The symptoms seem like normal toddler or preschool behaviors: picky eating, tantrums over what clothes to wear and clumsiness. But for some children extreme sensitivity to certain things can be explained by sensory processing disorder, or SPD. WSJ's Sumathi Reddy joins Lunch Break to discuss. Photo: iStock

I think what she means is adults have more options and abilities to address and manage it then kids do. I don’t think she intended it to come across as if some adults don’t struggle a normal day to day life.

If anyone is interested there is a book called "The Out of Sync Child." This book has opened my eyes to my child is perceiving the world and has allowed me to understand that these kids need more help than your average bear. Lots of times it might seem like the kid is lazy, or too hyper, or that our kids are off and that tbey're being stubborn. Truth is that they're not always faking it. If you see your little one struggling, sometimes it's not because they don't want to, it's because they CAN'T and need MORE practice than a normal kid. The book explains this stuff in so much detail and gives you a good sense of the systems involved with sensory processing. Reading the book, you'll discover just HOW MUCH WE TAKE FOR GRANTED, and helps you understand that your child isn't seeing things the way you're seeing them, no matter how trivial it might be. Sorry for the wall of text, but I would encourage every parent that is having issues that their child's doctors and teachers can't quite nail down to read this book. It's so helpful and it's given me so much more empathy and understanding towards my little one. Hope this helps.

Hi. Thanks a lot for the recommendation. I am researching for my 2.5 years old daughter. She is very sensetive to most fabrics touching her lower belly area. She seriously objects wearing knickers and trousers. Sometimes even choose not to go to park or have ice cream etc so that she doesn't have to wear knickers or pants. At night she rejects any sort of cover, even when she feels so cold. She doesn't fake it. I can feel she's suffering. Sometimes at night when we put a cover on her, even something so light and soft, she still jumps up and complains. It is so hard to deal with it especially in winter. Do you think the book helps? Or do you or anyone has any advice please? The issue is that this is not a popular problem and I could hardly find any materials that helps. Even out family doctor doesn't seem to take it serious enough. Also thank you WSJ for the video.

I have sensory issues and my family and I know I have autism. We still haven’t got it confirmed but we know. Because of how I’ve acted in my childhood. Like getting awards ( for autism) and like certain clothing ( my sensory issues) With me getting awards I’d sometimes cry or freeze. And my teacher called my mum in year 3 saying “your son burst into tears after getting an award and my classmates were trying to calm me down but I cried louder. And then with clothing I can’t wear things with do up buttons or zips. Zips not as bad. Then jeans. The inside of the jeans with all the buttons and stuff. I definitely have autism Edit: I forgot this comment existed. I got diagnosed a few months after this. Now just recently (2022 november) Im getting lots of help and I've even school has been letting me bend the uniform rules as to not get sensory overload. I never knew people cared about me so much and I'm seriously happy I'm getting all this early in life!

Wow, I just found out about this. My brother mentioned it a few years ago but finally decided/remembered to look it up. I have ADD (was diagnosed before ADHD was heard of). I just thought I couldn't filter out noises. I also remember running out of my father's shop any time he ran a tool (especially a skill saw). It blocks all of sounds so it would freak me out, and it was loud! This also explains why I get headaches when the windows are rolled down (the wind is very loud). I hear the smallest noises (watching TV in a brick house but hear the mailman jeep as he slows and stops (from a few doors down and past - maybe 300 yards, 600 total) while the house is 400ft from the road....yet it is SO hard for me to understand what someone is saying OR to have a conversation or talk on the phone when there is noise behind me (must be silent). Of course my TV is at level 10 or 12 volume, anything higher and it's unnecessarily loud, so it's not like it's blocking all other sound out.

Contrix ~ Lights can also affect us as well as sounds. While some love loud noise, they make me cringe instantly. and I don't just mean the loudness, most of it is tone. For example: super power is I can hear a dog whistle, down side, a train whistle makes me shudder all over like I feel like glass and I am self destructing. Not afraid of heights or speed, but not a fan of water, grass or sand. gooey stuff is weird and I wash my hands a lot when baking. Love my super stim of feeling/rubbing fluffy cat or dog or rabbit, but allergic to them all. So my focus was turned to clothing... nothing itchy or too tight or too loose...has to fit just right. hate tags and labels of any kind, has to be all cotton. I wear tight tanks under everything and love to layer up. These are more things that help distinguish Aspies with SPD. Aspergers, high functioning has recently been my Diagnosis alongside SPD.

He is not alone. A lot of us are struggling with it, but most people will dismiss you as being lazy or a bad parent. The librarian at my elementary school told my mom she needed to get her “priorities straight”. But my mom is amazing so they are wrong. I didn’t get a diagnosis until I was 17. I also have Sensory Processing Disorder too, however my situation/story is a bit different from yours.. I have a huge problem with smells and I tend to overreact when the smell is really “bad” or “gross”. I also have a problem with small and loud noises and I get very angry, annoyed and upset over the noises. I even have a problem with eating and I’m a very picky eater, I only eat a certain amount of foods and I get really panicky and anxious when I’m forced to try something new. And lastly I hate the feeling of being touched and I get annoyed when someone gives me hug, a pat on the shoulder, etc. Either way I understand how tough and difficult it is to live with Sensory Processing Disorder. Even I get annoyed about how sensitive I am

My daughter is 21 . We have tried all of her life to deal with behavior issues we thought was social phobia, depression or ptsd from bullying. CPS ordered counselling didn't work and the CPS involvement added to the stress by stigmatizing her.Just few months ago a couple of her gaming friends who are autistic identified a lot of their issues in her and helped her talk to me about internal issues she had always masked before. She tried therapy again and the assessment made perfect sense, She's on the spectrum and she has SPD-especially hypersensitive to sound. She has had constant migraines because her brain processes all noise at super high volume. She couldn't turn it off and she didn't know how to tell us until recently, Who wouldn't have issues with frustration?. All of that to say I think work needs to be done on awareness by guidance staff, teachers. parents and doctors,. In hindsight regarding my girl there were many, many 'tells' that were happening all along but we failed her so many times by not seeing them.

I think my brother may have this (I am not a doctor! So I am probably wrong but here’s my conclusion!) He is very sensitive, He is super picky. There’s only a few foods he’ll eat, and most foods he’ll immediately spit it out. Because of the texture or taste. He usually doesn’t eat much because of this. Next, he has such a huge problem with clothing, it’s hard to shop for him because he won’t wear anything unless it feels perfect. Tight ? Wont wear. Scratchy? Wont wear. Itchy? Wont wear. Too big? Wont wear. Oh and he often has meltdowns when forced to eat food. Next. Light hurts his eyes he says. He sometimes complains about light being to bright. One time we were in my cousins room playing a game and she has light pink everything and bright lights. It didn’t bother anyone but him, he said it’s hurting his eyes rlly bad and we HAVE TO PLAY SOMEHWERE ELSE. So does it seem like he has it? One more thing, I have troubles with certain things like he does too but not as bad, I always have a incredibly hard time with getting clothing because like him it has to be perfect. Some days tight clothing is fine others it’ll make me have a meltdown. Especially if my hair is even slightly greasy and it’s touching my neck with a tight shirt I’ll immediately change or it’ll trigger me rlly badly. One day at school I had greasy hair and it was down and I was hot from gym and my shirt was tight and the lights were blaring into my eyes. I felt like crying but I held it in. And paper, paper is horrid. Anytime I touch it, it sends goosebumps All up me and I shiver. It makes me cringe sooo bad. It’s hard to do work at school and so I often have to stop and just process it. And uhm.. yeah. Me and my brother prolly don’t have it because I’m not a doctor but that’s my suspicion and if u think we do tell me.

Like for example those 3d cups, the texture even if my finger just strokes it i almost puke. Then i can also feel like a small speck lf dust fall on my arm and it almost feels like someone is pinching me. I have trouble with clothing like i just hate the feel of anything touching my skin. I can never sleep at night because there is always something that is touching my skin. Smell there isnt really anything Taste, certain tastes and textures of food make me vomit. Like the way tat from me is textured or the liquidness of mac and cheese. Ive stopped eating alot of foods mainly bc of the texture And some other things, im sensitive to sound like really loud noises or loud places bother me. Im sensitive to flashing lights they give me massive headaches. Tell me what you think.

i don’t have austism or adhd or anything but i have an issue where i have to move my toungue in a certain way until it feels just right, and i think i also have ocd according to my mom who said i have every symptom. i do occasionally have eye twitches or “ticks” as my therapist calls them, and i struggle with texture. i cant bite into a popsicle without cringing at the feeling of my teeth gliding in a weird squishy way. i cant rub a towel against the wall just because two very try things combine and cause friction and usually make a loud noise or something and i immediately have to throw the towel somewhere to stop thinking of it. i cant eat salsa because of the small chunks in it, and eating anything such as tomatoes or onions or something that crunch or smoosh make me very uncomfortable and i sometimes lay awake at night thinking of those things.

Well, you shouldn't be obsessing over them, and if you feel that avoiding those things are messing with your ability to socialize, I'd suggest working on it with ABA. If it's not harming your ability to relate to others, you shouldn't worry about it. If it is, get help. It's not going to go away, it's just to help you manage better.

@@miffedcuttlefish6139 positive from parents. Notice how you didn't say from the children themselves. I've never heard anyone, let alone and autistic person, say ABA has helped them learn to live with, cope with, or understand their condition. It has only helped them hide it. If you got punished every time you said "ow," you'd try to stop saying it, even when you're hurting. It's a similar thing for people who are punished for stimming, not living up to "societal standards," etc.

@@trinityfrank2526 also, perhaps these individual have sensory processing disorder and since the jury is still out on that, therapists have a hard time finding the right sensory diets for these kids. Sensory Integration therapy is good for that. Maybe the parents are just as uninformed as the thetapist when it comes to the child?

Can someone help me , okay my son at age 3 was seen by a specialist our dr thought he could have autism well we took him and he passed all testings , well on the notes they wrote possibly borderline of sensory disorder? Now mind you I never ever SEEN THAT PART , of the notes through out all these years my son who is 10 now , has a lot of trouble with a lot of things I do have a long list of examples, for one he is triggered by someone chewing the person doesn’t have to be even close to him , another thing is how we pronounce our words of it ends with a P, C, K it fires him up it ruins his day , and another one his clothings he can’t stand anything to loose or with a shirt that has any graphic that are felt like rubber or sticky or heavy wool , and as he was growing loud noises I would have to close his ears to flush the toilet when he was younger and the other main thing is he doesn’tseem to have emotion when someone is showing emotion for example if he is having a tantrum or he is simply not ok with whatever triggered him ealier it gets so bad to where I cry because it I don’t know what helps to calm him down and when I do show some crying he actually says stop or yells for me to stop crying or just seems disconnected with his feelings for someone, but he is great in school he doesn’t have a problem being social with friends but when it’s a family gathering he tends to stay away unless his cousins are there then he will interact with them , he dose hug me says I love you I just need help I need to get him seen again

Oh my gosh I can relate. Since kindergarten (age 4) I have had this sensory processing disorder, and still am. I have the same thing but in clothing. (touch) I cannot bare or stand with clothing wear. There is not any varieties of clothing I can wear & it makes me feel insecure and left out. I also can relate with your son's chewing hearing problem. I also get triggered hearing people chew, especially my family because I live with them, unlike family friends because you don't want to be rude & you only see them once in a while. (*Anyways, there are some possible solutions which may help, here is the following.*) - Occupational therapist - Wilbarger Brushing Protocol - sensory bins - sensory diets - Medication An occupational therapist is most recommended by others. They are health care professions, & are mainly used for sensory disorders, & related disorders or problems of that. A Wilbarger Brushing Protocol is also good use for home. You take the brush and rub it around your body for a couple minutes every day. This should reduce more of your uncomforted, your nervous system, & the nerves. (feeling sensitivity) Sensory bins are easy, and great to make at home! :) It can also be similar to the Wilbarger Brushing Protocol. You can make wet, dry, & different types of sensory bins with themes! (That will also help the nervous system.) Sensory diets are similar to sensory bins. It is not related to food lol, but it's a matter of play with fidgets, weighted blankets, pillows, etc. That should as well help with the nervous system. Medication is also a option, but there isn't a quite "correct" one. It could help, but it is not recommended by doctors. Also 1 thing in mind, if your child doesn't want to for example wear or do something due to sensory processing disorder, don't force them! It'll cause them stress, and in the future may not think you understand on how it feels!! (Also, about your son's 'chewing' trigger, it may just be due to attitude, or brain trigger, every person can have it. Reply if you have a question though) Reply back to my comment if it helped, problems, or questions. Let's chat! :-)

Misophonia, is an actual thing. This is what I believe your son is experiencing when getting angry about hearing someone chew. I think it would be wise to have your son re-evaluated by a psychologist. It sounds like he has sensory processing disorder issues as well as Auditory Processing Disorders. I would even discuss Hyperacusis with your pediatrician. That is a condition where a person is a disorder in loudness perception. I've read there are certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies that go along with having ADHD or Autism. These deficiencies can affect a child's mood and behavior. My daughter was recently diagnosed with vitamin d deficiency with low iron. The vitamin d deficiency aggrevates her moods, anxiety and depression. I think she also has low dopamine levels. Decreased dopamine levels have been known to form the basis of the symptoms associated with major depressive disorder. MDD is one of the things my daughter was diagnosed with. She's going to see an ENT later this month to help with the Hyperacusis. The best advice I can give you is to start keeping a binder for your son. Include as test results, school records (when he's old enough) and educate yourself. You are your child's biggest advocate. We can do hard things. I know it's not easy. Vitamin D levels are not normally tested for-you specifically have to request it. The testing should be covered by insurance (usually around $50 if you're not covered.) Good Luck!

When they were talking about electronics insane that it's a two-dimensional world that's not true whatsoever to be honest with you. It matters what you put on the TV or what you put in front of that child for an example my daughter is 2 years old and there's sometimes where my daughter will use a couple of words she will not say anything for a couple of weeks and then after a couple of weeks she'll say those words again she also has sensory processing disorder now with that being said I'm a single mother / father to my daughter and I put on PBS kids for my daughter and that's how she began to start talking a little bit more than normal and with that being said my daughter is improving each and every single day with the help of PBS kids. My daughter likes to play outside but I don't let her only because she puts everything in her mouth outside and I don't trust that because there are too many disgusting things that a child can get and they can be able to pass it on to other children run along with passing it on to you as well as you being the parent for parents what even guardian. Some people say oh that's kids for you they will put anything in their mouths but honestly speaking not every child does that. When my daughter was playing around she was not learning anything she wasn't even talking so not everybody's point of view of electronics is correct because it all matters on what you put in front of your children if you are going to put something that is non-educational they are not going to learn anything but if you put PBS kids like I do in front of your child they are going to learn something because PBS kids is educational for children. I've been putting on PBS kids for my daughter since she was a baby and now she is 2 years old. Ever since I put on PBS kids for her she has been trying to talk more. When I take my daughter outside to play my daughter does nothing but want to go on the swing and fall asleep on the swing. She does not socialize with other kids because other kids drag my daughter. Other kids are also very disrespectful and they push her and they don't want to play with her at all so I don't bring her outside to socialize with other kids because other kids are rude and disrespectful add to prevent me from going to jail I would protect my daughter and have her stay at home where I know that she is safe and I know that nobody is going to pick on her or drag her like if she is a doll because she is not a doll she is a human being. My daughter has seen only one occupational therapist and the occupational therapist said that my daughter has sensory processing disorder and as my daughter gets older the sensory processing disorder only gets worse.

Mmmm i didn’t know it wasn’t technically a real disorder lol 😂 cause the doctor just diagnosed me because I got sensory overload in the doctors office. And then she diagnosed it right there. So I thought it was an official one lol Bc the doctor usually guesses diagnosis’s wrong. (Like I was walking on my toes for the majority of my life and then they made me get an MRI scan Bc it could’ve been tethered spine... 😂 it was kind of unnecessary.)

Usually you have to have it diagnosed with another kind of neurological disorder that is recognized by the dsm-V. Like autism. It CAN exist on its own, but it is highly unlikely to be singular.
