I made this a while ago. Just basically "expirementing". It's just putting a bunch of clips from the movie Treasure Planet and putting the song "I'm still here" in the background. Well, hope you like it. =)

Fucking SAME. God I wish they had the balls to do something like this again. Not a sequel, cuz most Disney sequels notoriously suck, but something like it. A brand new spin, on an old as dust tale. I wish they would utilize deep canvas again. I wish for a simpler time, when this was revolutionary. I want them to put a new spin on so many old classics. Instead of just making sequels, or remakes, or taking something out of the vault for the "super mega ultra diamond platinum edition, with ultra hd, even though it doesn't make the movie look or sound all that much better". I want them to take medieval tales, and bring em up to modern standards, or futuristic ones. I want the creativity behind this GREAT film to come back into Disney films again. I mean, come on, who thinks treasure island, and says "hitchhikers guide"? Fuckin nobody anymore.

For the most part, the animation was slightly different from what most people were used to at the time. If memory serves, it mixed traditional animation with a little computer based. Pair that with the sci fi theme and you have a truly unique movie. The same could be said of the movie Atlantis as well. They were released before the sci fi theme became larger. Since then, the overall mindset has changed. Imo, if they were recreated and released today, I think it would do far better.

Well I can tell you why it hit me so hard. Life is basically us wanting to be spontanious, and sometimes people will try to wear us down, but you strain to get out of their judgmental eyes. And if you are not dealing with them, you are dealing with ones that are careless. In the end, you want to scream at the world and tell them "I'm still here".

+Regan Robinson, our favorite songs may be our favorites because we connect with it weather we are aware of it or not. This particular song sends messages to a broad audience abandoned kids, young people with no father figure finding one, people fighting even when they feel no one believes in them or even not believing on themselves. People fighting prejudice. And many more interpretations. Disney is good making themes relatable on many levels for different people.

Because this movie was going against a wizard boy and his friends (Harry Potter). I love this movie it's just a shame that critics said that it was part in the dark disney era.
@Xynth227 жыл бұрын
3 reasons. 1. It came out at a bad time, which also happened to be during a dip in Disney's popularity. 2. It didn't get a lot of advertisement either. 3. It lacked continued support from Disney like they do with the really popular movies or Disney Princess movies. So, all in all, while the movie was great, and one of my personal favorites, it sort of flew under the radar for most people.

The reason why Big Hero 6 was awesome was because they have the same producers as Treasure Planet. And Yes Treasure Planet is underrated and dare I say Frozen is Overrated. Treasure Planet's animation was brilliant and its soundtrack is pretty awesome and relatable, they got John Rzenik to sing 2 songs in this movie, how awesome is that. Tbh i would rather watch a sequel (which was sadly cancelled) of Treasure Planet than Frozen. Don't get me wrong, Frozen is pretty good but Treasure Planet is much better.

Charissa Lim The problem is, is that treasure planet would have to have a fully original story for a sequel. The movie is based off the book Treasure Island, a short novel about a young lad in the 17th century competing with his old pirate friend for loot.

LovatoLover22 Disney has a separate studio make the sequels. The studio is called Toon Disney the makers of the Tinker Bell and Planes films. Tro Cavanagh Compared to the rest of the Disney movies, stuff like Hunchback of Notre Dame, Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Rescuers, Great Mouse Detective, and Oliver + Company are fairly underrated. Ask anybody about their favorite Disney movie and its gonna be either a recent movie (Tangled/Frozen) or a Disney Renaissance/Princess movie (Aladdin, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, etc). Even then I think the only Princess movie that fell under the radar was the Princess and the Frog.

Taking "Treasure Island" and turning it into the fantastic version that is "Treasure Planet" was a daring and fantastic feat of writing and animating. Plus take into account that "Treasure Island" was and is not a "normal and tame" piece of children or young adult oriented literature. Still is controversial, i think. Besides, the creativity that went into this! Just look at that sky surfing and that story book the protagonist is reading! Marvelous!

Lsa F your right this movie's screenplay shows true creativity and inspiration. How the pair that made this created moana is beyond me. I was glad when zootopia won best animated instead of moana. Zootopia showed a lot creativity as well. If someone ten years ago said that disney would do a animated crime thriller they would have been laughed at. Much less one that openly references the godfather and breaking bad.

The real reason this film and Atlantis was classified as underrated wasn't because of the story. They were deemed to dark for Disney and got blacklisted because of it. It actually has nothing to do with the actual films themselves so much what's in them.

I have taken some time to think about this. But here is my conclusion. I am happy that this movie was, is, and will always be, underrated. That critics gave it shit, and that it dropped off the Mainstream spotlight with haste. That helps it in the long run. How? Longevity of charm and value. It doesn't spoil it, ruin it, or kill it. At least, not to us. :) Which is worth it to you? The brilliant raging forest fire or bonfire? With its magnificent, blaring, loud, awesome ferocity, attracting massive crowds, given pictures, videos and attention, that is snuffed and gone within a matter of days? Or the dim, quiet, calm, content little candlelight, surrounded by just a few content people? That, while timid and small in form and in attention, keep their charm, their light, their warmth, for all of us to share _indefinitely..._ If you ask me? I choose the candlelight. I can enjoy it's warmth for decades to come, provided i treat it right. As can we all. Frozen was rediculously popularized. It was hyped, merchandised, and made known to all but the most iscolated individuals. EVERYONE who lives in a first world nation knows something about Frozen. I dont think there is a sane minded person in said nations that enjoy hearing "Let it Gooooooo" everywhere they go anymore. I know i sure as hell cant. There's spoiling music, but Frozen took it to a whole new level with me. Now lets hypothesize for a moment here. Let's say Frozen and TP switched roles. Replace the sound of "Let it Gooooooo!" With "I'm still heeeeeeeeere!" Imagine all the kids singing that.... All the toys spouting that...all the tv commercials popularizing it, and using it in their advertisements. All the parodies, the sing-alongs, the christmas toys, and God knows what else. Can you imagine what that would mean for us? The idea that a movie as incredible as this one is beyond-spoiled rotten to the point where NO ONE wants to hear it anymore? Or see it, or think of it? With how well made and overall wonderful this movie is, the very thought is nightmare fuel for me...as i hope it would be to all of us. This is a hard fact to accept for many, but my years of underground music have helped me understand it in a more fitting perspective. It's not the quantity of a movie, or it's fans. But the quality. All the mainstreamers have been weeded out. And like the song suggests, we true fans are all still here. And always will be. These wonderfull movies are usually better off underrated in my humble opinion. Lest they get popular, monetized, merchandized, and eventually corrupted with sequals, spin offs, parodies, cartoons, and other such undesirable parphenillia. Im glad Treasure Planet was left relatively untouched in that regard. And i hope it stays that way. This movie has little to need for a sequal. The only thing i would like to see is Silver and Hawkins meet again. Thats it. And i can let my imagination do that one. This movie is ours, and ours alone, fellow spacers and space pirates. Our own Treasure to share amongst ourselves, our families, and each other. And hopefully, and more importantly, one we will be doing so with for a very, *very* long time.

I agree with you 100%! That's the NIICE thing about underrated movies. And the sad thing about movies like Frozen. I'm fairly certain that I would have loved Frozen twice as much if it hadn't become so popular. I'm partial to musicals and Idina Menzel, but I'd already heard all the songs and had the plot ruined for me before I even got to watch it, plus I've been smothered with "Let it Go" ever since. Good movies can be ruined by too much attention.

Destroy anything that distracts you or forgets your younger self. Such as world news, social media, bad people. They will turn you into one of them. Do not let them take you. #3. Most Disney sequels are really bad compared to the original and as the first did badly they'd probably only invest a tiny amount of money into it in the hypothetical scenario it was created. Considering that any sequel is likely to be awful so it's probably best that we just fondly remember the one we have and let the movie rest.

I was in the 1st-2nd grade when this movie came out. I was OBSESSED with the music and used to sing it all the time in class. My teachers thought I was going through some shtuff because of the deep ass lyrics. What happened disney? When did "let it go" and endless tinker bell movies become more meaningful and memorable than shit like this? THIS has to be one of THE MOST underrated disney movies there is. Some people have never seen this master piece but are willing to fight you over how frozen breaks barriers......

I agree wholeheartedly that this is a very underrated movie, however, Frozen is the first Disney movie (that I can remember) that portrayed depression. I do think that it's been totally blown out of proportion, but it is still a good Disney movie in my opinion :)

Too bad 1 of the 3 execs at Disney got butthurt and spread lies that it was a bad film. That's also why Disney stopped making the "young adult" movies that were prevalent during the late 90's and early 2000's.
@chelseamcneely36318 жыл бұрын
What happened was during this time it was the studio in Florida that was considered the backup studio that made this movie and The Emperors New Groove, Atlantis, and a few others because the main studio was working with Pixar on 3-D animation movies and told the studio they could do whatever before Disney completely stopped doing 2-D animation movies. A lot of the worker then got hired at Dreamworks studio.

+Mickey Holm I agree with everything you just said exept for big hero 6. That was one of the few "New Generation" disney movies I watched that was actually good. That and both How To Train Your Dragon movies, if their even related to disney. I honestly don't remember.
@MichaelHolmgaard8 жыл бұрын
Colin McLaren To Train Your Dragon isn't Disney, but Big Hero is. Maybe I should give Big Hero another chance, but I thought it was a good movie, but I just have a hard time accepting the 3d animated movies as "true disney". Disney was founded on the foundation of drawing, and I think they loose the magic without it :/
@lorrosdorborin47908 жыл бұрын
True, but the edition of 3D kind of opens it all up to avenues of the "Magic" present in the original movies that cant be experienced in 2D.

For some reason when I was growing up, I always sort of just learned towards this movie, spirit, and Prince of Egypt. Since I'm older now I'm start to realize WHY I was so obsessed with Treasure Planet. I identified with it, seeing a kid in a movie who's dad walked out on him and the struggles of coming to age really hit me hard. I could relate to Jim better than I could any other main character in Disney movies, being the delinquent while also having to provide for his family and deep down wanting that father figure..

What's unique about this is that the characters are real - relatable. Their problems were real, were our problems. For example, when the cyborg guy was choosing between saving the protagonist and keeping the treasure - his dilemma was believable. It was believable that his character was really having a crisis. Unlike say, I- really don't know what they're showing nowadays. Also, I think it's because this has a vibe for the introvert, unlike today where most kid shows are about extroverted characters. Maybe it comes with the ease of connection these days? I don't think there are anymore introverted children - ambiverts at most. ??? lol haha
@jonathandahlberg4378 жыл бұрын
I agree fully. The writers of this movie *really* knew how to build up characters with real motivations and personalities. They felt like real people, rather than just cartoon characters. I also think movies (especially kids movies) should focus more on introverted people. I mean, extroverts are already familiar and comfortable in the world by their very nature. But introverts will never feel comfortable in a world where they never fit in.
@jeromejoz59358 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Thank you for putting it that way. The build up, real motivations and personalities. Today's cartoon characters are derivative. Archetypes easy to identify, overused. I don't think the kid in me, nor the kid I was, would've identified with any of the characters today.

Sad but true, when I was young this movie spoke to me like no other movie ever did or has since. It literally changed my life. My parents divorced when I was young and my father moved across the country. I didn't see him much and it was a difficult time. A few years on and this movie comes out. I was on the edge of getting kicked out of school, I was angry and a loner. After watching this movie my outlook changed so much. In many ways I've got a lot to thank this movie for. I love this film, it's such a shame it's so underrated along with other Disney gems like Atlantis the Lost Empire. Simply because when they were released the public didn't like them because they didn't follow the Disney formula of that time which was the princess fairytale. If they had been created and shown now they probably would have been a bigger success.
@mrmoviemanic18 жыл бұрын
+Alex Burton Screw it. People love it, Treasure Planet is the kid in Disney school sitting by himself and playing his video game trying to get by in Life. And guess what, that kid is someone special that kids, adults and anyone can connect to. It doesn't matter if he wasn't the popular kid like Aladdin, or Frozen. He made his place in a lot of peoples memory's and hearts and has probably inspired more than just a good time for some. Every Disney cartoon has there place in the world, and I think it's ok to say I haven't ever truly despised a Disney cartoon as all of them have important lessons that no matter how old you get, they can still be retold like farytales ;)

wow back when Disney actually had a meaning. It cuts deep when he talks about his dad. My parent have undoubtedly forgot me and I have gotten over it. But when Im road tripping and getting drunk with my buds and this song comes on due to shuffle. I blare the fuck out of it. They dont understand why, but I do. CAUSE "IM STILL HERE" AND "You dont know me and ill never be what you want me to be" Id do anything to shake the hand of this artist. Just to let him know how much this song has helped me get through those long night

Godamn this is the story of my life… being a trouble maker due to the absence of love or a father figure. Having a single mom who couldn’t handle my “behavior”. Then meeting a “mentor “ who turned out to be a complete lie.. this movie has a special place in my heart. Always.

I honestly love this movie, and each and every second of it. It's my most favourite Disney movie of all times. And now I have only one question: Why did his father leave him? I mean.. what was his reason?
@franzferdinand5910 жыл бұрын
never explicitly stated. implied dad didn't want responsibility of a family and walked out (seems dismissive of jim and like he's always working). maybe a divorce *shrug* I get the feeling Disney didn't want to get into the why's of Jim's dad's absence (loving, dead parents are more up their alley).

I think in the source material Treasure island Jim's father actually dies. But it is left to the persons imagination in this movie. Which is realistic and not knowing serves the plot better in my opinion the point is why he got abandoned it is that he got abandoned and found a father figure in long John Silver
@ReMexXxXx10 жыл бұрын
franzferdinand59 i think they just wanted to show how silver is giving jimbo all those things what his dad didnt. like the nickname:Jimbo.. all the things he taught him, fights, sharing experience, disagreements and stuff.. but its just my opinion
@MinockerSpanichle9 жыл бұрын
I figured Jim's father was always out working on some voyage like a sailor, and eventually decided to leave for the last time because he was probably not home enough already. It might've become pointless to him to keep coming back to a wife he didn't love more than his job, and Jim was just "there" without him interested.

I didn't watch this movie until two years ago, when I was fifteen, and I really loved how Captain Amelia was a smart, sharp woman who wasn't afraid of risking it all and of speaking her mind. Her line "but I won't bore you with my scars" really hooked me onto her character. Why do some good movies, with strong women, have to be underrated while movies like Twilight, with...whatever the heck Bella Swan is, get the spotlight?
@demetriaduma62189 жыл бұрын
+heatherjasper97 but.....the film is about Jim and Silver not Amelia?

Everyone says this movie was underrated. Under-advertised maybe, but people liked this movie. It was nominated for the academy award for best animated picture for Pete's sake, and it lost to Spirited Away fair and square. Look, I love this movie, and I think this version of Silver is quite possibly my favorite (which means a lot from a fan of the book and various stage adaptions), but it was under-advertised at the time, and thus it under-preformed at the box office. That doesn't mean for one second people didn't like it, and the academy nom is enough to show that I should think. So quit your complaining, and maybe do something productive, like get into social and political debates on other youtube videos about abortion, Obamacare, and vaccines *heavily laced sarcasm*

Treasure Planet failed because Disney wanted it to fail. Treasure Planet was the last 2D film Disney did. They weren't interested in old school animation anymore, they were headed into the computer and 3D era. They deliberately under advertised the film and then the trailers they released told the whole story of the movie. Disney wanted it to flop as an excuse to leave 2D animation behind. And it worked.

As far as I can see here, Jim grew up with his father hardly around so no role model. Until he met Long John Silver who's a father to Jim and I find that excellent. After all, every boy needs a father figure.

It was revealed in a interview they would do a direct to video sequel for it and TV series. Some ppl will hate me but thank god it didn't. Most of the direct to video sequels sucked imo and it was obvious cash grab attempt Disney tried to do at the time. For TV series they done like kuscos new school, timon and pumba, lilo and stitch series were not too bad but same time were not that good either. Always find it odd for timon and pumba episodes where they take place. Side tracking here: at that time Cartoon Network dominated TV with good cartoons and Disney tried to compete with them too but came 3rd with nickelodeon 2nd. It was until shows like Kim possible, proud family and such got much more ppl to their channel then previous shows they done. Only notable Disney shows I can think of in the 90s as a kid was gargoyles, tailspin, ducktales and even bonkers. Disney had huge advantage in films during 90s but most of their shows started lacking in late 90s and early twenty hundreds.
@monamidv80968 жыл бұрын
+dungeonmaster16 I want a sequel, I do. But not TV series. I think it will mostly get boring if it gets a series of its own. I realized that maybe the reason for their downfall was because the storyline targets teenagers not kids. And kids composed most of Disney's audience. But imagine if the sequel was about Jim meeting his dad? Wouldn't it be great?? Maybe his dad was suddenly a great captain or whatever. I was just really disappointed with the fact that this is underrated. Well, we can never change what's been written in history now.

This should never get a sequel. It was great, and I wouldn't want a sequel to ruin it. Jim got over the loss of his dad and found him self, it was awesome. Also, his Dad left very suddenly, and never returned. It scarred both Jim and his mother, and it is implied he never returned because he was dead.

Isnt John Silver one of the more complex Disney characters..might not be saying a lot but still..his dialogue probably goes over the head of many kids too. Like how he tries to flatter the captain, not only is he a little fake but doing a decent job of coming off as not fake cuz he's also a really smooth talker using old fashioned words and expressions.

I agree. I was 15 when this was first released back in 2002, I think this was pretty much at the end of the golden age of hand-drawn animation, I don't consider it up there with the greatest Disney creations I grew up with in the 90's like The Lion King or Aladdin, or earlier works like The Jungle Book, but I do agree it's an underrated film that has some beautiful animation, a wonderful steam-punk kinda storyline and likeable characters. It just didn't find its audience at the time.

@GamerGeek201210 жыл бұрын
Alright let me try and explain this using general Sci-fi mumbo jumbo. In order to stand on their boat in space without falling off, I'd imagine they'd need an artificial gravity generator. This would simulate the gravity sufficient to give them enough height while jumping while simultaneously making sure they don't just float off. This, combined with the artificial atmosphere generator, creates a bubble of sorts surrounding the ship. If they fell off the side of the ship, the AGG would still pull them down. However the generator wouldn't be naturally strong enough to slow enough of their momentum so they would stick to the underside of the ship, and so they would just fall out of the bubble into the gravity-less void of space. When two ships come withing the vicinity of one another, their bubbles will link, giving them safe passage, should they desire to jump to the enemy ship. Satisfied now motherfucker?
@supersonic49410 жыл бұрын
GamerGeek2012 Um what about when the captain fell off the ship into the black hole? He shouldnt have been able to scream or fall so slowly, a black hole would have sucked him instantly
