Koadlow Public Lecture 2015. Over the past two decades there has been a revolution in our knowledge of how pain is made by the brain, but very little of this information has reached pain sufferers. Much of the complex pain science can be reduced to a simple formula, “we will have pain when our brain has more credible evidence of danger to our body than credible evidence of safety to our body.”

While watching this a bee crawled onto my face. I felt it , brushed it off and it stung me. I didn't know what it was and panicked at the thort of a white tailed spider. I shook out my tee shirt and there he was, a bee, Phew. The pain was strong until I realized it was only a bee sting. 5 mins later no pain. This really happened, unbelievable!

I cured a supposed debilitating, incurable auto immune disease years ago using my mind. Have only recently going through horrendous, rotator cuff pain. I will overcome this pain by using my mind again, but thanks to you Doc, I have the science to qualify my self learned knowledge.

The great pain deception- by Steve Ozanich really helped me. I’m almost free of 5 years debilitating chronic pain and that book helped a lot.

Does this work for even imune system nerve pain eg burning crawling prickling stabbing , spasym twiching tremmors . I have all these sensations called central sensitization with imune problems all started after an accident. No doctor can figure it out .

I had a back injury, then a surgery go terribly wrong, and it can't be undone.. I literally have screws scratching the spinal cord. Chinese torture used to include letting a bamboo plant grow right through a person, like a paper cut that never ends. Acute pain, according to books, ends at 90 days, but each movement(not every movement, but enough of them) are basically causing a "new" injury for 17 years now. I am not the only one like this.. Can you send me an email?

James check out Scott Kiloby. He recently healed himself from years of excruciating spinal nerve pain. I don't remember the details but remember him saying how serious it was, much more than just a slipped disc; really medically he should be in agony. He is now pain free and doing private sessions online with people. He is living proof this is possible. Please take encouragement from this.

@@johnathanabrams8434 pain is psychological, and nocioception is the physiological mechanism. both are biological, and knowing the difference is key

@@ThePropaganda4 Pain is an output of the brain and nociception is an input of the nociceptors. Pain is both a physiology and psychological. It is definitely more of a physical event than a psychological. If a throw a tennis ball at your back versus a bowling ball im 99% sure the bowling ball will cause more pain. If i throw a tooth pick at you versus a dagger. The physical noxious stimuli has more painful effects than the psychology of it. If there is even a psychological component

Its some kind of protective survival tool to tell you something is wrong in your system. Persistent pain is even a survival tool to tell you something is really F'd up and you need to fix it

Can someone give me a brief take away from this lecture. When you in chronic pain ..listening to a lot of intellectual jargon done quickly its difficult for me to understand. In brief...what will help with my pain?

If anyone on here has been dealing with ongoing pain and hasn’t looked at the work of Dr John Sarno…check him out. His book “Healing Back Pain” saved my life. No surgery when I was told there was no other choice.

Nice insight but chronic pain needs to be treated physically as well as psychologically. Proper breathing allows the body to function well so in teaching the body to do new motions previously painful and avoided requires repetition and correct breathing so the brain doesn't choose breathing over proper muscle function. The diaphragm needs to be taught how to be used properly. This has great insights but it's not complete.

@@AvadhutNigudkar I do it 3-4 rounds every day. In each round I take 30 ujwai breaths. But I have learnt it from a teacher, not sure if you can learn it from internet. Also when I do sudarshan kriya, the prerequisite is three stage pranayama which is again based on ujwai. It has really helped me a lot. Can't express my gratitude to the technique.

@@AvadhutNigudkar also for deep abdominal breathing, I like it while lying down. I place a book on my tummy and it's up and down movements help me Stay focused on deep abdominal breaths. Also it provides very minor resistance so it's an added advantage I guess.
