I dislocated this joint 2 years ago in a foolish attempt to play superman with a heavy appliance and it has caused me a great deal of pain since then. I have complained of this to my doctors and past physical therapists, and been offered limited treatment around the area with suggestions of surgery to repair it. I normally resist the notion of surgical procedures and opt for therapy whenever possible, especially since this is damaged soft tissue and not a bone fracture, and my pain from it is manageable without meds. However, I lead a very active lifestyle and place a great deal of pressure on this joint frequently, so it is rather uncomfortable to just power through the pain. I'm excited to see that there is a PT technique that can be applied to the area that may help my body naturally repair the damage I've done. I'll be sharing this with my Chiropractor and PT. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Robert!

Hi, Thanks so much for your comment. As an athlete I totally understand about needing to remain active and managing pain while doing so. It's mentally and emotionally difficult when physically pain and discomfort are barriers to doing what you love. Sometime manual therapy helps maintain activity, and sometimes injuries are severe enough that surgery is required to afford you the active lifestyle. I personally feel that surgery should be the final option, but sometimes it's the only option to quickly restore function. Pain relief is another animal that may not be helped with surgery, that's a larger conversation. Thanks for offering to refer your rehab team. You can refer them to this page where they can sign up for the online course. It comes with lifetime access and is meant to be utilized during treatment. Hi, Thanks so much for your comment. This is an old Osteopathic treatment technique. Depending on where you are located, I would search out an Osteopath (DO, DOMP) for treatment possibly utilizing this technique. If you have a massage Therapist or Physiotherapist who you already receive treatment from and you would like them to utilize this technique, I do offer online education for manual therapists (Massage Therapists, Physios, Chiro, etc...). You can refer them to this page where they can sign up for the online course. It comes with lifetime access and is meant to be utilized during treatment. Is it different from anterior sternoclavicular joint dislocation?
@robertlibbeyrmt
@robertlibbeyrmt Жыл бұрын
Hi, With any dislocation, all surrounding joint tissues will be affected to some degree. This technique could make up part of a manual treatment plan for such a patient.

Hi doctor, actually i have no pain but i feel like the sternoclavical joint is moving forward a little bit with some movements especially when i move my arm to the back is this considered as a normal case or there is something wrong with it ?
@robertlibbeyrmt
@robertlibbeyrmt 10 ай бұрын
Hi, Thanks for the comment. When we move our arms backwards, the head of the clavicle sitting in the SC Joint will glide anteriorly. This is a normal forced coupling motion for this joint. As long as it's stable, and doesn't cause discomfort or dysfunction this is most likely a normal range for you. Both sides will move slightly differently from each other as they are asymmetric in shape, structure and function. If you have any concerns, see an assessment from your trusted medical orthopaedic health care clinician/therapist. Robert Libbey, RMT

How many times should you look to repeat this process each session ( How many breaths ? )
@robertlibbeyrmt

Hi, thanks so much for the comment, sorry for getting to you late. I typically only perform this technique once in a treatment. The amount of repetitions is patient dependent. Remember the assessment is treatment and there are many times where the functionality of the joint returns during the assessment.

I was playing tackle football with a friend of mine and the next day I noticed my left clavicle was sticking out by my neck more than my right and there was a rough patch of muscle that felt like a big bruise in front of it. I told my parents but they shrugged it off and said it was only a bruise so I thought this too. It’s been two days now and I’m starting to have physical pain and the “bruise” has not gone down at all. Is this a sign of an anterior dislocation? If so what should I do to fix it?

Hi, thanks for the comment. I would seek medical help for an orthopaedic assessment and possible imaging of the area. Regardless of what it is, having it investigated and having peace of mind is primary. Otherwise, you may alter how you compete as a player/athlete.

Hi, thanks so much for the comment, sorry for getting to you late. It's unfortunate that you are needing to rehab the joint now. I would recommend seeking rehabilitation services from clinicians who can treat with Prolotherapy and seeing active rehab from a PT and or Osteopath.

I got into an accident recently and my right SC joint has been sticking out since then is it that I have anterior dislocation. If yes then are there other part of the body that gets affected too cause I feel like my whole right side from the head to feet is affected since my sc joint has been sticking out.

Depending on the accident and the areas involved, it is possible that the SC jnt has changed its position and function. As this joint is innervated, any other tissues innervated by the same nerve can be affected causing discomfort and dysfunction. It's best to have a trusted clinician, therapist perform an orthopeadic assessment of all the areas affected. Good Luck.

Hi, thanks so much for the comment, sorry for getting to you late. Remember that pain and structure are not linked. Some of the worst looking medical images are of people with no pain, the reverse is also true. The SC jnt tissues are innervated by C3-6, while the GH jnt tissues are innervated by C5-7. There is some overlapping of innervation so possibly if nociception is happening a the GH tissues, there may be a sensitization occurring at the overlapping DRGs potentially causing sensation alterations at the SC tissues. The current recommendations are to continue movement and doing activities you enjoy within discomfort free ranges, then increasing those ranges gradually.

Hi, thanks so much for the comment, sorry for getting to you late. Unfortunately I have no context to go by for a reply, as it depends on what you are attempting to achieve. If pain/discomfort reduction is the goal, then this is not the way as pain is multifactorial and requires an in-depth approach beyond what a manual therapy technique will provide. If it is for modifying AROM, one thing the clinicians sometimes fail to remember is that structure also plays a role in functionality of a joint or issue. Many times structure has developed in a way that prevents full averaged AROM. Attempting to increase the range will be frustrating. Maintaining the available functional AROM is recommended.

@@robertlibbeyrmt only thing that has actually improved it is weight exercises/strength training. Its stopped the pain, strengthened the joint and is much more unnoticeable thanks to building muscle to cover my proud collarbone (the part connected to the sternum).

@@howiseeit5326 Yes, this is the benefit of active rehab. Increasing tolerance for stimulus with weight training in many people decreases their perception of discomfort. In some cases where pain/discomfort is not diminished, the discomfort of exercise increases the tolerance for personal discomfort, thereby helping the person accept and tolerate their resting discomfort better. I'm very pleased you found something to benefit your Quality of life.
