Thank you so much for this! My Hoya has them bad and I watched a bunch of other videos on mealies in general, but it’s like - this is literally the worst plant to have mealies on bc of all the tiny nooks and crannies. I needed someone who dealt with this specific plant, so I appreciate you! This is one of my favorite plants so I have to save it. 🤞🏻

Great information. Question...why didn't you just get new soil for the plant as opposed to soaking the old soil?

I’m a fellow Minneapolis resident and plant person as well. I’m so jealous-not of the mealybugs but the hoya! It is beautiful. I really hope it does well. Ps I love the turquoise bathroom. I had one growing up-bless the 80’s. Good luck on the move!

Great tips! I'm fighting mealies in a couple plant and just got some neem so I'll be doing this! For hanging plants, get those command hooks and use the backings that are like Velcro. I think they're for hanging pictures but they hold way more weight compared to just the sticky ones!

I had mealybugs last week on some plants and freaked out about my compacta. This video makes me feel ready to take those bugs on if they decide to hurt my Hoya babies! Thank you!

So you don't worry about rinsing the Neem oil off? I keep hearing to do that.. I'm so nervous to lose my meaningful hoya 😢 I spot cleaned like crazy with isopropyl alcohol and QTips, sprayed it with Neem spray and an insecticidal spray, but now the leaves are now turning yellow and quite a few are shriveling.. please help! I feel so lost and worried. Your video is very helpful, thanks so much for sharing, I'm so glad i found you.❤ Hope you're doing well. (I grew up in Iowa and miss the Midwest dearly!!) Warm regards from Rhode Island

Nice to see you again! Hope you do a follow-up on this. Hope your move goes smoothly and you can do a walk-through when you get settled. I've been looking for one of those plants, hopefully they become more popular. Will look for some solutions to your hanging up plants without drilling. I know some folks have theirs hanging on bars that stand on the floor- I have no idea what they are called, though! (I know a lot of help I am!) :)

The solution for the hanging plants is a free-standing clothes rack. It comes in all sizes and lengths.

Try hanging plants on rolling clothes rack. Great for large windows, you can roll all the plants around the house to get sunlight

I would just drill the holes. When you move, cover them and sand them down. They won't even notice. I do it all the time and never had an issue. The rental is going to need to be painted anyways so they won't notice, especially if you have light colored walls. Darker colors might be a bit more noticable so I would ask them for a bit of paint for some spot painting (or at the very least ask what color and brand paint they use). I have been renting for 20 years and never got a ding off a deposit because of holes. Any type of stick on product will not hold well enough when the pot is wet unless they are small plants. I wouldn't recommend that. I have tried, and lost a few plants because they fell. You don't want that.

Really great instruction for dealing with mealy bugs. Would it have been just as effective to treat the root ball if you stuck it in the terra cotta pot first before soaking it? Also, look for clothing racks to hang plants. Many hang a bottom shelf and wheels to move around. Amazon has many options.
@UrbanJungleMSP4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've Killed That Thanks for the tips! About the terra cotta, do you mean soaking it while it’s in the terra cotta?

I had some spider mites or mealy bugs on my purple hearts. I grab those suckers, took them over to the sink, poured Dawn dishwashing liquid on them and gently wiped the leaves. They were gone in seconds and have not been back. Why didn't you just throw out the soil and repot after soaking to make sure there are no eggs or anything?

Very informative video. I don't currently have a problem with mealies but I do have this hindu rope Hoya. About your hanging plant problem at your new place in Minnesota. Have you considered a GARMENT rack? Good luck to you.

Hi, thanks so much but REALLY need the proportions of ingredients eg. isopropyl/recipe? Can you please help as don’t want to do all this if I use too much or not enough.

I wish I had thought to propagate cuttings before my hoyas demise😫 I definitely could have salvaged a ton before it was completely decimated. The mealybugs just came out of nowhere, I'm so upset.

I have a hoya that has had terrible mealy bug infestation. I tried everything, including all the liquids you have as well as a systemic that goes down in the dirt. Still had mealy bug. So I removed all the soil and what was left of it and put it in leca thinking that would do it. Well guess what? Still has mealy bug and I can see the mealy bugs down in the leca. eww. Next thing I'm going to try flushing the roots / leca with diluted hydrogen peroxide. I seriously have almost given up on it. However, my hoya is not a mauna loa. So I would definitely continue to try if I had one of those.

Also drill anyways and just plaster and paint yourself ita insanely easy
@lovewontsaveu4 жыл бұрын
This was so helpful thank you! But this process seems quite traumatic for the plant. Would you advise doing this if the plant is already stressed from an advanced mealybug infestation?
@UrbanJungleMSP4 жыл бұрын
Danielle Fay Good point! Personally I think getting rid of the pest is more important, that’s from my experience. It’s definitely a shock to the plant, but I’ve found Hoyas to be very resilient!
@toribreathsfire2 жыл бұрын
How did this turn out? In my experience even at low dosages most plants dont take well to being soaked in neem its like the leafs abosbed the neem and exploded

Can you do this to pony tail palms or aloes as well? I live in Florida and mealy bugs are invading my outdoor plants! 😫😫😫 Thank you so much for the tips. My rope plant looks amazing after her little bath…I’m going to give her one more and hope I killed all the mealy bugs.

hi. thanks for the elaborate explanation. can we use Ethyl Alcohol instead of isopropyl? because Isopropyl Alc is not freely available here. Ethyl Alcohol is present in hand rub solutions and is a good disinfectant too. Please guide.
@carriegrula64032 жыл бұрын
Can you rinse the leaves off after soaking or is it bad to wash off the soap/neem? A lot of the loose dirt has worked itself onto the leaves during the soaking process and I'm not sure how to get it all off.
