I can’t speak for everyone’s experience but here’s mine. I’ve had lanap done twice. I had bad periodontal disease with very red gums and bone loss at 30 years old. First round of lanap made my gums go from red to pink with in a few weeks it was pretty amazing. However.. during the procedure about half way through it started hurting quit a bit. My whole jaw on the side he was working on started aching and I requested shot after shot it Anastasia. The aching did go away fairly quickly with in a few hours and healing time was fairly quick with not too much pain I started eating regular food a couple days faster than reccomend and the only pain I really had at that point is if I ate cold or hot food. The lanap did wonders for my gum health but it didn’t reduce my pocket size much at all. I have very deep pockets all the way from 5’s to 10’s. Every following dentist visit I had he said the pockets were still very deep. Fast forward about 5-6 years later and the dentist recommends the lanap again. My gum tissue remained fairly pink since the first treatment but dentist was mostly concerned about pocket size. There was also like two areas in my mouth that had a little bit of puss. I got the lanap on my upper jaw about 11 days ago and there has been a lot more pain involved this time. Not only did I feel like I got punched multiple times in the jaw after the procedure ( and during) but the healing process has been way worse this time. Lots of aching pain that’s mostly gone away now but was very bad until a few days ago. I still can’t eat anything that’s much over room temperature or else it makes my teeth feel like there gonna explode it hurts like hell. Dentist said earlier this week everything’s fine and there’s gonna be some pain for a little while. I decided if I can’t eat somewhat normally 3 days from now which will be 2 full weeks since the procedure that I’m gonna cancel getting the bottom portion done as half as only been done for this second round. I’ve read some things that say it’s mostly painless and I just don’t understand that. Maybe for someone who’s pockets aren’t that bad but this procedure has hurted like hell for me to the point where I wish I had painkillers some days. I recommend having lanap done by a qualified dentist but if your pockets are really bad like mine are then I think you can expect a fair amount of pain especially during the procedure. I had literally about 20 shots and could still feel the intense aching all the way to the roots of my teeth.

I have just had my deep clean 5 days ago and one of my pockets was 11, needless to say, that tooth is a little wobbly and the pain is killing me. I too don't understand why some say it's not so painful. I hurt during the procedure, which was done in two consecutive days, and am still in pain now. Am going back to the dentist in a month to see if I am healing. In the meantime, am brushing, flossing and oil pulls.

I'm 30 and just got my all back quadrants done except my left bottom. I was under 5 for each pocket except one 7. It's only been an hour since the procedure, but everything seems decently pain free. Sore for sure, but not enough for me to want anything more than a Tylenol and a nap 😅

Update. It's now been almost 2 months. My gums look much better. Only a smidgen of gum regrowth. Nothing too visible, but I'm sure it'd be better if I brushed more often in the mornings. Night time brushing I'm less rushed and can really do it great. Take care of yalls teeth!

This surgery made my gums recede even more, even in areas that were not problematic. Gum is now missing from areas where there once was gum, creating gaps and areas of recession that now are prone to staining from smoking, tea, coffee, and blueberries. The surgery cost me approximately $3000, and I sooo regret it. Now they are telling me to go see an endodontist to get dentures for teeth that I just paid $3000 to get cleaned? I was told by the perio prior to the surgery 'good luck finding a dentist who will pull them', so I was led to believe this laser surgery was my only option. I don't even want to give my 'half upper smile' now. They ruined tops and buttoms. I look in the mirror now and mourn. To make matters worse, after leaving I felt this thick, rough coating on the backs of my two upper front teeth. I wasn't sure what it was, but it disappeared, and after it had healed, I feel what I can only describe as 'bugs bunny teeth'. He must've held the laser on too long or was inadvertently aiming is at the backs of my front teeth while working on another area, essentially burning healthy gum tissue away. My advice, don't do it.

I just got my lanap surgery done two weeks ago. I also do notice a little bit of gum loss and gaps between my teeth, but I think so far that the surgery was well worth it. My smile looks better, and I just need to keep up with good oral hygiene habits because I didn't have the best. Thank God, I still have all my teeth, and I gave up smoking cigarettes! The surgery cost about 4000, but thanks to great insurance through my job, they paid 100% so I'm very grateful and thankful for this procedure.

This procedure is quick and easy for on tooth I just had it today and it hurts a little but the same as getting a numbing shot. To be prepared for this make sure you have some mints to put in your mouth afterwards and water because the laser creates a bad taste in your mouth. It’s not bad, your gum will get sore later on but I’m okay.

@@biglex3300 Thanks for your reply Lex. Two thousand per quadrant... WOW, that's a lot of money. Its a coincident I also had deep tooth cleaning yesterday, but not the LANAP treatment. I did a lot of research in my part of the country and there are not lot of dentist who offer LANAP. I finally gave up on the idea and settled for deep cleaning with a Periodontist. I asked her if she was aware of LANAP treatment and what she thought about it. She knew of it but her feedback was not encouraging to me. I have a very hard time dealing with dentist I can trust, as their expertise, fees, opinion about treatments can vary so much. Good luck Lex and all the very best to you also.

Thank you for responding to the video! There has been extensive research on LANAP and other laser procedures as one treatment option for gum and periodontal disease. You can check out some of the published research at the link below. scholar.google.com/scholar?q=LANAP+research&hl=en&as_sdt=0&as_vis=1&oi=scholart There are also published articles of research completed on other types of laser treatment. The most recent one was published in the Journal of Periodontology and the American Academy of Periodontology that our very own Dr. Gregory A. Toback took part in. aap.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/JPER.20-0028 Lasers are an incredibly effective solution for periodontal disease treatment and the best part is these treatment options typically don't require cutting or stitching up the gums like traditional periodontal treatment! Feel free to read through it and reach out if you have any questions at all! We're always happy to help in any way we can! 860.443.2428

Hi Amanda! While we do offer a few different sedation options including IV and oral sedation, we don't require it for this procedure. Many patients actually opt to not be sedated for LANAP since there are no incisions needed, but it is always left up to the patient to decide their level of comfort with their chosen treatment. Is it required to have teeth removed prior to the LANAP? I am considering this procedure rather than the traditional R&S… my dentist wants to remove teeth that aren’t bothering me. I do understand that there is a possibility that years down the line the tooth may begin to harass 😅me , however with theLANAP procedure , I’m hoping that this can be avoided … I want to save my teeth at all cost.

Hi Tasha, the best person to ask these questions to is the professional who is performing the procedure. In our experience, there is no discomfort during the procedure and minimal healing time afterwards. Our patients often return to work the following day, but again, every patient is different and you need to ask your dental professional what their recommendations are for your post-op healing and restrictions.

It is painful AF. If you want to make lots of teeth prepare for multiple injections which is a terrible experience and after that prepare to feel burning sensations because gums can never be fully numbed. The smoke and smell is horrible and the burning and pain after numbness wears off is bad. Whoever claims this is not painful is lying.
