I've used vitreous tile in my earliest days -when I was rank beginner, partly out of ignorance but also because they were cheaper. Having said that, I agree that grout in the pits has a look of its own and it can add to some mosaics sort of in the sense of "texture". Although I'm not wealthy, I try to afford better quality tiles these days - and they are certainly not all the same quality even if different suppliers stock similar colours. I buy better quality now so I don't have to think about it or do more work to clean. But there is one inescapable fact - that is, if you really don't like the grout in the pits of vitreous tiles - then you're more or less snookered - because there is next to no chance of getting it out afterwards and grouting itself will wash off anything you try to put on the surface of the tile to protect it anyway. If you had to use harsher chemicals than vinegar - then the cost of those will negate the low cost of the tile so it becomes pointless to use them, I believe if you dont like that look. I think beginners or people on a budget can still get lots of out of them though - I did, it was a learning curve yes. I for one have long moved on from them, though I have shown kids how to cut and nip my residual stocks - its a good use for them. Thanks Peter, this is yet another worthwhile video . Helps others avoid disappointment after a lot of work - as mosaics usually are!

Thanks so very much Wendy. You are correct and l also used them as well starting out l didn’t know about the grout in the pits. This is why l made the video so that people will be more informed especially newbies when they go to purchase them they won’t be surprised or disappointed that grout is in the pits. Some retailers do not mention this in the product description which is fair enough but l think customers would appreciate it if they did. Thanks so much for a great comment and for watching the video. 😊

You're funny! So glad that no tiles were harmed! This was a very helpful video. My motto is work smarter, not harder; so I would not use pitted tiles if I was going to grout. Thanks for doing this experiment.

I find an earbud dipped into vinegar allows you to work at the specific area where you need to remove grout without impacting adjacent areas.

Thanks for the suggestion. That may help but it’s quite time consuming to go over every tile and if you have a reasonable size mosaic but it would probably help removing the worst grout areas in the pits. Also using straight vinegar isn’t advisable on grout. Appreciate the comment and Thankyou for watching. 😊

I have tended to avoid pitted tiles to date I think. Do you think it would have been any better if you had used epoxy grout? Thanks for making this video as a picture is worth a thousand words and I will continue to try and avoid pitted tiles!

Thankyou so much Julie so glad you enjoyed the video. That's a very good point about the epoxy grout and I think I will do a video on that with the pitted tiles and see how they clean up. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

I have heard other people doing that and in some cases it worked and in others it didn’t because the wash came off when grouting. I personally haven’t done it. I really like the look of the smooth tiles better but that’s a personal preference. Let me know how you go and thanks for the comment. 😊
