For many suffering from chronic pain it is challenging to re-trust your body, but with Pain Reprocessing Therapy it is possible to explore that sensation and welcome it. In this episode, Dr. Erin Elmore speaks with Dr. Jaimee Arnoff. Jaimee is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in CBT and Pain Reprocessing Therapy. She brings 10 years of both clinical and lived experience to her work, treating children, adolescents, and young adult clients who experience anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. In her own journey of chronic pain, Jaimee was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia and Fibromyalgia, in addition to multiple other conditions that cause inflammation and related nerve pain. Together Erin and Jaimee discuss using Pain Reprocessing Therapy to create new neural pathways that promote safety within the body, the common challenges experienced by those living with chronic pain, steps to reprocessing pain, and the success of PRT with clients as a complement during their pain journey.

There is not a single therapist dealing in PRT who will give you the exact tools to handle a bad flare-up even when you have thoroughly convinced yourself you are healed and this is, metaphorically speaking, a false fire alarm. All they have to offer is -- 'accept without focusing on the inevitable emotional aspect of the pain, don't fight it, tell yourself everything is fine and ride the wave'. This is at best a coping strategy, not a remedial one. The science can tell you loads about the underlying mechanism but comes up short when you need tangible results.

I don't think there are exact tools. It's based on the individual

Unfortunately the only way out of chronic pain is through acceptance that your pain is being caused by central sensitisation also known by various other names such as TMS. Getting to this acceptance is of course incredibly difficult, if not impossible for most people. I am living proof of a person who has overcome debilitating pain and other symptoms for as long as I can remember and I have also been hospitalised twice because of the mental toll it took on me. However, you are probably wondering why I am now here commenting on a video when I am cured? Well, the answer is that I am back in chronic pain but in a different part of my body and I am going through the same process that everybody else goes through where you search for an answer and nobody seems to be able to tell you what's wrong in your body. Currently I have chronic shoulder and arm pain and despite very expensive and extensive medical tests I have yet to receive a solid diagnosis. I am at the point where I have to again bring myself to the acceptance that what I am experiencing is a manifestation of stress and associated emotions. The scientific literature around mind body pain is so strong now that nobody can dispute that there is a direct link between the mind and the body when it comes to chronic symptoms. Ultimately a body that is experiencing stress, or call it anxiety, is in an altered state and when the body is in such an altered state pain or other symptoms is an obvious consequence. I don't think there are exact tools to bring about pain relief. I can only speak from my own experience but all the symptoms I have personally overcome only went away when I had no option but to realise that behind the pain was fear. I have had more therapy Than most people that I know are none of it brought about relief. An example of My pain was chronic and debilitating headaches 24 hours a day for well over 20 years. As you can imagine my life was living hell because I had to essentially adjust everything I did to accommodate my suffering. I am absolutely telling the truth that one day I sat in the car crying my eyes out because I wanted to have a nice day at the beach with my wife and yet I was in excruciating pain. I went home sat on the bed and literally told myself that enough was enough and I kind of had a moment of clarity. It just hit me like a ton of bricks that I was perpetually feeding this pain because I was frightened to death of it. I decided that I was going to no longer let the pain dictate my life and I started to do everything and everything that I considered a normal person would do. Within about two months these headaches completely and utterly disappeared and have never returned. Unfortunately, pain moved to various other parts of my body and I had to go through a similar process where I was worried to death about what was going on before I came to the same realisation. At one point in this journey I had a brain scan because I thought something serious must be wrong. The results of this scan were that my brain and the rest of my body was absolutely fine and the consultant who gave me my results actually adamantly stated that my issue was rooted in stress and anxiety. I simply did not believe him and I continue to suffer for quite some time before that day came along when I had simply change my mind about what was going on.

Google pain reprocessing therapy and you'll find the official website that offers a list of certified providers. You'll also see training programs on the website.

Not knowing I had Hypermobity Ehler's Danlos until two years ago has been quite a blow. Turns out the whiplash could not heal as all over my body my ligaments are like string vs rope as intended. It was explained to me that my head is on a faulty foundation. It is a collagen and tissue disease with no cure. Bracing, topicals, heat, cold therapies are all I have. Certain areas are worse due to injuries earlier in life as well. Appears aging with it is quite challenging. Trying to be positive but affected from the soles of my feet to the top of my head. It can affect any system of the body. I have challenges there, too.

Your idea is reframe it in your mind to ignore it. Doesnt make it better or go away. Its living and creating higher pain tolerance and ifnoring it as its fine and normal and pain is ok. This is not healthy!
