have been our savior, for truly, the diversity of your expertise stood as a beacon of hope to our failing company. But alas! Thou art no savior! Thou art the lesser of all men; even maggots are to you as a king is to a flea! For thou have not read Treasure Island! Treasure Island was a syllabus book I first encountered at school. It's been served in film and cartoon format over the years and is a great story but I've never heard it brought so vividly to life nor with such flare and artistic skill as in this version by Greg Wagland. The accents of the characters and the consistency with which each character is sustained throughout the story is a marvel to hear and the way he maintains the dialogue brings all the characters to life and makes you feel they are all real and present as if you were actually there yourself. Poor old Ben Gunn. He was marooned for several years, found and dug up Flint's treasure, virtually provisioned the first leg of the return journey, and only ended up with £1,000 out of £700,000 for a his troubles. Simple math dictates that, estimating they spent £100,000 on the crew and provisions from the Spanish Caribbean port to Bristol and Gunn's stipends, that left the rest to divide the remaining £600,000. Frankly, they should have given him more and invested in a cheese factory in his name. "Benjamin Gunn & Sons Cheese Works" has kind of a nice ring to it!

I do not mean to sound corny or funny when I say that I say that with the greatest respect and admiration I don't even bother to listen to the other narrations the only one I would listen to would be Edward hardwicke on Sherlock. But no one can touch you you will never know the pleasure you have given me and listening to your stories and your narrations. You probably think I'm some old fanatic, but you really ARE a wonderful narrator. With a different things that you can do with your voice to portray the different characters the numerous different characters, to me is incredible.I can't keep track how many times I've told you this but I still have to keep telling you from time to time. I gotta admit, I prefer the audiobook version in my native language, because the narrator is so lively and gives more character to the story and it is the version I grew up with -but listening to this in the original English is very pleasant as well. One of my favorite stories of all time, always exciting and thoughtful. I first read the book whe I was ten and had listened to it countless time since age six. I still listen to this at least 5 times a year. Treasure Island never gets boring. It is a pity it is often labeled a children's book although it would make great university level reading: it is a moral story in an adventure's guise.

Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (13 November 1850 - 3 December 1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist, musician and travel writer. His most famous works are Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and A Child's Garden of Verses. Stevenson was a literary celebrity during his lifetime, and now ranks as the 26th most translated author in the world. His works have been admired by many other writers, including Jorge Luis Borges, Bertolt Brecht, Marcel Proust, Arthur Conan Doyle, Henry James, Cesare Pavese, Emilio Salgari, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling, Jack London, Vladimir Nabokov, J. M. Barrie, and G. K. Chesterton, who said that Stevenson "seemed to pick the right word up on the point of his pen, like a man playing spillikins".

Its so interresting the things that make it into adaptations that arent in the book. The Admiral Benbow doesnt get burned down. Mister Arrow and the Captain dont like eachother, despite them usually being a sort if character duo in film adaptations, with a preexisting repore. Jim and Johns relationship is good but its not Father Son strong like it is in a lot of versions. Jim isnt an orphan, nor did his dad leave. Im not saying these adaptations are bad. Ive never seen an adaptation I didnt like, they just found subtext they liked, like class distinctions or Fatherhood, and empasised these with plot points they liked. Its just intriguing.

My dad used to read me this book as a child in the 90s before bed! It's still one of my favourite books!
Remember many, many years ago, school fancy dress, my brothers & I dressed as the pirate crew from Treasure Island, my eldest brother was Long John Silver, remember wrapping silver foil around the buttons of his coat, he used my grand fathers walking stick!🤩

Silver foil. What a boon to imaginative dress up!

As you listen for greater amounts of time, the way they speak makes more sense. Why doesn't everybody talk like this?

My favorite part of this book is probably Israel Hands part. The Blind Man however always creeped me out the way it is described in the book.

I’m a dyslexic draughtsman I have no reading problems but after a days work in front of a screen an audiobook is perfect for tired eyes.

Thank you Mr. Wagland. I hope a recording of pirate songs is forthcoming.

@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Ready or not, it will be groundbreaking. I think particularly a duet between Ben Gunn and Captain Flint (the parrot) would be a smashing success, followed by more hits sung by Billy Bones.
