Treating a 15 mm Limb Length Discrepancy with a Full Sole Lift and Orthoses with a Unilateral Heel Lift
Here is a patient that was experiencing knee pain from her 15 mm limb length discrepancy, with the left side being longer than the right. I prescribed a 6 mm (1/4") full sole lift to be added into the right shoe sole along with a 6 mm heel lift added to her right custom foot orthosis. Her left custom foot orthosis had no heel lift added to it. You can clearly see the change in gait dynamics from her walking in her sock feet versus walking with a 12 mm correction of extra limb length added to the right shoe.
At the time of this video, she had been wearing the shoe and heel lift for about three weeks and was not experiencing any knee pain that had been bothering her before the shoe and heel lifts were added to her short right limb. As far as I know, she is still asymptomatic.
My patient was happy to have her gait filmed in my office and made available online for the education of podiatrists around the world so that they might better help their own patients with similar difficulties.
